North Carolina Receives B1G offer, Virginia & Georgia Tech next in line

Big ten football has been a joke lately. Adding GT and UNC doesn't change it that much.

And no way UNC accepts.

The only excitement coming from the B1G in the coming years will be the annual stomping of UM via Urban Liar.

PS, how about a policy that opposing fans, although welcome, cannot have pro-other team avatars or massive signature pictures promoting their school? I'd rather stare at the sun for an hour than see the OP's avatar/signature.

UNC will not accept.

Yeah, right now when the BIG is solid for b-ball it looks great. The conference would be stupid good. But after season/football season, there will be a bunch of mediocre teams playing each other.

Except UNC's not leaving a strengthened ACC to join the shitshow known as the BIG10....

I will sit back and laugh when cable network TV is no longer bundled and all that revenue B1G flaunts around whithers away. All of this TV footprint hoopla will be for not.

Yep, it was definitely a blowout this year right? That allmighty undefeated team that only scored 2 touchdowns and had to kick 4 field goals to win right? At home?

That loss was solely on the coaching staff of Michigan. Led 21-20 at half and decided to eat the offensive playbook in the second half and tried to run the ball thinking they were alabama, with a 5'6 RB.

Carolina isn't leaving Duke and vice versa

Also in basketball future ACC > Future B1G

The loss was because you had a flawed system built around a player that was consistently shut down his senior year.

I expect UM to get much better in the coming years as they slowly drift away from the system that was built around D-Rob. It put the program back about 5 years.

The Sugar Bowl year was a fluke, IMO. Mike Valenti sponsors this message.

As for UNC, I don't understand it, but whatever.

Some of the thought is Duke would come if the ACC continues to get raped by the B1G.

I don't see that conference lasting long if this move does happen.

UNC, UVA & Duke would fit great academically.

Huh? You got Maryland, so far that is it. Let me repeat Maryland. Seriously absolutely nobody in the ACC is upset about Maryland leaving other then probably Maryland.

I don't think UNC will accept...but I never thought Syracuse would leave the Big East either. Who's #26 for UM? He looks like he's looking for a good slobber-knocking. The B1G is going to be owned by OSU for years to come...especially because Hoke (AKA Chris Christy) will be on the sidelines vapor-locking in the second half of every meaningful game.

They're not leaving because the only teams that want to go to the B1G are the leftovers from other conferences. Maryland and Rutgers add shi!t. You underestimate the ACC and everyone's opinion of the B1G. The B1G is isolated in the Midwest aside from Rutgers and Maryland (who, again, add nothing athletically to the conference). Delany knows he has to expand outward or run the risk of staying land locked forever. He's being the aggressor so it APPEARS like the B1G is a player in the college athletic landscape. Classic short man syndrome.

Did you hear Coach K after UMD beat them? He sounded like he needed his diaper changed from all that crying.

“And when you give that up, what price is that?” he asked. “What does that do? The fact that they’ll never be a Duke-Maryland game again. There may never be a Texas-Texas A&M game again, a Syracuse-Georgetown game again. Those schools aren’t gonna schedule one another. I mean, that’s not gonna happen. And in Maryland’s case, that’s the only conference they’ve known. And they’re right in the middle of the ACC. And now their fans, they don’t have a place. They’re outsiders. They really are outsiders. What price? What price is paid for that?”

Coach K says Maryland will be ‘outsiders’ in the Big Ten

I would give Coach K a little more respect.

He's upset that all these great conference rivalries are gone because the overall school wants money....simply more money.

In Maryland's case the President said they can keep a majority of their Olympic sports now with the money that the BIG will give them so if that's the case I can't fault them for that.

All I'm saying is be better keep his words soft and sweet because he may have to eat them. Duke may very will be forced to go to the B1G if UNC & UVA leave and the ACC blows up.

UNC goes, the dominoes fall.

Rack em, I'm sorry, but I think the Big 10's current football woes have you overlooking what a juggernaut the conference really is when the whole picture is considered...

Academically, the Big 10 is the place to be as far as science/math/engineering, which are currently the focus of just about everyone.

The TV money is absurd: Top-earning Big 10 teams earn the equivalent of what the Big East is being offered by NBC for all their media rights EVERY YEAR. and this is with the oldest TV contract in the major conferences...

Finally, research. Everyone wants it. It's where the really big money flows (billions and billions a year. dwarfs college football in its entirety). Not only does the Big 10 have their little research-sharing organization, lets take a look at the top universities in total research funding in 2012:

1. Johns Hopkins (1.73 billion DoD grant. not even fair)
2. Michigan (the epicenter of everything cancer)
3. Wisconsin (the epicenter of everything stem cells)

4. Washington
5. Duke
6. UC-San Diego
7. UCLA
8. UC-San Francisco
9. Stanford
10. UPenn
...
13. Minnesota
14. Penn State
16. Ohio State

...
19. Cal
20. aTm
23. MIT
24. Yale
26. Northwestern
28. U$C
31. Harvard
32. Purdue
34. Illinois
37. Maryland
39. Iowa
41. Michigan State
42. Rutgers

...
137. ND (we're at about a 10th of what michigan and wisconsin are at. But research has never been our main goal like those 2 schools)

If you're an institution that values research, like Maryland or Rutgers, or you want to add to your academic prestige, especially in hard sciences...
Those two schools joining the Big 10 makes a lot of sense academically and TV-money wise.
If the Big Ten gets it going in football (which they will eventually. Too much money not to), they'll be incredibly attractive.

numbers are from the NSF btw.

Excellent point on research funding though. I had heard in the past that profs would kill their best TA to get into the BIG for the research possibilities alone.

I know ND rivalries with some big ten schools and its popular to rag on the Big Ten for their football performance of late. But this is wrong.

Do you understand the difference among present, past, and future tense? Or don't you need to know these simple principles at UM? I said nothing about this year or any other years past.... I said 'in the coming years' (i.e., in the future). Urban is going to win well over 50% of the games against UM, and I'd bet my alleged son on it.
