Super Bowl 2013 -- Ray Lewis of Baltimore Ravens reportedly connected to PED - ESPN

I didn't see this anywhere, mods feel free to delete if need be...But I know we have always discussed the difference in body type, strength, and speed between ND-SEC (Bama specifically)...but this made me do a double take...feel free to discuss both the Ray Lewis and Alabama parts...

he spoke to Lewis shortly after the linebacker tore his triceps on Oct. 14 and he requested products that could help speed up his recovery. Deer-antler spray was among the prescribed treatments. Deer-antler spray contains a substance (IGF-1) on the NFL's banned list.

Sports Illustrated reported in its story a pitch made by Christopher Key, the other half of the two-man company, to Alabama players in the week before they played LSU in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game.

He is quoted as explaining the benefits of the spray to the players.

"You're familiar with HGH, correct? It's converted in the liver to IGF-1," Key explained, according to the Sports Illustrated report. "IGF-1, or -insulin-like growth factor, is a natural, anabolic hormone that stimulates muscle growth. We have deer that we harvest out of New Zealand. Their antlers are the fastest-growing substance on planet Earth ... because of the high concentration of IGF-1.

"We've been able to freeze dry that out, extract it, put it in a sublingual spray that you shake for 20 seconds and then spray three [times] under your tongue. ... This stuff has been around for almost 1,000 years, this is stuff from the Chinese," Key said, the magazine reported.

I'm into bodybuilding and I can say w 100% confidence that this is not effective....this is a cover up much like the "flax seed" bonds used....I know others who tried it when this became a big thing in bodybuilding a few years ago....its snake oil...nothing more as it doesn't translate into human benefits....much like other bb supps they are shown invitro or in mice that show how anabolic something is but doesn't translate for humans

GTK...I guess what I'm wondering is...just how in the hell would the Alabama staff allow a shady character around the team in the week leading up to the game...just another shady, albeit possibly unfounded, thing associated with the program...I know it's easy to say, but if the claim/link was linked to Notre Dame, it would be broadcast all over the nation and would be considered another scandal....

It makes u wonder....I know Trent Richardson is a beast in weight room but the genetic freaks coming out of bama does make u wonder...but that is rampant throughout all teams but when a college is steering them that's concerning

Creatine's totally fine -- it's just an energy source, not a hormone. You can't overdose or anything like that, although it does make you retain water and give you a few runs to the bathroom in your first few weeks.

Doesn't creatine destroy your liver. Coupled with a certain lifestyle, my liver may just jump out my body.

You're not really supposed to use it if you have liver or kidney disease, but it's never been linked to any damage.

In theory, though, the liver has to break it down first for your body to use it (like everything else you eat).

Since its a thread with Alabama in it I repeat I want my day in court boys to air ALL my issues on the sec/phoney baloney business. It will be an open thread that may last until next season. I am ready to state my case for putting the sec under the microscope. The issues are never ending and dripping with comtemp for the corn pone/dixie flag waving/country boy can survive/non college football ala pros/I'll wrap bandages for the boys when they come home from battle/lets teach those Yankee boys a lesson sec. (There that should get my day in court). My briefcase is full and I'm ready to present my case.

Yeah.
Sadly I'm pretty sure there's no way that PEDs aren't part of EVERY major college football program.

I doubt it's a systemic thing like I believe it is there though,... Not even close

I'm not saying that 90% of guys on every team are using PEDs...I'm just pretty sure that there are a handful of guys at pretty much every major university with a big time football program.

Real men don't buy the spray, they catch a buck in the wild and lick the antlers. Seriously, I am amused that this stuff would even work.

Bama Players Use Deer Antler Spray

Bama Players Use Deer Antler Spray

Deer-antler salesman saw Alabama players use product - ESPN

Thoughts?

The company that says it provided deer-antler spray, a product that contains a banned substance, to Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis also sold its goods to members of the 2012 national championship Alabama football team, according to a co-owner of the company.

And Christopher Key, the SWATS co-owner, told ESPN's Joe Schad on Wednesday he personally witnessed about five Alabama players spray what he sold them into their mouths.

"I showed them how to use it," Key said.

Key said about 20 players purchased the spray at a hotel room in New Orleans leading into the BCS national championship game against LSU. And he said he sold about 20 more bottles to players at the apartment of an Alabama player 10 days before the game.

A defiant Ray Lewis was on display Wednesday and he won't be distracted in Sunday's Super Bowl -- he'll be determined, Jamison Hensley writes. Blog

Ray Lewis' massive popularity means that the Ravens' superstar and the NFL will get a free pass on the PED issue, Jeffri Chadiha writes. Story

Sports Illustrated first reported the connection between SWATS, an Alabama-based company, and several SEC programs.

The Sports Illustrated story reported that Key filmed a sales pitch to a number of Alabama players two days before the 2012 title game in New Orleans. The article mentioned former Crimson Tide defensive lineman Quinton Dial and current players Adrian Hubbard and Alex Watkins as being part of the sales pitch.

Watkins made a YouTube testimonial for SWATS, and Hubbard was filmed in the hotel room saying he had the deer-antler spray, SI reported. Deer-antler spray contains a substance, IGF-1, which is on the NFL's banned list.

"Nothing we offer them will make them fail a drug test," Key said, when asked about the substance being banned by the NCAA. "This will make you heal faster. This will give you nutrients. There have been many clinical studies."

Key said he has received cease-and-desist letters from Alabama, LSU and Auburn demanding not to use current players' likenesses. Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson said that school sent a cease-and-desist letter in 2011. "But you can't tell me I can't talk to your players," Key said. "We live in a free country."

Alabama, in a statement issued Tuesday night, said: "UA has been aware of this situation for some time, and we have monitored this company for several years. They have twice ignored cease-and-desist letters sent by our compliance office. We have maintained consistent education of our student-athletes regarding the substances in question and will continue to do so."

Key said players bought products at a rate he cited as confidential.

"They want to win," he said. "After the games they said they couldn't believe how they weren't tired and how much energy they had."

Key was quoted by SI as explaining the benefits of the spray to the Alabama players.

"You're familiar with HGH, correct? It's converted in the liver to IGF-1," Key explained, according to the Sports Illustrated report. "IGF-1, or insulin-like growth factor, is a natural, anabolic hormone that stimulates muscle growth. We have deer that we harvest out of New Zealand. Their antlers are the fastest-growing substance on planet Earth ... because of the high concentration of IGF-1.

"We've been able to freeze dry that out, extract it, put it in a sublingual spray that you shake for 20 seconds and then spray three [times] under your tongue. ... This stuff has been around for almost 1,000 years, this is stuff from the Chinese," Key said, according to the magazine.

However, a professor at Johns Hopkins University told the Baltimore Sun that, despite SWATS' claims, there isn't an acceptable scientific way that IGF-1 can be effectively delivered orally.

"If there were, a lot of people would be happy that they don't need to get shots anymore," Dr. Roberto Salvatori told the newspaper. "It's just simply not possible for it to come from a spray."

Key said he sold about 20 bottles of deer-antler spray to LSU players before the regular-season meeting with Alabama that year. Key said he has also provided healing hologram "chips," which are stuck to the body, to Auburn players during their national-championship season and this past season sold healing "bands" to players at Ole Miss and Georgia.

SI reported that the Alabama coaching staff was unaware of the meetings in the hotel room.

Key said he has initially reached out to many of his athlete clients through Facebook and Twitter. He would not comment on which players at which schools he sold deer-antler spray to this season. Key said at certain points, the strength staffs at Alabama and LSU said they did not endorse his dealings with players.

"I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble," Key said. "The whole idea is to compete without cheating. We're not bad guys."

Key said several players from SEC schools he claims to have sold products to reached out to him on Tuesday.

"They wanted more product," he said.

Picture this as your introduced to someone at a party. What do you do -I hear your in sales-yes I am. What do you sell? I sell deer antler spray extract from the velvet of new growth on the deer. Oh that sounds interesting what is the market. Mostly sec football teams and some pro golfers. The NFL has a ban on it so we cant go there. What does it do? Gives them and edge in performance and helps the body heal faster. Its like eating placibo. Oh that sounds interesting maybe my son/daughter could get into that line of sales. How did you get started?-well after graduating from (name the sec school) I couldnt really find a job so this came up and here I am. I was regional salesman of the year last year-it was a very big year for us in the sports market especially down here in sec country.
