The NFL has changed rules to favor passing over running, and spread principles seem to be winning out over power football. Combine that with the short shelf life of RBs and you get running backs drafted much lower now than say 10 to 20 years ago. It's just not as valued a position in the NFL as it once was.

There were 16 backs with over 1,000 yards rushing during the regular season this year. Frank Gore and Ray Rice had 1,214 and 1,143 respectively in the regular season. Gore had 104 yards per game in the post season and Ray Rice had 82.3. Obviously those two are highlighted because they are playing in the Super Bowl this season. Having a top RB is more crucial now than ever. In fact, the RB role is expanding to including a lot of pass plays arguably making the RB even MORE important.

Just my $.02

Would you care to expound?

I don't agree. I'm just trying to understand what you mean?

Hey JK, pretty much what Perth said above. Every NFL guru these days seem to say RBs are a dime a dozen. For example, I know Frank Gore of the 49ers makes less than the top LB on the team, and pretty close to the 2nd best LB on the team. Same with the Colts and Broncos. A RBs also has less time to make money.

I think the #1 reason RBs get drafted lower, and thus make less money, is because of their shelf life. I don't think they are an "afterthought" at all. RBs aren't a "dime a dozen" they just don't last as long so you don't pay them as much. Their roles are hugely important on the field as they touch the ball 15-20 times a game. Their lower draft position doesn't reflect their importance or the thought that GMs give them when they draft them, it reflects their durability and longevity.

I agree, yet Gore is paid less than the best LB on his team.

Willis is not just another LB though, don't get it mixed up. Gore makes more than the average LB.

Running backs have always had short shelf lives. Yet they're drafted lower than they used to be. The NFL in general is now about passing and stopping the pass. Also, Frank Gore's success is partially due to scheme. Zone read makes it way easier to beat the D as a running back. I'll bet you you could plug a lot of RBs into SF's system with Kaepernick (or Washington w/RGIII) and you'd see a lot of success.

Gore has averaged over 1,000 yards rushing since 2006 (853 in 2010). Kaepernick has been the QB in SF for less than a season. Alex Smith has been God Awful since he's been with the organization. Trust me, I know, I'm a Niners fan.

There are also at least 20 runningbacks that come out each year that are capable of contributing to an NFL team. There are several WR's, DLmen, LB's, OLmen, etc... but only one and situationally two rb's on the field at a time. Furthermore, there are constantly guys on waivers or unsigned that can play at a high level. That is not nearly the case with other positions. Look at Denver, McGahee (who was dumped himself) goes down, and they plug in a guy in Moreno that nobody in Denver would have cared if he got traded in week one. They wouldn't even would have cared if they cut him. He was literally the fourth string RB at one point.

With the league being more passing oriented than ever, it simply doesn't make sense to focus your team's duckets on a position that is easiest to replace. That money needs to go to guys that play positions like QB, which is much more difficult to fill.

I'm just arguing that they are still very important, not that they should get paid more. The term "afterthought" wasn't the correct term in my opinion. More risky is a better term.

THIS. Running backs may not be "a dime a dozen" exactly, but there's definitely a glut of good, serviceable running backs in the NFL right now. I feel like I see the phenomenon Wooly describes happening all the time -- a guy who you thought was a key cog in a particular team's offense gets hurt, and then some backup you've never heard of comes out of nowhere and kills it in relief. I suppose there are exceptions, but I do think that if I were a GM, unless my team runs a very specific offense that requires a running back with a very particular set of skills (lol), I would not pay top dollar for my running back. I'd find a young, hungry, healthy guy looking to make a name for himself who doesn't command top dollar, and save the big bucks for an elite DE, DB, QB, OT or other player at a position where it's harder to find a player who can do what you need him to do.

And I'll also echo that IMO RBs are very important. I actually don't like where the NFL is going. I don't like the rules that make it a pass happy game, nor the rules that take the excitement and fun out of defense. Back to my original point....

Isaac.... I don't care what position he plays. Stud RB, WR, LB, doesn't matter as long as he contributes. But like I said.....He may be better off as a LB if he wants a long term career in the new NFL. It's just how things are trending. Also, his height put him at additional risks compared to shorter RBs.

I still remember Greenberry tweeting all kinds of stuff about his in home... And about ND being the best place ever... And then going to Houston.

Not really worried about getting Issac.

Need to fill the two remaining spots with the four recruits on defense.
