Te'o provided cold, hard evidence. This is over folks.

I've lost some respect for Manti definitely, but I feel for him and will continue to root for him.

You lost respect for him because he's a sheltered Mormon kid raised next to his family all his life and thought he had something real with a woman for what I'm guessing is the first time?

Poor guy. He believed this girl existed up until 48 hours ago.... I feel so badly for him. They really did him dirty.

That's hard for me to hear. I truly hope that Manti will be able to regain your cyber-respect. :(

Manti's a victim of a total bastard, and he made a couple of mistakes along the way. Who the hell wouldn't? He was and continues to be a great kid!!!

Ive got NOTHING but love and respect for Manti.

So people think Te'o is the liar, huh? Well I think I know who is lying or misinformed after watching this little gem.

Absolutely belly laughing at that clip. OMG! Reminds me of the beauty contestant a few years back...Miss South Carolina possibly? Thanks for posting!

Not sure if anyone saw this, but . . .

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aGoVSEpy7cA?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And they wonder why Manti didn't want to do live TV....

You make a mistake and people assume you're lying or don't know what you're talking about. I'm really torn about deadspin right now because I love the site, the guys are really bright and they're good writers (and good reporters when they want to be). My worldview and deadspin's ethos usually line up pretty well.

But in this case, their hatred of Notre Dame, which has been long apparent but something that I chalked up to being overdone as shtick, has really impacted their coverage. Its clear they WANT Manti to have been involved and they have completely ignored the mounting evidence that tends to show he wasn't.

Since things were starting to make too much sense:

(from the ESPN article)
• A group of people, including a woman claiming to be Kekua, showed up at the team hotel for the Discover BCS National Championship Game in Miami. Te'o said he knew they were at the hotel because the group took photos in the lobby of the hotel. Te'o said it affected his play in the game, where Notre Dame lost to Alabama 42-14.

Manti.... "In our hearts forever....Love thee Notre Dame"

My son went to bed completely destroyed last night knowing that his "idol" was getting raked over the coals.... I look forward to having a conversation with him in the morning about what happened and the dangers of the world wide web.

Love ya, brah....

Manti, you are still a legend in my mind. You were naive, silly, dumb at times. It happens and your most humiliating moment has been shown to the whole world. If anyone can rise from this, you will, with a smile and forgiveness and God always on your mind.

Love theeeee Notre Daaaaaame!

I love Deadpsin... I don't think they're very bright though. They think they're a lot smarter than they are. But the part I bolded is most important here.... when they want to be. They break stories regularly and can be top notch. Then there are times when they OPENLY ADMIT TO BIAS against schools (namely Notre Dame and Duke) and runs tons of stuff that can only be classified as trolling.

That's not appropriate for any place that wants to be taken seriously.

But in this case, their hatred of Notre Dame, which has been long apparent but something that I chalked up to being overdone as shtick, has really impacted their coverage. Its clear they WANT Manti to have been involved and they have completely ignored the mounting evidence that tends to show he wasn't.

This hits the nail on the head. They are the ONLY place with any kind of source that has tried to implicate Manti. And that source was admittedly making an "80%" guesstimate based on assumptions.

Yet they refuse to back down from that position.

So the worst part about this whole thing is that Manti didn't do anything to deserve any of this. Poor guy was just trying to live his life and some sick ****s decided to mess with him. I could maybe (not really) understand if this was retribution for Manti doing something to someone, but he didn't do anything. This guy was just trying to live his life and they picked him to destroy. Nicest guy in the world.... What the hell is wrong with this world??????

Manti seems more real to me now than ever.
To all of us he was this larger than life figure that could do anything on the football field.
Now we know he is as much of a normal person as anyone of us.
I feel for him and hope this doesn't hurt him too emotionally in the future, as I have gone through instances that are similar.
Much love Manti.

This what I think of when I think of Manti:

Te'o was asked what he thought should happen to Tuiasosopo.

"I hope he learns," Te'o said. "I hope he understands what he's done. I don't wish an ill thing to somebody. I just hope he learns. I think embarrassment is big enough."

He added: "I'll be OK. As long as my family's OK, I'll be fine."

That is the kind of person we're talking about here. Manti made mistakes in this, no doubt, but it honestly hurts me to see what has been done to this kid - first the hoax itself and the emotional toll it took on him at the time, and now the aftermath where he has been embarrassed as badly as anything I've ever seen. My heart breaks for the kid. Spoken like a true Notre Dame man here.

Just curious... For what reason did you lose respect for Manti? Because he lied to his parents about meeting her in person or because he was naive? Or some other reason?

The tone has changed a lot on ESPN actually. Seems like people are giving him a break....
