Unfortunately I'll have to wait for Manti's interview to come to my own conclusion. As of right now, if Manti can make JS believe in him so much that he cries I have to lean towards believing that this was an incredible hoax that took full advantage of a gullible person. Manti needs to admit to making a few small lies that covered up the fact that he never met this girl in person (I think most would be understanding). I think one key point that would have saved Manti and ND from having to explain the situation in detail would be if they contacted law enforcement (even if it would lead nowhere). To be honest, that's one part of the story I can't get my head around.

"Yes, south bend police department im calling you to file a police report. One of my players had an online girlfriend and ummm we just found she wasnt real. Hello? Are you still there?"

When Swarbrick broke up I did not cry but tears came down my face-sometimes God allows a pure heart to be hurt to show the evil in the world for us to make a choice. The media should be ashamed and now I understand how this kid played so miserably in his most important game. Now the game looks sooooo unimportant. I dont know about you guys but my prayers were answered for this kid. Manti Teo a Notre Dame man.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress claim seems to fit the bill.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress is a tort claim, not a criminal offense.

For those of you in Rio Linda, that means Manti could sue but nobody is going to prison unless they could prove criminal harassment.

If that was prosecuted successfully, the precedent would shut the entire internet down.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress isn't a crime, it's a tort.

And, a Missouri woman was successfully prosecuted for creating a fake FB profile and bullying her daughter's classmate.

Sort of thing happens more than you think, but largely depends on state law.

Swarbrick and Te'o are lying. Who refers to a girl they have never met and who has fails to show up for several face to face meetings as their girlfiend?

Read: Well I sure don't understand how something could happen, and there can't be people who know or experience things that I don't know or experience, so anyone who claims said something happened are liars.

And if Manti did put this together...he's the dumbest person I've ever seen. As he had to know this would eventually come out with all the pub he gets.

I mean, either today or down the road, someone would've caught this.

So I have a hard time believing that he put this thing on.

The only solution to this is to win a BCS bowl next year. **** all of these ND haters... I cannot WAIT until next year when Golson and Daniels lead the offense to the best we've seen in awhile, we know the defense will do its part. GO IRISH

#1. No criminal act was performed by the people of the hoax so rule out law enforcement right away.

#2. Mr. Swarbrick said during his PC that the private investigation led them to believe that it was a hoax due to online conversations that was discovered between the people behind the hoax. What more do you want? Not to mention he added that Manti wasn't the only one in regards to these people.

#3. Saying you 'met' someone online is certainly a plausible thing to say especially in today's internet, social media crazed world.

#4. A lot of you need to come down from the high pedestal that you place yourself on and go look in the mirror.

#5. Give Manti a chance to face the world. Please tell me what Manti has to gain from all of this that he couldn't already gain from being the MLB of ND.

Who are you to make this statement? In this day in age, social media and online dating are a common place in our society. These things happen and happen often. Get used to it.

Easy there BBG - he's almost in double digit posts

I haven't read much of this thread, and I won't. Posts are too fast and furious.

But three or four years ago when I was single, and had been for a while, I went to a dating site. Found one. Then the story began, she was really foreign, so on and so forth. I spotted a story too good to be true, so I followed along. The bottom line is the mobster that was trying to sell this young Eastern European woman had a gun to her head, but he would relinquish if I sent $4000 to her dead drop account via wire, (hyperbole, but close enough that you get the idea). They even got some "Ivana Humpalot" sounding woman to call me, (only she sounded a tad more wired, because she had a gun pointed to her head.) The story I have told just skims the surface, the emails, getting past the security police, the naked pictures, delivered to me, the whole nine yards. I am telling you, I can absolutely see someone getting sucked down that rabbit hole. I finally told her that I would call the FBI, and that pretty much ended things, funny how abruptly her demeanor shifted. I knew it was a con, but I cannot tell you how bad the sense of loss I felt was. And how much I doubt I felt for just a second!

If this helps, someone told me that Americans get bilked out of 100's of millions of dollars this way every year! Loneliness leads to suspension of belief.

I have personally heard of rumors surrounding Manti, with this original story, before the revelation today, that things were just not right; but, what the hell did I know?

Again it is like the serial killer that people were amazed about, because he seemed like such a normal guy, when they are covering up the fact that anybody should have known what was in those bags, the one way doors, "enter only", or just have noticed the smell! Guilt covering laziness is an amazing thing, I hope that everybody understands how easy it is to get sucked into a story like this. Thanks to God, that I had such a suspicious nature after my last marriage ended, but we just had a house foreclosed on around the corner, of a gentleman that put his life savings into a life's dream from the Ukraine.

Can we get back to focusing on how much Chip Kelly and the Eagles are going to suck?

When police do an investigation someone who is lying their story will undoubtedly change over time and as far as I can see Manti's never did.

Actually not true.

The defamation caused and the possible monetary repercussions in the eve of the NFL draft as well as status image damaged endorsement wise make this a possible criminal case if money was demanded and most certainly civil.

There's no defamation here.
