It wouldn't surprise me if Montelus ends up being the first OL from this class to see the field. Doesn't mean I think he plays next year but could end up playing as a sophmore.

I agreed with this. I could see him taking Watt's position after a year of red shirting

Per ISD, they heard he had a great morning, but then they saw him get injured in the afternoon session when he went one on one against USC 5 star Kenny Bigelow and got destroyed. Sounds like a shoulder, and he did not return.

Yup. Dude is a straight beast, and if he were to combine with Vanderdoes AND freshman phenom Leonard Williams on that d-line??? Holy cow that would nasty. Thank Good Kiffin is still the coach and Eddie will probably go elsewhere...

Sapp says Montelus is clearly favoring the shoulder in practice but is still standing out in drills just physically. Built like a tank, great footwork ... will be a really good guard for us.

Irish offensive line commit John Montelus was thrown from working with the second group at tackle to the first East offensive line group at guard. The massive Massachusetts native looked a little out of place as he struggled to learn the new spot. His novice guard play stuck out most when working inside and trying to climb to the next level.

Unaccustomed to being the one who usually goes up to the linebackers in the outside zone scheme, he tended to work flat down the line and miss the linebackers shooting open air. The good thing for the Irish is none of his deficiencies were due to a lack of physical skill (and of course certainly not lack of size) and they were all corrections that are coachable if they decide to move Montelus around on the line in the future.

Massachuettes competition sucks, so I'm not surprised it's taking him time to adjust.

Plus, we all know he is going to end up at Guard anyway, so better to get some practice in now.

Yep, it sounds like he has had a rough week, but all I really need to know is that he has the physical tools. Kelly and Hiestand and the staff will take care of coaching him up once he gets to the Bend. Everyone who has seen him confirms that he has a college-ready body and is physically a great prospect. Boom. I'm satisfied.

It's looking more and more like Bivin and Elmer will be the first guys in their class to see the field though.

Let's keep in mind he also sat out a day with a shoulder injury and was reportedly very tentative to put it in harms way coming back.

With the way the other OL from 2013 are doing, it sounds like he can take a couple years to figure it out if the transition to college OL is difficult for him.

Lol literally less than a week ago people on here were talking about how he would likely be the first OL from this class ready. How quickly the tide changes haha.

Montelus is a stud. He unfortunately hurt his shoulder, and is playing out of position to boot. Let's cut him some slack on not relegate him to afterthought status just yet.

Great post, Ironman......I, for the life of me don't understand why some people think some of these OL are going to come in right out of high school and start from day 1?? These kids, while they mat have the size and strength to come in and play, most don't have the footwork that college steps require. It takes a special kid to come in and be ready to compete from day one.

Most players, OL or not, are not going to come in and displace a starter on a great team. However, when a team is thin at a spot, and a kid is really good, it happens all the time. If some people thought 1 of our 5 highly-rated OLmen was ready to step-in, that's not unthinkable... even if it looks like they were incorrect.

The only kid I think has a chance of getting significant early PT is Elmer, since he is HUGE and and will EE. He'll get a chance to hit the weights and adjust to college speed for a few months.

Exactly! It is just people talk. Making sure they are heard. Nobody knows much of anything. These are 18 year old kids.

I hope it didn't seem like I consider him an afterthought. Montelus is a great prospect and I expect him to be a great player for us, maybe quite early, as we know he is physically ready to contribute. All I was saying is that Bivin and Elmer appear to be the most advanced prospects right now based on the unqualified rave reviews they are drawing at AA practices.

Some say McGlinchey is ready to go. Here is the point: With Martin and Watt back, with Hegarty and Stanley healthy, with Hanratty, and solid backup behind Hegarty, as well as Lombard with a year under his belt, we should allow our fabulous line class to mature.

It seemed to me that one of the sub-plots of this OL recruiting year has been Elmer and Bivin being brushed off a little when they are away from the scouts, but always showing-up big time.

To me, Elmer is the best OLman we've gotten in a while- but I think he plays RT as long as Stanley is here, and he might stay their if McGlinchey or someone else comes along. I kind of see Bivin as a Watt- solid to the core. Montelus is the pure guard we have not had since Bullard left. He is going to be massive. McGovern just has the look of an NFL lineman, its hard not to project him as a future starter as well.

There's nothing in any of this which is negative about Big John. He's a Tackle who was asked to deal with being a Guard overnight, and do it in sophisticated "big boy" schemes --- i.e. requiring complexities that he had not experienced. Montelus is going to be a kick-a$$ lineman for us, and when Coach Hiestand has a chance John will be operating at championship levels at Guard ASAP. The Big Man is Champion Good. ALL our giants coming in seem to be.
