Bog, u make a great point in the depth of the team is getting to a place where it is going to be tough to get on the field early. However, not sure Danny spond would be a starting corner back on any team. Covering the slot is a lot different then lining up outside over #1 and #2 receiver.

Danny Spond is a 248 pounder that plays corner-back in the dime scheme. He could be all world at corner at any of the mid-majors. He could loose a little and probably play corner at most places. Oh, and he can massively mess up tight ends on the line and disrupt routes. And one more thing, I only saw one player with the athleticism to punch the ball out of a healthy Denard Robinson's hand's this year, and that was Danny.

Ben Counsel is behind Danny and ready to go. It takes a lot to learn Bobby D's defense at DOG and CAT. And there is Romeo. Don't rush things. Enjoy. We are getting crazy deep. Like three deep could start almost anywhere, (at some positions.) That shiit Kray!
I agree with most of this, but starting corner might be stretching it. Starting safety no doubt.

Remember, I am prone to hyperbole.

(But not so much in this case; watch him closely!)

Instead of getting in an argument about my use of hyperbole, or Spond's coverage skills, the point is that if things go according to the planned course that we can see unfolding, ND will have better athletes at linebacker than most schools do in their secondary. THIS WILL ALLOW US TO LOAD THE BOX, AND RECOVER for any play action, etc.

I fore see us having versatility with many players capable of playing OLB, safety, nickle back and dime back. Very astute observation my friend.

Can't wait to see him in Blue and Gold. Between Analzone and Jaylon coming on board (plus others already here and coming), it's not a stretch to say we'll likely have one of the best, if not THE best LB group in the country. Damn this feels good.

Last two people on the West bus because of interviews/autograph requests after practice? #NotreDame commits Corey Robinson and Jaylon Smith.
Looks like Jaylon is getting some love...and taking the time to hang with the fans.

This is the first point to be made. Several times when people have talked about the recruiting class of linebackers, Kelly has mentioned he would have love to have red-shirted Te'o. Secondly, from CAT and DOG, they are mirrors of the same thing. They both have to rush, play the run and seal the edge, and cover. The Dog position usually has a little more area, and has a number two WR as well as Tight End to cover. Kelly made it clear that Danny Spond could play well enough that in dime packages he played corner-back; Kelly clearly stated that Romeo was a DOG and that he would be a star. Counsell and Romeo are killing in practice. Hmmmm. Nice problem to have!

I think Jaylon will start out as the back-up DOG and nickel linebacker. With his unique athleticism, I think he will be able to play in space and cover immediately.

On the other hand, I think he will eventually move over to CAT if he bulks up even a little bit, which is very likely. Unless we start using our DOGs differently, Jaylon is just too fast to not be blindly rushing the passer every few downs.

I know that this is leaving a lot of talented guys off the field, but I love the idea of Jaylon, Randolph, Anzalone, and Okwara on the field at the same time. That would be an intimidating line-up.

Why would staying at DOLB hinder his ability to pass rush? Ideally, the ROLB and DOLB are mirror images of each other, both capable of covering, rushing, or setting the edge on any given down.

ISD got Eric Nahlin, a writer for InsideTexas, to help cover the Army All American game for them with an eye towards ND prospects, and man is he effusive in his praise for Jaylon. In his opening he likens Jaylon to a genetic splicing of Secretariat and Mike Singletary.

What I thought was incredible, and very noteworthy, were the reactions Eric got from other prospects in regard to Jaylon. He named both Su'a Cravens and Prevot as giving him looks that plainly stated they didn't believe they were in Jaylon's class when he tried to compare them in conversation. If Jaylon is impressing those kids like that, wow.

Dammm, I love this young man. I said that Manti is exactly what we portray ourselves to be to the rest of the College Football world, and he absolutely is and then some. Well watch out world because we have another young man with the highest of character, a natural leader, and a real good human being, who also happens to be able to ball with the best of them.

How can you keep Jaylon off the field next year?

There's a decent chance he leaves after playing 2 seasons if you "redshirt" him, and probably a 100% chance barring injury he leaves after 3.

Get him on the field early and often and hope he stays 4 years to get his degree.

No reason to assume he won't stay for his degree. Nothing he had done or said would lead one to believe he wouldn't graduate first. That said, I highly doubt he red shirts.

I am supremely confident the words "red" and "shirt" will not be uttered anywhere near Jaylon next year. He is the perfect example of a kid who is simply not a 5 year guy.
