RT @slmandel SI’s mock committee of 11 ADs selected this year’s 4-team playoff field. It was fascinating: bit.ly/114pQn4

Final Four: Notre Dame, 'Bama, Florida, Oregon; First Four Out: Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M, Stanford.

Selecting the four-team field
On a pair of Nov. 19 preparation calls, the group agreed to consider all teams in the BCS top 12, plus any remaining one-loss teams in the top 20. By Nov. 26, that list consisted of: 12-0 Notre Dame, 11-1 Alabama, 11-1 Georgia, 11-1 Florida, 11-1 Oregon, 10-1 Kansas State, 10-2 LSU, 10-2 Stanford, 10-2 Texas A&M, 10-2 South Carolina, 9-2 Oklahoma, 10-2 Nebraska and 11-1 Kent State. For the purposes of this exercise, the group was told to assume that the higher-ranked team would win this weekend's conference championship games. (Most notably, that meant assuming Alabama will hand Georgia a second loss.)

Committee members were given materials on each team several days in advance. To begin the call, Shaheen asked each member to submit his top four teams (in no order), which would become the first four discussed. The teams they chose -- Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia and Florida -- mirrored the current BCS top four. Oregon, LSU and Kansas State also received votes.

A whole lot more to read at the website.

Key points: #s 3 and 4 are going to be like picking 1 and 2 today. A LOT of people will be pissed off. They are going to have to include some kind of numbers analysis, it can't just be suits debating and deciding. This will most definitely lead to an expanded field.

Fixed.

I'd love to see some basic rules....
Like
-No more than 2 teams per conference
-Something to prevent a team like Oregon from going, while the conference champion Stanford sits home and watches.
-Some type of tiered grouping of schools like SEC, Big12, Big10, PAC12, ACC + ND are T1.
-Tier 1 schools considered must be undefeated or 1 loss
-Tier 2 schools considered must be undefeated
-Some type of SOS requirement to encourage better scheduling
-Some type of limitation on FCS oponents

I really wish they would have gone 8 teams. I'd prefer automatic qualifiers for the SEC, Big12, Big10, ACC, Pac12, and then 3 at large bids. Then conference champions priortized over non same conference non-champions.

This year it would likely be (assuming highest rated team wins and rules above) 1ND, 2Bama, 3KSt, 4Stanf, 5FSU, 6Nebraska, 7FL, 8Oregon. UGA gets hosed by UF unless you put in a divisional clause...

You're on to something here. There needs to be a single, (somewhat) objective SOS measure for all teams. SOS should be factored in from the beginning (so you can't get super penalized if all your teams **** the bed) and at the end (so you can get rewarded for beating teams that have proven themselves through the season).

What do you mean no? It says it right there...

So after ND grinded all season to remain the only [eligible] undefeated team, you would want the Irish to have to beat Oregon, Stanford (again), and then Alabama? Madness. Absolutely madness.

If it were 2014 we'd be playing FL or OR prior to a matchup with Bama... Only difference is no Stanford. Might suck when ND is #1, but if ND were #s 5-8, we wouldn't think it so bad....
