For the missed tackled on Graham:

I cut him some slack because he had that cast on his arm/hand so he probably couldn't quite wrap-up to make a tackle. That and Graham had great balance to come off that hit. He's done a great job for the team.

Oh, and for him being a soccer player, so what. We had another in Shane Walton and he did quite well for Dame.

Kid is tough for sure. He has however, been burned pretty bad a couple of times in the passing game. He's lucked out a number of times with the receivers dropping the ball after they got behind him.

lol, Miami game and that is about it... who cares. People make mistakes, Teo missed a tackle against Wake Forest last game, why are you guys not having this discussion on his thread?

Farley has been great back there and he is still very young. Bashing him and saying he is the weak link is hardly legitimate. Some of you guys overreact.

He's a redshirt freshman playing his first year at safety. I'd say he's done pretty damn well.

No kidding, and he wasn't even getting first team reps throughout spring ball and fall camp. Anyone criticizing Farley needs to find a loved one to hug on this Thansgiving day. In my book, he has been such a pleasant surprise. He's still a pup - what more can one expect?

I'm not gonna pick this apart by pointing out some other blown assignments that lead to big plays and or TD's. Anyhow, I'm not sure how a legitimate criticism amounts to "bashing" someone. There's always room for improvement. Needless to say I'm sure everyone (myself included) is pleasantly surprised with the DB play this season.

Farley has outplayed his expectations since he arrived on campus. Even ignonring the fact that he changed from WR to S, he's still be a stout part of this defensive scheme. He's put on the weight. After Slaghter went down, he's learned the position, and this year, he has excelled at getting to the ball. Love this kid. Best "Next Man In" thus far this season.

Here the facts about big plays from the Who is D is better, Alabama or ND thread:

"Opponents have struggled to move the ball through the air against both Alabama and Notre Dame. Both teams have allowed just six pass touchdowns and rank in the top 11 in pass efficiency defense."

"Notre Dame’s secondary has been questioned, but the Irish have allowed just seven completions on 41 pass attempts thrown 20 yards or longer downfield. The Tide have allowed 13 completions on 50 such passes."

"Notre Dame has allowed 14 plays that have gained 25 yards or more, tied for second fewest in FBS. Alabama has allowed 20 such plays, tied for 13th in FBS. Alabama and Notre Dame are tied with Florida for the fewest touchdowns of 25 yards of longer (1) allowed this season."

"Notre Dame is one of the best red zone defenses in recent history. The Irish have allowed a touchdown on 24.1 percent of their opponents’ red-zone drives this season, the lowest percentage for any FBS team in the last eight seasons. Overall, Irish opponents have scored seven touchdowns and committed five turnovers in 29 red-zone possessions."

So yes, it is very legitimate to talk about the facts. The fact is ND has given up big plays and touchdowns at a historically low rate.

Other questions:
Is the D-line loaded? Yes, potentially Tuitt and Nix are All Americans (2nd or third teams).
Are the LB's elite? With a potential Heisman winner, Spond is playing AA caliber, the emergence of Shembo and Williams, and the Fox Cambrese tandem..... yes, it's an elite unit.
Has the DLine and LB play helped our secondary? Yes, without a doubt.
Is the secondary the weakest unit on the defense? Sure, I'm not sure anyone can say it isn't, give the quality of the other units.

But when looking at secondary play, ND simply hasn't given up big plays or passing TD's (as compared to other teams this year.).

When Lo Wood went down, We were all nervous. BUT when Slaughter went down, this board thought the secondary was toast. It simply didn't happened. Mathias Farley has been played at a level no one anticipated this year. He played four days after having two screws placed in his wrist. He's good, he's still learning, he's tough. The dude deserves mad props for his play.

Agree with most of this, but I would have gone with Russell as best NMI.

I could have swore we were discussing the play of one player specifically, not the defense as a whole. Anyhow, relax. You guys are acting like I'm killing baby seals or something. Haha. If it makes you feel better I've stated that if we play a clean game we can beat anybody, hence discussing some areas of concern and or where there is room for improvement. So when in this players case I see a blown assignment that leads to a TD and another that should have been a TD against say BYU it gives me pause.

and he was called the "Weak Link" here this past week.

Yep. I don't know if we have a weak link. The TEAM seems to have impressive unity, making everyone play better. If he is the weakest link, our weakest link was pretty damn impressive tonight.

Imagine our secondary in three years with Farley and Russell as four year starters with Shumate, Cole Luke, and maybe Redfield.

Dear Lord.

Dear Lord.

If we can pick up one or more guys like Max, Mack, Willis, LJ, etc., our depth will be crazy good. Competition will make them all better. If we can get one or more of them, plus some quality DLs in the 2014 class, WOW in terms of the D for the next four years.

Amazing player. I would have never expected him to be this good this soon. Some great young players in this secondary. Can you imagine if Jamoris Slaughter gets a 6th year? We'll have Jackson, Russell, Farley, Baratti, Slaughter, Shumate, and Wood all back there next year. Next year's secondary could be amazing.

He came up huge on the safety blitz every time they did it. But he still needs to improve on tackling. Yes everyone likes the huge hit but if it doesn't take him down it doesn't count for anything. Also not the best coverage guy. There is going to be a lot of try outs next spring for these to safety spots.
