After watching the video, I don't consider this kid Irish anymore ("I'm committed right now, but I'm still taking visits."). His disappointment with the distraction that the decommittment "rumors" have caused him are not particularly compelling. If you don't want distractions, don't schedule visists while you are commmmitted. If you don't want people thinking your commttment is shaky, don't take visits.

Still I agree with the staff's approach. If he comes, great. If not, hope we get someone better.

He seems uneasy by everything and the spotlight. Maybe he isn't the kind of kid that will flourish at a school like Notre Dame. Time will tell.

Ridiculous statement.

"He (might be) gone. [Insert justification here]." Just stop it. You sound like a jilted ex.

Well at least there are other options out there if he does decide to switch it up. Hope we go out on top this year and that will give the staff plenty of momentum on the trail. Either way though we should have plenty of that to go around, great season!

Shut the front door on your way out, please.

Don't come back if you're going to make ridiculous statements like that.

I'd rather not. All I was saying is that not everyone can handle being in the spotlight at such a prestigous school, so they choose schools like UW and Michigan State and Cal, Arizona etc.. Being high profile isn't for everyone. Just like playing for the Yankees wasn't for Randy Johnson. Maybe it's not for him and maybe it is, only time will tell.

Jilted? I don't care of he stays or goes to be honest. I like the kid but he's not a class make or brake kind of kid. I just don't know if he is up to the task of playing at a high profile school like ND. Maybe Cal, UW, Arizona or somewhere else fits his personality better.

when you are a 3 star recruit i dont think coming to a big time program like ND is a big deal. I dont think Jake Golic loses too much sleep over his lake of playing time for instance.

What is the point in making a statement like this about one of our recruits when you have no idea what he is like personally, though? Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Yeah I thought it was a valid point and I don't understand how it was ridiculous. Not everyone wants to have a crazy amount of pressure on them like a team like ND would where fans follow all the players movements and if they don't develop the way people think they should then they are called busts. Doesn't mean their is anything wrong with the kid.

While that may be true, it's still a cheap shot to take at kid who's currently committed to ND.

We don't know why Danny is wavering. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt here.

I'd imagine the coaching staff are well aware if he has the personal make up to deal. If not, they probably wouldn't have gone after him in the first place.

You have ZERO evidence to support Danny being one of "those" kids. Just stop it.

Danny is a high school senior. At this point in my high school days I wasn't even thinking about college, let alone where I wanted to play football. Give Danny some slack. If he chooses to remain at Notre Dame we will gladly accept him. He is one heck of a football player. If he chooses to go elsewhere then let him make that decision without a bunch of **** from us ND football fanatics.

This is a major decision that will effect the rest of his life. It's a decision he needs to make with his family. What we think his decision should be is totally irrelevant.

Pretty much sums it up right there :)

Once Notre Dame offers a kid and he accepts, I will think of him as one of us. Like any family, there will always be bumps in the road but he's still one of us until he isn't.

He will always have respect from me because even if he doesn't end up Irish, he could have and that's a pretty select group.

This.

I always thought the community mentality that ND provided was something unique in comparison to other programs.

I thought it was a valid suggestion brotha and no reason for people to get upset about it. I mean... it is a message board right? Your just stating an opinion just like everyone else. I get exactly what your saying and it does make sense so your guess is as good as mine. For me I hope he stays Irish but time will tell.

It makes perfect sense. I am guessing which is what a lot of people on message boards do. I might be right and I might be wrong. By the way, no one on here knows what he is like personally.

Support your suggestion with evidence. Otherwise, you're speculating... and not in a good way.

Nope, doesn't make perfect sense, because in this case your "guess" comes in the form of baseless inference about an ND commit's lack of confidence or ability to compete in high pressure situations. Absolutely no need in my mind to make such a statement about someone with no reason, especially when he is supposed to be a part of the ND family. It's funny to me that the same type of people who ripped Les Miles for his childish rant about Gunner's "lack of chest" are the same who can turn around and do something similar. I just don't get it.

Question is: Do you drop Danny if someone else wants in, If Danny is still on the fence?

Absolutely. If you have a player whom you like who says they are all in and will stop entertaining other offers, Mattingly should be given an ultimatum, either stop looking or we are withdrawing the offer.

You don't do this if the alternative is greatly inferior to Mattingly, but if it is close and the replacement has upside, cut Mattingly loose. It protects us from being left in the lurch late in the process and it sends a powerful message to other recruits who will think twice before they jeopardize their ND scholarship like Mattingly.

So if memory serves me, this kid has offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and quite a few others.

Just saying guys.........we might regret this one some day......those are some impressive programs. Maybe we focus on trying to keep young Mr Mattingly instead of trying to find his replacement. I can see this kid being a monster TE or a fantastic LB. I for one would like to see this kid stick with ND.

I know that we are trying to keep him. But unlike last year so we don't get left at the alter we are having other plans in place if he spurns us.

I don't know why kids commit to schools knowing that they aren't sure where they really want to go. An early signing period would solve this growing problem. Basketball has one, why can't football?
