I'm sorry for joking around in this thread. States seceding is a serious problem and not to be taken lightly.

In related news, Lincoln has been getting stellar reviews.

First of all, the idea of states seceding is dumb. But I see that you all aren't really talking about that anymore. Because I value my sanity, I'm not going to go read back through this thread or try to interject in the impressive debate taking place here.

I will just say that I would absolutely LOVE for the "red states" to secede and make a go of it. They would be a third world country inside of a decade.

Talk about "I lol'd"

Actually I'm pretty sure if "red states" were to secede, both "new countries" would be cast into the third world fairly quick. It would be hard to feed large cities like New York, Chicago, and L.A., with more then half the nations farm lands gone. So lets be thankful that this is just a news story to pass time until the next hurricane or snow storm.

I hate when I read through a thread and have to scroll back up to the title to see what the hell it was started for again...

Buster, I'm from NY and have had the displeasure of spending the last 3 years living in MS. The obesity down here is out of control and the blame falls on both the people and government.

The people are just plain ignorant. My wife is a therapist and treats tons of obese, diabetic patients all over MS and AL. One story in particular dropped my jaw. Long story short.. On a visit, my wife noticed a patients trailer was full of McDonald's and other fast food bags.. she simply said maybe they should try to eat healthier. The next time she returned the patient proudly displayed to my wife a new, "healthier" snack she was consuming. It was a ****ing bag of fruit snacks! Like Gushers lol.. and she was like "this is like fruit n stuff right? All, good for ya"...

It's the ignorance/stupidity on the people and the govts inability to create jobs. There used to be manufacturing plants here... In my city there is a Navy base holding it all together. If they ever lost that, the whole place would crumble.

The obesity here is linked with unemployment. It's pretty simple. People are broke so they eat the cheapest food available because they can buy it in bulk.. also there is no health campaign whatsoever. It's quote depressing and I think its overwhelming for the people here.. almost like an inescapable future.

You won't find that in a place like NY.. there is just simply more life, more energy. Yes there will always be obesity to a certain degree but some places just give people more to live and strive for.. MS gives nothing.

Sorry, I'm on my phone and about to pass out.. I'm pretty sure I tried to make a point but may have strayed way off..

IDK, that could be true. But if they seceded they'd just be Canada Light. I don't wish any ill on them. I want to see the dark red states try to make a go of it on their own. We should have let them go the last time they tried it. If they had succeeded they would be so poor they would be trying to sneak into Mexico to get jobs and Mexico would be trying to figure out how to deal with their immigration problem.

I once had a guy who worked at my uncle's industrial park say to me, when I saw oil in the water from the drinking fountain, "you eat french fries don't you? That's the same oil. God made it all." I would have laughed, but I was too sad for him. I had another guy there who asked me to read his speeding ticket to him, he was 25. He had a daughter. He couldn't ****ing read. No wonder you make $8/hr mowing lawns.

Just to be clear, my point isn't that government can't solve these problems, it's that we haven't and it's because of the huge bureaucracy. We need funding and all. It's a super super complicated issue.

I think it's worth noting, in regards to the Navy base, a lot of times Congress won't cut things because representatives would lose something in their district. We won't see the USPS cease to exist, it's too many "jobs." We won't see the UAW fail, they're in too many districts and in too great of numbers. It's mind-boggling. It's always the other party's fault, huh?

Seems like angry ones want out but I doubt the movement gets enough people

"We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity. But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity... Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years."

Um, then where would we get all the good football players?

I for one don't like either party, and today's political system in gneral. Corrupt, and more about politics, power, careers, and party agenda than doing the right thing (whatever that is). If one knows our history, it's pretty clear what our founding fathers had in mind. If you think our government (both parties) haven't strayed and deviated from that course, I would have to question your interpretation of history.

While I do believe this (seceding) is party motivated and silly, I would caution anyone from calling someone a traitor because they want something different, or are fed up. Our founding fathers were once called traitors. Today we call them the first patriots. Also, to suggests that either party is an accurate representation of the population, is a bit funny. A little under 60% voted in the 2008 election. That means a majority is 30% of the nations eligible voters.

To go further, non-party think tanks and analysts would argue that fewer than 30% of the voting population (now you are down to 18% of eligable voters)actually understand the issues (current economics, foreign affairs, etc), and the candidate's full platforms. Instead they either voted blindy due to party (my daddy was XX, so I'm a XX), ethnicity, race, etc., or made their decision primarily based on one polarizing policy (immigration, health, etc.).

Am I un-American for being disappointed in our political system, I don't think so. Do I vote, yes, I think it's my civic duty. Do I want to sucede, no. Am I happy with America right now, hell no. One positive, I think the majority of this board are amoung the 18%.

If they leave could we still recruit Texas or will the sanctions that will follow most likely make that impossible?

I'm now hearing Jerry Jones has put his hat in the ring for the next president of Texas. Lane Kiffin in Cali. Wouldn't be disappointed if either of those states left.

Would love to see the average medical expenses & government aid (medicare/medicaid) per capita in those states.

Would not be wise.

Note: I did not read through the whole thread

So you are pulling the whole if you don't agree with me you don't know anything? Well I for one disagree with you. Who the Hell knows what the founders would do if they were dropped into 2012. We know what they thought of issues back in the late 1700's and early 1800's. They had some fantastic ideas and they also thought that african americans shouldn't vote (and should be slaves), that women shouldn't vote, treated the native americans like **** and many other ideas that we find foreign now. The fact of the matter is that most people (by most I mean 99.9999999%) of people are products of their time and place and rarely rise above it. While I don't always agree with the way the parties lead our country, the whole idea of this isn't what our Founders wanted is asinine as who knows what they would think or feel in 2012.

Oh you mean childish antics like democrats in congress and state governments doing "walk outs" because they know if they vote they will be in the minority? That's progress people.
