Louis Nix. He consistantly takes on 2 -3 lineman every play. This is a huge part why this defense is one of the most dominant in all of college football. It is easy to overlook his impact by the casual fan but would Manti be in the Heisman talk if it wasn't for Nix, KLM, and Tuitt freeing him up to make those explosive plays? I doubt it and that is not a slight on Manti because I truely believe he is the most influential player in all phases. I just appreciate big Lou bringing it every play and being the unselfish player in this defense that you need for the unit to be dominant.

The whole secondary. Always getting doubted. Yet, nothing is going through. Accountability has taken a whole new level this year.

Nix is definitely not unsung.

I think that award for this season [so far] would go to Dan Fox, a player I have been highly critical of in the past. Like Te'o, he appears to be faster and more mobile than just last season.

Russell IMO. He is playing above average if he was a senior. The fact he is a freshman recruited to play RB makes him exceptional.

People rave about him every week.

If anyone on this defense is unsung, it's Danny Spond. His ability to seal off the edge is crucial to our run defense this year.

I have to say that the whole Irish secondary goes unsung, whenever they talk about Notre Dame on Espn they always fail to mention the back 4, what these guys have done this season is unbelievable, considering 2 of them are freshman

Unsung? I gotta go with Schwenke/Springmann. The depth has been invaluable to the D rotation and while there is a drop in talent when Tuitt/KLM/Nix are out, these two have held their own quite impressively.

As it regards to IE I think we catch on to pretty much anyone doing well. So at this point, I can't say we have an unsung hero. IMO

Diaco is the unsung hero boys... let's keep Diaco in the dark as long as possible to keep him off the radar of other schools.

Zeke Motta deserves some props for his leadership as well as his strong run support.

Seems to me all Clausen2Kamara is doing is paying a compliment and respects to Nix. He's jumping back in and I appreciate he's back.

Sung to unsung... (hero or not)

1) T'eo
2) Tuitt
3) Nix
4) Shembo
5) KLM
6) BJ
7) Spond
8) Motta
9) KR
10) Fox
11) Farley

If I had to designate someone on the defense as underappreciated, I'd say KLM, Fox, or Springmann.

Fox and Spond are the most unsung in my opinion. Also, while he gets a decent amount of praise among Irish fans, I think Bennett Jackson is playing at an elite level.

Charlie Weis is obviously the unsung hero of the defense. Not only did he recruit Te'o, but if he didn't finish a crummy season with four straight losses in '09 we may not have gotten BK and Diaco in 2010.
