Serious Question But Who Exactly Are "The Fightin' Irish"?

The Celtic scum seem to have a favourite scarf that seems to crop up every time they are on Sky for their pre match rendition of the Liverpool song.

This scarf ever crops up today in the picture that accompanies Dr Death's piece in the Scotsman.

Having seen all sorts of scarf's confiscated at Ibrox over the years for petty reasons the question has to be asked.....

Who exactly are the Fightin' Irish?

Notre Dame - One of the biggest College football teams in the US.

Nickname for notre dame college american football team in the US. What in the name of God that has to do with the manks is beyond me

Maybe they're just talking in general about the influx of Irish in countries all over the globe over the past 150 years who took alcoholism and fighting with them wherever they went?

#5
Ask the wifeys.

#6
They did'nt fight during WW2.
Good point well made

The fighting Irish name origonated in New York and Boston and was not given as a badge of honour. Rather they were loathed as drunken, unreliable hoards who caused trouble wherever they went.

#8
All of them

#9
the story i heard was the name was taken from a regiment in the us civil war ,the priests who formed the university gave the name to their football team .plastic paddy sh*te i know .

On a related note, Notre Dame regularly play Penn State. The games are always filled with a load "holding" and "illegal use of the hands" penalties.

Notre Dame. If anyone follows college football or basketball they will almost instantly be your most hated team

Penn State was one filthy beast.

With Notre Dame, it's their culture and heritage.

Didn't know Scottish Division Three teams had message boards...

Rangers has anti-Catholic and anti-Irish fans. Nothing new here. I'm just enjoying the fact that they are a dead club.

Shouldn't the title have Been "Glascow Rangers ethnic hatred for the Irish people" ?

It's really not about ND but rather 500 years of hatred taught at home and school.

Isn't it grand that while we have differences in religious views here in the US, we don't come near the level of sectarian violence they have back across the pond.

Wrong game. Now if you get Rick Reilley to write a piece about how they are irrelevant-- strike that; he's never written anything on point; don't expect that to change anytime soon [ever].

You and Rick Reilley have something in common then.

i cant pull up a link now but Vice.com did an excelent doc on YouTube about the Rangers/Celtic rivalry. During the famine, many Irish also went to scotland, where they were hated, lots of protestant catholic hate still going on in the form of this single soccer rivalry.... even tho both teams suck

Steady!!!! Our first and one of our greatest ever managers stated clearly were we stood.....

"It's not the creed nor his nationality that counts. It's the man himself."

Rangers on the other hand, refused to sign any Catholic from 1873 until the 1980's.

Our greatest ever Manager the great Jock Stein (a protestant) said.......

"Jock, if there were two players, one Catholic and one Protestant. Who would you sign?"
"The Protestant"
"Why?"
"Because I know that Rangers would never sign the Catholic"

When Jock was accosted by some Rangers fans....................

Rangers fan: 'You only won the European Cup because you had 7 Protestants in your team!'
Stein (himself a protestant) responded: 'Well you've never won it and you've got eleven!'

For me, his greatest quote of all, to the Celtic team just before they went out to play Inter Milan, in the European Cup Final................

"We must play as if there are no more games, no more tomorrows......................"

My supporters club that is based in the North East of England and travels up to every game, is mostly geordies, who couldn't give a feck about religion and love the Celts for their history, style of play and passion.

Also, we are in the Champions League, which is the elite of world football. Second in our group behind Barcelona.

:wbanana:

125 Celtic 125 Notre Dame, God bless you all!
