The question is:
Best classic rock band of all time?

The question is NOT what do you think of others opinions.

Listen bud, I say this with nothing but love and respect because I consider you my boy. But If you bring up a ****** rock band in a thread about the greatest classic rock bands, you're gonna have a bad time.

It strayed from classic rock almost immediately. Kiss is an iconic and fun rock band. I didn't care for them too much when I was a long haired, stoned rocker in the 70's, but I saw a few of their later concerts and they're a blast to see live. Chill and have fun. Let us hear what you like, not how you feel about others opinions. If you keep this up, the next thing you know someone is gonna show up in this thread quoting stats on rock bands...not too far behind that someone will start typing five paragraph posts on the pros and cons of loud music, and on, and on.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I absolutely hate the Beatles. Yes, I know that they changed music forever. Doesn't mean I have to like them or think they are the best ever. I had a roommate in college who only listened to the Beatles and he listened to them every day. Can't remember the number of times I wanted to take a sharp object and rupture my ear drums.

Funny. I was the same way with my roomates who listened to Phish, Widespread Panic, and Grateful Dead. Minus a few songs from each, I would rather run into building on fire that listen to that.

Seems like there is a disconnect on the definition of classic rock. I heard NIN Pretty Hate Machine songs on a classic rock station the other day. Is there a time-frame for the term classic rock? Does modern music slip into classic rock category after a certain number of years. Is there a Classic Rock Period say like the "Baroque period" of classical music? Seems like most of us see that era as late 60s-70s blues and riff-based music with some sort of front man and mythical ethos about them.

I would like to add CSNY to my list, but they were more folksy than say Van Hagar, I mean Van Halen. See what I mean. Is Bob Dylan Classic Rock? I would include him too cause he is awesome and he eventually went electric.

There was nothing pop about the albums Rubbersoul, Revolver, Yellow Submarine, Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Abbey Road and Let it be.

These albums were innovative, groundbreaking, even avant garde They were amazing. Go to youtube and listen to Tomorrow Never Knows from Revolver. Its incredible. It was recorded in 1966. This is what people mean when they say they were 30 years ahead of their time.

According to MTV the Beatles are nothing more than a "boy band"... I agree.... They just happened to be the first one which drove them to the fame and success that they achieved. It's amazing what millions of screaming teenage girls can do for an artists or band's career....

Battle Of The Boy Bands - The Beatles Vs. New Kids On The Block

I love all you guys that dig the Beatles. Just giving you a hard time!

Would it upset you if I told you that their movies are what make me (1) not put them in the classic rock band category, (2) not put them in the rock group category, and (3) place them squarely in the pop category. I like their music, and they were the measuring stick and bar setter for things to come, and I agree they did some amazing things with the limited technology of the 1960s. but I can't say they are the greatest classic rock band of all time.

The crazy thing is that there are bands that have evolved this type of music that exist and are playing today, they just aren't owned by corporations and don't get the airtime.

The band Girls is like a direct reincarnation of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zepplin rolled into one.

Arcade Fire is a band whose concerts rock out just as they did.

Portugal. The Man is basically a modern Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

The Tallest Man Of Earth is essentially Bob Dylan.

Modern rock today is just pathetic. Everyone is trying to be Eddie Vedder and post-Grunge and they're just terrible at it. I live Nirvana and the like, but rock on the radio is dead.

I'm surprised Steely Dan has not sprung up yet. Aja is a great album. I still have a 45 in original jacket.

Love the Beatles. Yes they were progressive, and yes they were ahead of their time,,, but I just don't FEEL them. That's the great thing about music. It's all about individual taste. If I'm blowing down the highway in my jacked up, rednecked out 93 YJ, I'm rocking out to one of the above, not the Yellow Submarine. To each his own, but give me Young Lust, The Jack, All Along the Watchtower, Cold Gin, Take Your Whiskey Home, Dream On, etc.. Maybe Helter Skelter, but honestly I'd rather hear the Crue's version. Don't get me wrong, I have all The Beatles tunes, and listen often, just not when I want to ROCK OUT. Smoke out maybe...

But was it classic rock?

Elton John had some kick *** tunes. I'm surprised nobody mentioned Jefferson Airplane or Hendrix. The Doors too.

Aerosmith is my favorite band all time. Lots of great music, but didn't have a #1 hit until the 90s which is odd looking back now. Didn't even know they existed until '95 when I was in 7th grade. Love the old stuff now.

After Aerosmith, in no order:

ACDC
Dr. Hook
Queen
Scorpions
Boston
Cars
Rush
Zepplin
KISS

As far as bands I hate...I never really liked Steely Dan, shoot me. The only song I liked by Steely Dan is probably "The Joker." F*** "Fly Like an Eagle," I turn the station if that song comes on.

Someone else mentioned Genesis. I don't have any big beef with Genesis persay, but Phil Collins can get pushed down a flight of stairs for all I care. I've convinced my wife that Phil Collins and his robot voice will take over the world in 2012, thats how the world ends.

I believe you are thinking of The Steve Miller Band and not Steely Dan. Huge difference, LOL.

LOL. I would say he can definitely sing, and love me some EJ, but I don't think of Rockin Out to EJ. I'll even go as far as saying I shamelessly sing out loud while cranking a couple of his CDs, but just have a different definition of rock I guess. Probably symantics, but I've got him listed under the pop category on my ipod.

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK.......

Listen I like to rack and roll all night and part of everyday as well, but what is classic rock? Is it a genre? Is it popular songs from previous generations? Or is it a way to group together great bands and artists?

Just because Poison had hits in the 80's, does that make them classic rock? According to the classic rock radio it does. I don't think there is any doubt that The Velvet Underground is significantly greater than Supertramp but you won't hear them on classic rock radio. If that is the definition we are using then fine, Kiss, Boston, are classic rock. But if we are measuring greatness, influence, impact when discussing "classic rock" then bands need to be called out for sucking. I can provide graphs. :)
