There's a lot of Gerry Faust in Brian Kelly/NFL Thread

It appears my punishment has been taken care of for me.

These replacement refs have been bad. That run back by Cobb was really nice and if that flag wasn't picked up, I would have gone ballistic. This coming from a Giant fan.

Um...that flag shouldn't have been picked up.

Did you see the replay? I don't mean to be a jerk, but there was clearly a block in the back. Both announcers pointed it out, NBC and Tony Dungy just pointed it out...

I know you're not being a jerk. I didn't take it that way even if I removed you saying you're not being a jerk so don't sweat it.

I saw the replay once and didn't think so which is when I posted. I didn't really give it a solid look. Just from my once over I say no but I tend to let guys play a little bit more then these refs do.

Like the roughing the passer call on Clay Matthews earlier in the game, I didn't think that was.

Since I was otherwise occupied this weekend and late to the conversation, three things:

2-0

ICON Purdue Game Day - YouTube

Some people call me a homer. But if by homer you mean don't construct an alternative reality to be able to justify bad behavior, (end of game booing, bitching about not winning pretty enough, putting posters down, etc., just to name a few), well then I guess I am a homer. Because I am losing interest in dealing with said people.

Gotcha. From what I saw, there was a pretty blatant block in the back. But, it wasn't necessarily the one they called. Hard to say.

Didn't see the roughing.

I'm trying to decide if the officiating was worse today than normal or if we're all just looking for it to be worse. I tend to think it's the latter, but I'm curious what everyone here thinks.

The big thing is the inconsistency of the calls, IMO.

A) awesome picture change.

B) Nice change of the title. I was just tired of the nonsense being spewed in here so steered things away from it. I had some help.

I was happy to help Peoria.

Perhaps a new "day after gameday" tradition?

Derail stupid threads.

My sincerest apologies to Mr. Swanson, he is an American hero though.

Love that my Vikes came back and tied the game on the long FG and then won in OT. Also loved watching Harrison Smith break up the pass in OT for them.

Who is everyone rooting for tonght?

I am rooting for the Broncos by default, as I hate the Steelers.

Broncos. I want the Broncos to go on a huge run to prove that Tebow isn't very good. Spiteful? Probably.

This thread should be saved and preserved for the end of the year. Then we can all point and laugh at whoever was wrong.

Gotta work in about 12 hours, but I'll be damned if Peyton didn't get that one back.

He's not going to make it here, and we're in for two more years mediocrity. All the hallmarks of "Faustball" are there:

1. Poor overall game management. Burning timeouts unnecessarily. Undisciplined players jumping offside, and/or killing drives with stupid penalties. Schizophrenic call playing from one week to the next. No offensive identity. Worse, Faust managed to upset some good teams. Kelly is not going to do that, and is going to lose more games to lousy teams. Tulsa, Navy, USF. It's going to happen again this year. Kelly simply does not have the organization ability, or the identity to prevent it from happening.

2. Who in their right mind takes the only true game breaker on his team, and sits him for the entire game? I'm talking about George Atkinson III. Clever Kelly had the bright idea to put the entire gameplan on the passing skills a true sophomore QB in his second game. That gameplan took his best player off the field. This is simply horrendous personnel allocation. Who does that? I'll tell you who: Gerry Faust clones who have no grasp of establishing a disciplined, consistent identity.

3. Watching the entire team look at Kelly for guidance during every snap in the second half was like dealing with constipation. Instead of having an offensive identity and running the offense, Kelly turns the focus to himself in some perverse notion that he can spontaneously make the right calls. Of course he can't, and we end up looking like a bad WAC team.. He can't recognize the defense and call the right play on the critical 3rd down play to keep the drive going, and the offense is scrambling to get the call off in time before the play clock expires. And the worse it gets the more he inserts himself into grab bagging to try to make something happen. Of course, nothing does and we have zero identity on offense. So, he changes QB's for the third straight friggin year, as if the QB is the answer. Brian, you are the problem, and no change of QB is going to fix your mediocrity. Great coaches establish an offensive identity and utilize their best players in a consistent establishment of an identity which eventually lead to excellence and domination. Kelly grab bags week to week. Seriously. We're back to Tommy Rees? You bet your *** we are, as this guy has zero ability to establish an identity, develop it and perfect it.

One last thing: If this guy keeps up with stuff like comparing the stadium to the Basilica, or blaming the players, the atmosphere, the turf etc., the fans in the stadium are going to steadily turn on him in the same way they turned on Faust and Davie. If there's one thing ND fans hate, it's excuse makers who are unable to say "The buck stops here". They turned on Kelly today, and it will get worse if he continues to say such incredibly stupid things and keeps laying these turds. The fans are fed up with this incredibly lousy football and all the stupid excuses and sideshow distractions. They want results, and it is obvious that we are nowhere near the development that people expect. Kelly deserved to be booed. There will be more to come, because like Faust, he's in way over his head.

Faust vs. Kelly is no comparison. Faust was a good (not great) high school coach with superior talent because Moeller was recruiting southwest Ohio, southeast Indiana, and northern Kentucky and playing the area public schools who had to make do with homegrown talent. In short, he had superior talent in every high school game he coached. When he went to Notre Dame, he was way over his head. He still had superior talent in nearly every game he coached, but he had reached the level of his ineptitude. He was consistently out-coached by coaches with less talent.

Kelly, on the other hand, has made a career out of winning with less talent than the other teams on his schedule. He gradually recruited sufficient talent and character to turn around three programs before accepting the Notre Dame job. At Notre Dame, he and his assistants have done a masterful job of recruiting, and "his players" are starting to take on key roles in the success of the team. The climate is totally different than the Faust years. In three years he has taken the team to where it has a very promising future.

Last year the team was plagued by turnovers and injuries. Kelly didn't fumble the ball or throw an interception all last year. And he certainly didn't injure his own players. We easily could have finished 9-3 or 10-2. This year, with the thoughest schedule in the nation, he has us off to a 3-0 start. We have a good chance to reach the 9-3 or 10-2 mark once again. With our schedule, 8-4 would be a good season.

If we want to be 10-2 or 11-1 every year, Jack Swarbrick is going to have to ease up on the schedule. We are asking a lot to win every game when we play 6 to 7 top 25 teams every year. There's a reason why Stoops and Meyer didn't want the Notre Dame job. I suspect it had a lot to do with the high expectations and the difficult schedule. Kelly accepted the challenge and has us headed in the right direction. He definitely outcoached Dantonio last Saturday night.

I cannot believe all of the people who cannot see the truth of the post above. I remember when I was a young boy. Much of religion confused me, and around Easter, I asked my dad, "Why did people kill Jesus if he was the son of God?" My dad looked at me and uttered one word, "Stupidity." It was all he said. I asked him what he meant, and how anyone could be that stupid, and all he replied was, "Just you wait, you will see when you get older." Just another example of what my dad was talking about.
