My Indiana in-laws are the biggest hicks I have ever met in my life. That's saying a lot considering I was born and raised in middle Tennessee. My ex-inlaws that live in Beaver Falls Pa. are the most miserable alcoholic folks I have ever met. As for SEC football, I argue with those fans that the Irish will play anybody, anytime, anywhere. I even bring up the fact that back in the early nineties that the Irish was the SEC champ, for all practical purposes. Now in "recent" memory I don't have much of a leg to stand on regarding the Irish and the SEC. I can say that I run across some pretty arrogant SEC fans. Their bandwagon style of fandom sickens me. As someone mentioned before, they have their flavor of the year. Whoever plays for or wins the National title. Granted, they have had the most dominant teams the last few years. I just continue to hope that maybe one day the Irish can silence them, again. I must say, once more, that the most dominant team I have seen in my lifetime has got to be a mid-90s Nebraska team.

One thing I was proud of was the fact that many SEC fans I have talked to always respected Irish fans. They also said Irish fans had the most class. After reading some of this bashing of the southern region in general, I am beginning to see a changing trend.

The south is good for 4 things:

1. The women
2. The food
3. The music
4. College football

They can keep everything else. I have days I wish we had just let them secede. They'd be a third-world country by now.

...but where would I get a decent Cigar?

I agree...some of these posts have been ridiculous and embarrassing. Like I've said...name one region in the country that you couldn't sit here and find something to rip on. I said the same thing when people were ripping on the city of Cleveland...there are plenty of Irish fans who live in the South and love it there; ease up on ripping where they're from.

It SHOULD go without saying that there are really fine people everywhere, and there are a percentage of loud-mouthed jerks everywhere. My father used to say: before you denigrate anyone, do two things...A). try to think of TWO good things about them; and B). take a really good look in the mirror. That was tough advice and almost impossible to follow when I was young and impulsive, but a piece of wisdom nevertheless.

I will also add...I am usually involved in some sort of R&D, and where do I find the people capable of making breakthroughs on almost any topic...Raleigh, NC....just sayin.

OMM, Your father was a hell of a man; it shows.

As for the rest of this thread, all the *******s have outed themselves, imparted their own personal wisdom, so to speak. But for a few pearls, this thread gives off the same smarmy feel that I think some were trying to convince us permeates the south, so since we have proven that ignorance is at home anywhere, can we shut this thread down now?

Yea, the last time ND played the SEC was against LSU and got whooped 41-14, almost to the same extent as Ohio State did in the championship against LSU. Fact remains that ND is still 42-32-5 against the SEC, but if ND really wants a shot at the SEC now, they need to step up the game.

Living as a northerner in the south, I say that the south has great southern hospitality.....until football season anyhow. Lol

Just to stick it to Les Miles, and to shut him up, I hope ND plays LSU, with Gunner Kiel at the helm and shuts em down....just to stick it to the mad hatter

Sad but true! I am an Indiana native, but live in Tennessee now, and let me tell you, there is not much love for our Irish here. ND fans here are laughed at, and told that ND is no longer relevant....dispite the Irish have a 42-32-5 record against the SEC, including a stellar 5-1 record against the Alabama Crimson Tide (Bear Bryant 0-4 against Irish) but yet, we are laughed at, simply because we haven't played anyone big. Laughing at the fact of losing to Navy, the 2007 bowl where LSU won 41-14....

I too was born in Indiana, I now live in Mississippi. I know exactly what you are talking about.
First you must understand a few things:

1: All things are cyclical; ND ran a winning streak on USC, then had the same done to them,
1983 -1995 - Notre Dame's "Decade of Dominance"
2002-2011 - USC's Dominance

2. As far as the SEC goes: The South can be very unforgiving, there are still people in the south that are angry about the outcome of the Civil War. Bearing that in mind, over the years, no team has pissed in the SEC cheerios more than the Irish. You mentioned Alabama and the Bear. Two of those victories came in bowl games in the South. One in the pride of the SECs coveted Sugar Bowl. Another was a 7-0 Alabama loss in Birmingham. SEC Fans hope that the Irish are irrelevant. They fear the Sleeping Giant.

3. Many SEC fans can't see past their conference. Lately, they have done their share of butt kicking so some of that is understandable. But fan is short for fanatic and the truly fanatical are often ignorant of anything outside of their limited tunnel vision.

4. I believe the proverbial pendulum is about to start swinging the other way.

The bolded is really the thing, though. SEC fans are right when they say that their conference has the best football in the country right now. I resisted admitting that for a long time but at this point I don't see how you can deny it.

I hope this is true.

I would not say ND is a joke in the south, just irrelevant ( otyher than the special treatment we get from the BCS and NBC). Even the beating we took against LSU in the BCS game was just plain pitiful to watch nad everyone was like who is this team LSU is playing and how did they get a BCS birth?

Like others have said, outside of the SEC people do not care about the other conferences because of the SECs recent domination. People here basically care about two other games a year and that is Michigan/OSU and Texas/Oklahoma. The only thing they do is watch their team play, and then they watch other SEC teams play. I would reckon the general SEC fan have little to no working knowledge of other conferences....

Also as an aside and for more persepctive about the views of southerners and ND, the other day on the local sports talk radio, the topic of the day was "if ND joined the ACC, what would y'all think about it?"

The responses were well interesting. These are some of them:
-ND would be at best the 6th to 9th best team in ACC and a 10-12 team in the SEC,
-Dan Devine swore he would never play Clemson again so it would be nice to see the scaredy cat Irish come to Death valley for another *** whoopin,
-Duke would give them a run for their money,
-They could not compare to Clemson, FSU, and Miami, and even Maryland would be a tough game for them... etc..
There literally was not one positive or quality comment that I heard regarding ND.

ND is so irrelevant here that they do not even know that we beat both Wake Forest and Maryland last season, beat Miami in a bowl game the season before, and barely lost to FSU in a bowl game this year.... Arguing with these people is insufferable.

Yeah, I am surounded by this..... and half my family graduated from South Carolina..... and my wife graduated from Georgia......

I have 5 buddys that are ND fans in Little rock Arkansas.. A few jam our Bagpipe band.
They also have a fan club the marches in the St. Patricks parade every yr. The Irish pubs here all go Irish not SEC..
Plus both the coaches for my nephews footbal team are huge ND fans.. Both were ND shirts at practice and told all the boys to watch RUDY to see what dedication was all about...

My car is always decked out in ND even now..
Flag in my front yard, and two of my nephews sport ND gear at school football games etc. in Arkansas. So from my view we are LOVED in SEC country. Buying 7 ND OU tickets in two weeks also.. Go Irish.

I do not try to deny it. Right now you are correct and so are they. To be the best you have to beat the best. The SEC has done so for a few years. So they deserve the bragging rights. We may tire of the SEC because we are surrounded by SEC fans, but I am sure that if any other conference had a streak of 7 NC's in a row they would brag as much as the SEC does now and deservedly so. Imagine if the Irish won 3 in a row, how would we sound to others right now. I do love he Irish and I have for well over 40 years, I have cried in the lean times and talked a lot of crap in the good times. Truthfully, when you love to taunt your friends as much as I do, you have to be willing to take it when the ball is in their court as well. I love the back and forth trash talk, I really do. To me that is part of the package.

I believe the Irish are on the rise though and will be champs again.

They say this is "past" but this is the same conference that still brags about a 1-9 bowl game record against Ohio State. All eyes are on Coach Kelly, and I think he had to completely restart the program last season, and look forward to great things this season. Current indications show ND could be ranked around #6 in the nation....I don't think we will get a national championship this season no....but I do think we could get in a great bowl game, against the SEC....and WIN! Nothing would be better than to get revenge on LSU or go for a 6-1 record against Alabama.

The blind SEC only sees in the south, not South Bend....where the Gold Dome holds a winning record against them. Here is the thing to the SEC blind......believe all you want....call us Dunder Domers, the Hail Mary God Squad.....blah blah....fact is, ND is still relevant, and on a return to our former glory, so let the words NOTRE DAME travel through the south, and spread the word.....the Irish are coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop them!

Plus Ara Parseghian said he would love to see ND win another championship before his time comes to leave the earth, so let's give him one!

Agree on several items, but I can tell you, the UT fans, and Knoxville folks, have some pretty decent love for ND. I moved from Indy in 97 to Atlanta, and simply can't get to many ND games now due to work and proximity. One of my older pals, a UT grad, took me to the last UT/ND game. UT was favored, but ND squeaked one out. I thought I'd be beaten and verbally assaulted. Nope, they were all complimentary, said they loved ND, and want us on their schedule often. Keep in mind that I was hanging with a very large RV contingent of all UT fans. I was so impressed, I adopted UT as my SEC team (can't stand UGA). No where near the love I have for ND, but a great bunch of people, great stadium, and 3 hours from ATL. Over the next year or so, I went to more and more games. I now have season tix alongside my buddy. I make it to 3-5 games a year, hang with the RV crowd, and can tell you everyone puts the ND game on their TVs for me and cheers on the Irish.

Regarding all the rest, just win, and the questions/doubts go away.

I find it amusing that the OP says people in Tennessee laugh at Notre Dame and don't find them relevant...yet the Volunteers are 0-2 against the Irish in the last 10 years. Just sayin'...

Not to derail this at all but i take issue with the supposed
special treatment we get from the BCS and NBC

Just like in modern times the SEC has unfortunately earned an NC berth each year until proven otherwise by their track record, we have earned every bit of respect we get from the BCS, and I'm sure that NBC is making plenty of money on our football games. We earned what we have.

I have visited up there with a Tennessee friend of mine for the past two years and he loves ND. Loves his vols more but he loves and respects ND since he got to see it with his own eyes. In fact, if the Vols keep it up the Irish may supplant his team. At any rate, most people down here are respectful about ND and actually see Kelly taking us in the right direction. The biggest argument I face is "When you guys gonna join a conference?" That is my biggest pet peeve from SEC fans who question my Irish.

the biggest pet peeve I have about the SEC is that so many of their fans seem to believe that if one team from the SEC wins the NC, they ALL win the NC.

All true and let the word go out these folks down here think Notre Dame is a JOKE. It would be nice to see this light a fire under the football program to do something about it. The hate that was developed has now just turned into making fun of the fat kid who says he wants to go out for the football team. They rip Notre Dame on every talk show and any chance they get. Almost like they are afraid of Notre Dame becoming Notre Dame again. Trust me ( I live down here ) the south feels Notre Dame is an irrelevant joke!

I agree with you, but to the people down here, they do think it is special treatment and that it is bullshit. They don't care about ND's storied past or our quest for a return to glory. They don't care about the times during WWII when Army, Navy, and ND were vying for national championships in 6-0 games at Yankee stadium... THey dont care about the Comeback Kid, Golden boy, or Rudy, or the fact that we had at least two of the greatest football coaches in the history of the game (Knute and Ara). Nor do they give a crap about NDs rigid academic standards and personal conduct standards...

My wife and I went to the game at UT in 2001. Great talgating prior to the game. Never had a problem with UT fans at all. Very friendly never said anything bad about ND. We were also at the ND/UT game in South Bend. After the game, the bookstore was packed with UT fans buying up Irish gear.

First you must understand a few things:.

I duck hunted once in Mississippi...people were sweet as pie, but then, they were taking my money...and hell yes I wore an ND hat...what?!...it was green :).

1: All things are cyclical; ND ran a winning streak on USC, then had the same done to them,
1983 -1995 - Notre Dame's "Decade of Dominance"
2002-2011 - USC's Dominance

Amen...the B!tch about cycles is, it is hell on the down turn for Type A personalities...so, I never met an ND fan that wasn't Type A (I exagerate, but not by much). Its real hard on our fan base.

2. As far as the SEC goes: The South can be very unforgiving, there are still people in the south that are angry about the outcome of the Civil War. ...some days I wish I could go back in time... I'd sit down with Lincoln and shake his hand for having the moral compass EVREYONE else seemed to lack...then I'd bitch him out for starting the consolidation of Power in the Fed. But then, how could he know how ignorant the average person was going to be regarding Liberty. I digress...

Yea, Southerners seeth with anger...didn't they start "passive aggressive" . Anyway, the classy ones smile and hug you hoping at that instant they can feel your heart stop beating...thus "bless his heart"...just wishfull thinkin'.

3. Many SEC fans can't see past their conference. Lately, they have done their share of butt kicking so some of that is understandable. But fan is short for fanatic and the truly fanatical are often ignorant of anything outside of their limited tunnel vision.

Amen to that...

4. I believe the proverbial pendulum is about to start swinging the other way.

I think the SEC has upped their game such that they have retarded the normal pendulum swing...ESPN and the NCAA are complicit...I think the SEC will have another decade of dominance before others catch them...the problem is it is a race to the bottom for academics and recruiting...In that sense, I hope it takes longer for others to decay...

good topic...good discussion...sorry for the novel, but what else is there to discuss...

Funny, I used to think people were still fighting the civil war here...until I moved here 18 years ago. I don't know anyone still fighting it. And I have known southerners to be every bit as hospitable as they are rumored to be.

Of course everyone has their rednecks morons that make a bad name for the rest of us, but to be honest I lived around Philly for 26 years and went to College in the Poconos near Berwick, PA, and that area of the world was far more ignorant and racist than any area of the south I have lived (thankfully).
