The main thing that I pulled away from it was that he thinks strength of schedule should play a heavy hand in selection. He mentioned ND's schedule.

Then of course they talked about the opener in Dublin and the adjustments that need to be made...and he was asked who the QB would be...skated around that one.

Coach said he was in favor of a playoff system. He thinks strength of schedule will help ND in the future and should be considered for the new format. He also talked about the team going to play Navy in Ireland, he wants the team to get acclimated a couple of days before the game. He hasnt named a starting qb but he says he has 4 good qbs. There will be a competition in August.

The guys above me summed it up well. But one thing I thought, and Im probably reading too much into it. Kelly said we have FOUR QB's vying for the starting job. Of course he may just being "politically correct" as we have 4 scholarship QB's, but I find him including Kiel in that group interesting as I think (maybe Im wrong) that he had said it was between 3 QB's earlier in the spring/summer. Maybe Kiel is working his way up?

Of course 99% sure Im wrong here. Just wanted to throw this out there.

A lot of folks around here have completely written Kiel off. It's a popular belief that has blind allegiance on the board.

But as we all know.... I have never doubted the young man... :awesomewo

Wooly you don't even like Kiel as a QB. I though Tommy was was your guy.

i agree wooly. even with the loss of MF, if we are or think to be strong on the trenches and able bodied in the back field--with an all american and preseason macky list guy in Eifert--Gunner can and could "survive" and maybe even produce. i think TD/INT ratio could be about equal, but understandable.

our best chance at making a run at the NC is not this year. it's next year. its set up much like last year was, but we'll be even more amazing (talent-wise) on defense. they have to be thinking about game experience for everyone but TR at this point. especially for beyond this year.

clausen almost didnt live through '07 as a starter because of bad o-line play. armando had limited experience at that point. Grimes being the only receiver with any true experience. Jimmy didnt have everything on his ball because of off season surgery. and game planning of most the summer went into running spread with demetrius. not pro style with jimmy. Gunner would suffer, at this point, none of these.

I really think "Gunner" can be interchanged with "EG", and same arguments can be made. i was pulling for hendrix for the longest time. i really fell in love with EG in the spring game. but, i think if they want to run and Gun this year, they could.

The loss of Mike Floyd is addition by subtraction and this is not to say Mike Floyd is not wanted because I want him back on this team 100 out of 100 times. What I mean is, it forces the 4 QB's to use there check downs and not just focus on him. Rees forced the ball to him one too many times while I am staring at the TV looking at TJ Jones getting separation on a defender or standing there, arms up, wide open. I believe having a security blank like Floyd is dangerous to a developing QB. I believe the offense to be more well-rounded this year.

I think there is something to be said for this argument--since you are clearly not saying you'd rather not have Floyd--insofar as Hendrix or Rees are the QB. But Golson seems very used to scrambling around, buying time, and looking all over for recievers. I don't think he needs to learn that skill, and Floyd would have been quite a weapon to have for another year.

Didn't it seem like Crist almost did the opposite? He was so intent on checking down that he would overlook Floyd way too often? Seemed like his safety blanket was Rudy, but only on 3rd downs.

I would love Floyd back 1000 times over, his catch in the Bowl Game summed up his career and it was a spectacular one from start to finish. Sad that Golden Tate parted when he did. Regardless, with Eifert being the new de facto #1, I see the receptions being sent all over the place. When was the last time we had a slot WR in the mold of Neal? (Not a knock on Toma) Add Eifert (TE U), TJ Jones, Keivare, Daniels, and even Goody (who I think is better then some give him credit for). Add in Cierre, then Amir to the backfield with George, Mahone, and the talent level of Kiel/Golson/Hendrix and to some extent, Rees, I think we will see an improvement all-around on offense.

For the first time, in a long time, we have breakaway players at multiple skill positions. Maybe not SEC-esque or Oregon but another step forward.

I also think the defense will be a step above last year as well. Injuries hurt but the talent level on defense is there and I believe the depth will show. I'm not calling for a BCS title but I think this team is better then what a lot give credit for.

Kiel is going to be redshirted... he isnt ready for 2012, but his talent is there by the buttloads... I think it is more of a two man race between Hendrix and Golson than anything else. Kelly was just being nice and not letting anything slip out. Just imagine the conversation with the ESPN host if he said anything but 4 QBs...

"Breaking News: Notre Dame has eliminated so-so from the QB competition, what does it all mean?"
CFB: "We have a special today, Kelly has eliminated a QB from contention of the starting job, what does it all mean?"

Two things. First, Notre Dame is irrelevant. Second, the Mothership has the journalistic integrity and chops of TMZ.
