It wasn’t meant to be serious. I was taking a page from a Red Sox lurker

CC has been on the DL ever since that start as I'm sure you are aware. He had no business pitching that game. Glad he did though because we've only won one game since...not that it matters much anymore.

He's been burying Sale, hence my reply. When you look at his and Rodriquez stats together they're real close except for the 1/2 run ERA difference. I suspect BoSox run production is better for Rodriquez, defense has been a little tighter and, the bullpen may have done better for him than Sale.

Sale's ERA is too high for someone who just received a 5 year extension to the tune of $145 million. Rodriguez is a FA after this year, so he'll surely get his, but it certainly won't be that much money. This year he's only on the books for $4 million and the Sox are going to have to work hard to resign him.

Sale is supposed to be, or is at least paid like, one of the best starting pitchers in the league...a true ace like Verlander or Scherzer. In reality, he's been far from that ever since last year's All Star break.

That's no argument that Sale isn't the pitcher he was a year ago. And yes, he's making a lot more $$$.

My point is relative on that team. Despite Sales's ERA rise, his 11 loses get booed while while Rodriguez is praised as the "ACE" with 13 wins, yet when you look at comparative stats of those two, innings, ERA, ER, hits, HRs, BB, K, WHP, etc they're close. Sale had the best WHIP by a sizeable margin on the team. Sale's 5-11 with WHIP 1.14, Rodriguez 13-5, 1.32, Price 7-5, 1.32, Porcello 10-8, 1.44

I have look at some games but NOT each game in detail for each pitcher, (I don't do that for the team I follow) BUT I suspect offense, defense, and bullpen have been more beneficial to Rodriguez than Sale and that without the difference in support.

I'll submit Rodriguez is a few games over where he should be and Sale is a few games below where he is. Both should be (this season) more like Price and Porcell, 7-5, .580 to 10-8 .550 with equitable support.

Still wouldn't make Sale the ace this year BUT IF HE WAS 8 wins better at 13-5 the team IS still 7.5 games out, 7 down in the Loss Column. Sale could do it alone even with superlative support.

Boston like NY has injuries and misplays like NY's Clint Frazier but NY's scrubs have filled the shoes of the regulars and Tauchman out homering and RBIing Judge, among others, for example.

Sale is the poster boy for a down year for the World Champions.

Scrubs Win Another

Scrubs Win Another

9-4 in an opener game. Cortes gets the win in the middle.

Bottom of the order once again outshines the meat of the order, more EXB hits, more RBIs, more Runs scored.

Romaine hitting like Sanchez (albeit injured) hasn't. Career "year".

Who is Trauchman? Another multihit game, HR and 2B, 2nd highest Slugging Average on Team.

More RBIs than Judge in about 35 fewer ABs and he's hitting in the 9th slot.

Rays keep pace winning in Extra Innings.

Per NY Post

Aroldis Chapman’s 30th save in 35 chances on Monday night gave the left-handed closer a seventh season of 30 or more saves. He is the 17th pitcher since 1969 to save 30 in seven seasons. Craig Kimbrel and Chapman are the only active pitchers to do it.

The Yankees won their 14th straight games at Camden Yards. It is the longest road winning streak at any single opponent in franchise history.

It also was the Bombers’ 11th straight victory against the Orioles, and their six homers upped their total to 38 this season at Camden Yards. That is the major league record for most home runs at a visiting ballpark

Voit will test hernia with bat and balls drill before decision is mad.

Plan B is Encarcion IF back from broken wrist.

Then Ford.

LeMahieu would be more likely except for various injuries to Didi, Torres, and Urshela. Time will tell.

P.S. See Torres injury article in next post.

In the last five games the No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters are batting .373 (22-for-59) with four homers and 10 RBIs.

Stephen Tarpley was sent to SWB after giving up two runs and six hits in two innings.

Torres Undergoes Testing

Yankees' Gleyber Torres was removed from game because of 'core' issue again

The Yankees remain in first place and also the most banged up team in the league. The latest victim is All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, who left Tuesday night's win in the third inning because of a "core" injury, via yankees.com. According to the team, Torres had tests in a hospital on Sunday and nothing came back negative.

Still, apparently the issue persisted, because Torres is headed back to New York for more tests (via Lindsey Adler of The Athletic).

This seems a bit troubling, no? Torres just went 0 for 7 since his initial tests against a pretty bad pitching staff. The Yankees already have a small village on the injured list and the hunch here is Torres joins it.

Torres, 22, is hitting .281/.347/.505 with 23 homers, 62 RBI and 70 runs this season. The two-time All-Star is in his second season.

If Torres does miss time, the Yankees can roll with DJ LeMahieu at second, Gio Urshela at third and Mike Ford at first.

The Yankees are 74-39 and remain in first place in the AL East by nine games. It's pretty scary how good they've been in spite of all these injuries and they just keep happening.

Yankees, White Sox to play MLB game at 'Field of Dreams' cornfield during 2020 regular season
The field is located in Dyersville, Iowa
R.J. Anderson CBSSports.com 2 hrs ago

In the 1980s, Kevin Costner starred in one of the best baseball films of all-time -- the rare Hollywood product to emanate pure baseball energy. That movie, of course, was "Bull Durham." A year later, Costner returned to the diamond in "Field of Dreams." "Dreams," for those unaware, tells the classic tale of a corn farmer and his family hosting dozens of spirits after he inadvertently opens an interdimensional portal that connects our world with the spectral plane.

Baseball is nothing without its ghosts, and so it should come as surprise to no one that MLB intends to play a regular season next season on the field on which Dreams was played on. Here are some more details, courtesy of Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci:

Under a backdrop of corn as high as an elephant's eye, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play a regular season game Aug. 13 next season on the diamond in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie "Field of Dreams" was shot in 1988, multiple sources told SI. The game will be broadcast by Fox.

The brands have confirmed as much on Twitter:

Here's part of MLB's official release on the matter:

FOX will provide exclusive national coverage of "MLB at Field of Dreams," airing at 7:00 p.m. (ET)/6:00 p.m. (CT). The event will be considered a White Sox home date, with the Thursday game followed by a Friday off-day before the two Clubs resume their three-game series at Chicago's Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday. Information on the limited ticket availability will be announced by MLB in the months ahead. "MLB at Field of Dreams" will be presented by GEICO and be a part of the GEICO Summer Series. Later this month, MLB will begin construction on a temporary 8,000-seat ballpark on the Dyersville site. A pathway through a cornfield will take fans to the ballpark, which will overlook the famous movie location. The right field wall will include windows to show the cornfields beyond the ballpark. Aspects of the ballpark's design will pay homage to Chicago's Comiskey Park, home of the White Sox from 1910-1990, including the shape of the outfield and bullpens beyond the center field fence.

Per Verducci's report, MLB intends to begin construction on an 8,000-seat ballpark at the site later this month. The plan is to keep the cornfield as the backdrop. Here's a look at some rendered art:

Under Rob Manfred's watch, MLB has pursued a number of special locations for games, ranging from foreign countries (London, Japan, Australia) to Fort Bragg, Williamsport, and now, apparently, Dyersville, Iowa. If you leverage your local government into building it, they will come -- unless they have the chance to play a one-off at a cornfield, anyway.

With a pair of 2 run HRs in his first 2 ABs tonight Urshela has moved into 3rd place among team RBI leaders with 59.

Urshela leads the regulars and regular subs in Slugging.

Higashioka actually is the leader with 7 EB hits, 3 HR, 4 2B, out of 10 hits in 39 ABs.

Yankees bash Blue Jays — and set another homer record
By George A. King III August 8, 2019 | 10:27pm | Updated

TORONTO — On Opening Day, every Yankees employee would have been elated if told that in the second week of August, their club would be running away with the AL East.

Would any reasonable mind, however, have believed Gio Urshela and Mike Tauchman would be driving the train?

Urshela started the season at Triple-A and Tauchman played sparingly and not well with the varsity in April and half of May before being sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Urshela replaced an injured Miguel Andujar at third and Tauchman returned in the middle of June. And lately the duo has been a major reason the Yankees have the best record in the AL.

“They have been impact players for us and do it on both sides of the ball,’’ Aaron Boone said of his accidental stars. “It has come in a lot of big situations. I don’t know how many more ways we can describe it.’’

Thursday night’s 12-6 beating of the Blue Jays in front of 34,108 at Rogers Centre was fueled by Urshela’s 3-for-5, two-homer, four-RBI evening and Tauchman’s 2-for-5, one-homer, four-RBI performance.

The victory extended the Yankees’ longest winning streak of the season to nine and improved their AL East lead over the idle Rays to 10 ½ lengths.

“I think on offense we are kind of in a zone lately. Look at the production we are putting up,’’ said Tauchman, who hit a two-run homer in the third inning, when the Yankees scored six runs.

The Yankees have slugged 19 homers in four games — a major league record — so people in the seats might want to think about donning hard hats while sitting in that danger zone.

And that is with Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Gary Sanchez, Luke Voit and Edwin Encarnacion on the injured list. Not one of those 19 homers was hit by Aaron Judge.

“Trying to hit the ball in the zone and hit with power,’’ said Urshela who also homered twice Wednesday night in Baltimore and is the seventh player in Yankees history to hit five homers in three games. The most recent had been Alex Rodriguez in 2007.

The hitting clinic appeared to have delivered enough runs after three innings, when the Yankees held an 8-0 lead. But Domingo German (15-2) gave up four runs in the fifth, when he almost didn’t survive the inning, but got through it and qualified for the victory.

“I think his stuff overall was a little down,’’ Boone said of German, who tied Astros right-hander Justin Verlander for the major league lead in victories despite allowing four runs (three earned) and eight hits. “A little flat.’’

DJ LeMahieu (3-for-5) drove in two runs in the sixth for a 10-4 lead and after the Blue Jays had scored a run against Chad Green. Luis Cessa gave up one run in the final three innings to post his first save of season. To make sure the Blue Jays didn’t come back, Tauchman delivered a two-run, two-out single in the ninth.

Tauchman was imported from the Rockies in the final hours of spring training to provide cover for the outfield when Hicks started the season on the injured list. Urshela’s reputation with the Indians and Blue Jays was as an exceptional fielding third baseman who couldn’t hit enough to hold a steady job at a position that requires a productive bat.

Now, both are major forces as the Yankees have made a joke out of the AL East.

Anybody who says they saw that coming is a liar.

Indeed they are.

Four of the Top 6 Pitchers in ERA. Top Yankee at #18 slot, German with 4.08 ERA.

He doesn't have enough innings to qualify for ERA listing yet is a major league leader in wins but he's won 15 of the 19 starts he's made losing 2.

How Yankees pulled off Joe Mantiply trade a week after deadline
By Ethan Sears August 9, 2019 | 12:25pm

So much for the all-encompassing trade deadline.

A full nine days after July 31, the Yankees announced a deal to acquire left-hander Joe Mantiply from the Reds for cash. This year was the first under a new rule where the July 31 deadline applied to all deals — not just non-waiver trades, as had been previously the case. Or so we thought.

It turns out that the Yankees took advantage of a loophole allowing minor leaguers to be traded after the deadline. Rule 9(b)(3):

“No Major League Uniform Player’s Contract (including for outrighted players) shall be traded to another Major League Club during the period commencing 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 31 (the ‘Major League Trade Deadline’) and ending upon the day that the last game of the World Series starts.”

Wading through the legalese: The trade deadline doesn’t apply to deals that exclusively include minor leaguers, though it does include players on MLB contracts who aren’t on 40-man rosters.

The 28-year-old pitched for the Yankees organization at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2017 after a brief time in the majors with Detroit the previous season. Mantiply has split his time this season between Cincinnati’s Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. In total, he has a 4.15 ERA over 30 1/3 innings with 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

So, yes, the trade is legal. But, no, Joe Mantiply probably isn’t a name you need to pay attention to this year.

Slip-sliding away ...

15 games down in the Loss Column

9 out of 10.

All that said, still only chasing 5 with a month and a half to go. I wouldn't take a deep breath quite yet. If Sale can keep his 97 underneath armpits like he did last night for 7+, then I think we might have a chance. The schedule sets up favorable especially compared to Oakland's.

We shall see.....

Threw 94 pitches through 8+, allowing 3 hits, no BBs, 4 Ks. Averaged less than 12 pitches/inning

Tanaka gave up a leadoff single in the 9th and was replaced by Chapman who got a double play to erase the runner. Then Chapman gave up a single putting the tying run on base before striking out Biggio to end the game.

Back to back doubles by Urshela and Gardner to open the 5th were the only offense of the game.

Bargain Night for NY as they sweep twinbill.

Mantiply purchased from the Reds for $1 gets his first major league win with a 3 inning stint in an "opener" ... then is sent down.

Liall after 8 years in the minors pitches 2.2 innings then is sent back down.

Urshela purchased a year ago for a buck had 3 hits.

LeMahieu had 3 hits.

Sophomore Gleyber Torres had 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in the second game. Torres 13 HRs trails Lou Gehrig by 1 for Most HRs By A Yankee In A Season Against One Team.

Gardner hit a bases loaded triple in the first. Batting .351 with the bases loaded in his career with 101 bases loaded RBIs.

Yanks 8-2 in last 10 games as are the Rays who won't go away.

German goes for #16 and the Broom Monday against the O's.
