Judge out here setting records... 8 K's is the most ever for a player in a double header. Striking out 5 times in the second game.

Problem with Stanton and Judge, they will give you all or nothing which could be frustrating in the playoffs...

Cashman dialing for pitchers

Cashman dialing for pitchers

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/yankees-lose-jordan-montgomery-to-tommy-john-surgery-increasing-their-need-to-go-get-rotation-help/

The New York Yankees have lost one of their promising young pitchers to Tommy John surgery.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Yankees announced sophomore southpaw Jordan Montgomery will under reconstructive elbow surgery this Thursday. Montgomery suffered a flexor strain last month and attempted to rehab the injury. Given the typical Tommy John surgery rehab timetable, he will likely be sidelined until next year's All-Star break.

Great outing by Gray, 8 innings, no runs, 2 hits, 8Ks. Took 0.7 off his ERA.

Bullpen continued the shutout.

Judge 2 run HR in 13th was game winner.

This team still has another level it can hit. Stanton looks like he’s coming around but Sanchez is hovering around the Mendoza line, Bird is inconsistent, Judge and Didi both have been slumping and they are still winning.

Tonight CBSSports Nick Kostos and Jim Bowden discussed possible Cashman promotions/trades to replace Montgomery (and the #3,4,5 starters) for the next 2 years until Montgomery is back from Tommy John surgery.

Bowden noted NY's top 3 pitching prospects are Sheffield, Swanson, and Adams.

Note: Of NY's Top 30 Minor League Prospects, 22 of them are pitchers.

Trades: Bowden's Possible List

Cole Hamey Tex 3-5 W-L, 3.63 ERA 1.25 Whip
Michael Fulmer Det 2-5, 4.73, 1.87
J.A. Happ Tor 7-3, 4.08, 1.13
Tyson Ross S.D. 5-3, 3.31, 1.22
Ervin Santana Cin Disabled List
Danay Duff KC 2-6, 5.81, 1.61
Marco Estrada Tor 2-7 5.68, 1.47

Bowden noted NY has been pursuing Happ for 2 years.

Trades: Bowden's Dream List

Jacob DeGrom Mets 4-0, 72.1 IP, 1.49, 1.04
Noah Syndergaard Mets 4-1, 64.2, 3.06, 1.18
Blake Snell TB 7-3, 76.1, 2.36, 0.94
Chris Archer TB 3-4, 76.1, 4.24, 1.34

Bowden noted Mets owner probably would not let GM trade either pitcher crosstown even though Mets are dying for young talent. They have an old roster and little help from their farm system.

He thought Snell is the best prospect and young but TB has said "untradeable" but they and Toronto both need an infusion of talent and Yankees farm system has talent to spare.

Noah Syndergaard scratched from his start due to strained ligament in finger
It's another bit of bad news for the struggling Mets
Dayn Perry

The Mets had hoped that the strained ligament in right-hander Noah Syndergaard's index finger would be healed enough for him to come off the disabled list and start Sunday against the Yankees. Regarding that, there's bad news ...

James Wagner

@ByJamesWagner
Noah Syndergaard will not start on Sunday, per MC. His finger was swollen after playing catch. He’ll rest more and try again Monday. Seth Lugo to start instead.
3:01 PM - Jun 8, 2018

It doesn't sound like a serious setback, but any setback at all is a source of concern, especially when discussing a gifted yet often-injured pitcher like Syndergaard.

This season, the 25-year-old fireballer has pitched to a 3.10 ERA and 5.85 K/BB ratio in 64 2/3 innings. Syndergaard's rate-based results have always been excellent, but he's coming off a 2017 season in which he was limited to just seven starts because of injury. It's certainly not panic time with regard to "Thor," but it's another bit of bad news for a Mets team that's gone 16-31 since their hot start to the season.

Great game by Tanaka! Gave up a leadoff HR, then whiffed 8 of the next 15 batters, walking one.

M. Tanaka 5.0 IP, ER, BB, 8 SO, 75 P

J. deGrom pitched a great game as well but the NY bullpen was better than his.

8.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO, 101 P

NY 4 Mets 1

In Boston Sale whiffed 10 but gave up the games only run as Covey and Bullpen shutout the Red Sox 1-0

Tanaka got hurt running the bases which sucks. Been waiting for MLB to make the DH across both leagues.

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has been dealing the past couple weeks with a tendinitis issue in his left knee. It flared up in the ninth tonight, prompting trainers to come out and check on him. Since he's been able to pitch through it, he doesn't think it'll send him to the DL

Tanaka on DL

Tanaka on DL

Yankees rotation takes another blow as Masahiro Tanaka is placed on the DL with both hamstrings injured
The Yankees will have to dig deep for rotation help with another injury testing their depth
Dayn Perry 3m ago

The Yankees on Saturday placed right-hander Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list with mild strains in both hamstrings. Tanaka was forced to leave Friday night's eventual win over the Mets at Citi Field after running the bases in the sixth inning. He's been replaced on the active roster by infielder Ronald Torreyes, who was recalled from Triple-A.

This season, the 29-year-old Tanaka has pitched to a 4.58 ERA and 3.84 K/BB ratio in 72 2/3 innings. While hamstring injuries can sometimes be slow to heal, the club did characterize both injuries as being mild. As such, there's likely hope that Tanaka can come off the DL when first eligible.

Tanaka's injury comes mere days after the Yankees learned Jordan Montgomery would require Tommy John surgery.

GM Brian Cashman was likely already determined to land a starter prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and Tanaka's injury may have hastened his efforts. While the non-waiver deadline is still several weeks away, veteran lefty Cole Hamels of the Rangers is already a hotly rumored target for teams in need of pitching.

Rangers' Cole Hamels: Throws 7.1 innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Hamels (3-6) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five across 7.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Astros.

Hamels was burnt by the longball once again as three of his five runs came on the two home runs he allowed in the start. He has now surrendered two home runs in four consecutive starts, pushing his HR/9 to 1.9 for the season. Positively, he continued to show his renewed ability to miss bats by generating 13 swinging strikes against one of the better lineups in the American League. Despite the homer problems, his ratio stats are respectable for the season as he has a 3.86 ERA paired with a 1.24 WHIP.

Yankees GM says they are 'always open to outside help' following Masahiro Tanaka's injury
Tanaka went down with 'mild' strains of both hamstrings Friday
Mike Axisa 5 hours ago CBSSports

Cashman told reporters he is open to making a trade, but is more likely to stick with internal options. From Dan Martin of the New York Post:

"We're always open to outside help, no matter what time of year it happens to be,'' Cashman said. "But we also have internal options we can rely on. … It's always important to have depth, no doubt about that.''

Cashman and the Yankees did not name names when it came to their "internal options," though prospects Justus Sheffield and Chance Adams are in Triple-A, and fast-riser Jonathan Loaisiga is sitting in Double-A. The Yankees were reportedly ready to call up Loaisiga, who has a 2.30 ERA and a 54/4 K/BB in 43 innings this season, to start a doubleheader last week before a rainout changed their pitching plans.

As for the trade market, the top names on the market are Texas Rangers lefty Cole Hamels and San Diego Padres righty Tyson Ross. Now that the amateur draft is over though, teams will now shift into trade deadline mode, and more non-contenders will get serious about making their players available. Others like Chris Archer and Michael Fulmer could become viable trade targets in the coming weeks.

For now, the Yankees say they will replace Tanaka internally, which is exactly what they did when Montgomery went down. Montgomery got hurt and German stepped into the rotation. The Yankees have a robust farm system and they've solved a lot of problems internally in recent years. There's no reason to think they'll behave differently this time around.

CC was solid last night 3 hits, 0 runs in 5.2 innings and got solid support from the bullpen throwing a team shutout against the Nats, 3-0.

Tonight Gray had a typical Gray outing 5 inning 4 runs, 3 coming off a 3 run HR by 19 year old rookie Juan Soto. Soto hit a game winning HR off Shreve for the loss. Soto's 2nd HR was 436 feet.

Sox won over the O's. NY holds First Place by .002.

In 6 starts this year he was 0-4. Last time out he struck out 9. Tonight he whiffed 10 Rays in 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and a pair of walks. He's a work in progress.

Hicks HR, Gleyber 3 run HR.
