Will Yeatman

Will Yeatman has been in a bit of a groove as of late. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end prospect out of San Diego (Calif.) Rancho Bernardo continues to see his recruiting stock go up each week. He has also helped his team start the season with an impressive 6-0 record. Despite all of the successes this season, Yeatman continues to take things in stride.

Will Yeatman appears to have a leader.
"Things are going really well," Yeatman said. "We're the No. 1 ranked team in San Diego (Calif.) right now which is pretty cool. We won are first league game last week 50-7."

"I think I'm up to around 20 offers. I know Colorado, Nebraska, Michigan, Oregon State, San Diego State, Arizona State, Arizona, Washington, Maryland, Duke, North Carolina, Boston College, Notre Dame, UTEP, Nevada and a few others have already offered. Most everybody recruiting me says they like me at tight end."

As a tight end for Rancho Bernardo, Yeatman has already grabbed 18 passes for 283-yards and six touchdowns this season. As a part-time player at defensive end, he's added an interception, a sack, and over 20 tackles.

"A lot of schools comment on my big hands," Yeatman said, "and my ability to catch the football. When I was at Nebraska, they measured my hand a 12 1/4 inches, which I guess is pretty big."

Yeatman has already taken two official visits this Fall and he has his eyes on a possible third.

"I visited both Notre Dame and Nebraska back in September," Yeatman said. "I don't have any other visits set yet but I may take a visit to Maryland. Other than that, I'm not sure."

Yeatman said his visits to both Nebraska and Notre Dame brought out a number of positives.

"At Notre Dame, the tradition of the school really stood out," Yeatman said. "The people stand out too. It seemed like I got a long really well with the average student at the school and not just the athletes. I also really like coach (Charlie) Weis. He's a very confident guy who I think is really moving that program in the right direction."

"At Nebraska, I really liked the game itself. Walking into a stadium with fans screaming off their heads for the recruits was really cool. The game went into double overtime and Nebraska came out on top which was also pretty neat. Coach (Bill) Busch is recruiting me and he's a really great guy. When we talk, we don't talk about football much which is really neat. We just get to know each other better."

Yeatman was asked to discuss any potential negatives at each school. The blue-chip tight end commented as follows:

"Notre Dame didn't have any negatives to be really honest with you," Yeatman said. "At Nebraska, the campus wasn't as great as I would have liked but the coaching staff was awesome and I really got a long great with guys on the team as well."

Yeatman, who has also visited both Duke and North Carolina unofficially, admitted that he holds one school in the lead for his signature to a letter of intent in February.

"Notre Dame is probably my leader right now," Yeatman said. "Nebraska is still up there too. The fact that Notre Dame has a lacrosse program certainly helps them out but they also have an all-around great football program."

"I hope to take a few more visits before making any kind of decision. I was shooting to make a decision sometime in November but I also kind of want to take more visits, so we'll see."

Domer to the west, are they projecting him at tight end or offensive tackle? I've seen both.

Notre Dame is recruiting him as a TE. If ND lands Konrad Reuland, Will Yeatman, in addition to Paddy Mullen, we would have the best TE class in the country hands down.

while good TE's are wonderful to have i highly doubt that if we get the 3 of them that they all will stay TE's.

If we land Yeatman and Reuland, Mullen will be a DE. But who knows, you can never have too many tight ends. Plus Yeatman can play OL. He is being recruited by many schools at OL so he could play that at ND.

I didn't think ND lacrosse gave full rides but rather split scholarships to spread them around. Are there full lacrosse scholarships at ND?

BGIF, if Charlie wants a LaCrosse scholarship, there will be a LaCrosse scholarship. End of story. HE's one of the best LaCrosse players in the county, of course there would be a schollie waiting for him.

Weis likes the tight end. Fasano and Carlson aren't too shabby of a combo. If Hiben pans out and they land Reuland, what are the two biggest areas of need for ND?

Could Yeatman be turned to tackle and Mullen to DE?

Yes, there are full schollies for ALL sports now, both W and M. That's one of the good things that Kevin White has done and you can see the results as nearly all, if not all of the fall sports teams are ranked and most are top 10 or 15. Heck, even the golf team is having a great year w/ 3 players ranked in the top #100 in the country.

And this is ND not FSU. Awarding a full scholarship in a sport that issued partials would be inviting an NCAA investigation.

Domer95's explanation of full funding makes this plausible. I recall White was expanding scholarships in other sports but didn't realize it was across the board.

Looking good!

Yeah, I'm with BGIF on this one. Admissions is going to give Weis some wiggle room with early enrollment, but Notre Dame is Notre Dame. They're not going to sacrafice what they stand for on the academic side of things. I hope they wouldn't, anyway. It would make them just like everyone else.

It is my understanding the ND now offers the maximum number of scholies allowed by the NCAA in all varsity sports. This was their response to Title IX.

See what I mean? Notre Dame actually COMPLIES to Title IX.

Not many schools actually do.

Ah, Title IX....where wrestling teams go to die.

TELL ME ABOUT IT!! I lived in Grace (good riddance!!) in section with 4 wrestlers (two heavyweights), when the news came down that the Wrestling team was going to be terminated. They threw one hell of a closing party.

Here's the skinny on Yeatman per BGI (print).

Yeatman says he can't imagine a Spring without lacrosse. He knows the day may come when lacrosse must give way to football as he's 6-6 255 and growing. "I'd like to play both at the collegiate level for at least a year." He's been offered a lacrosse scholarship. He would play that sport first, ala Walton, but can practice with the football team but can not play in games. He thinks as a 255#TE he can play both but realizes that adding weight would effectively end his lacrosse career. He noted that at 280# lacrosse would be over. He's visited Nebraska and will visit Maryland, others of interest are ASU, UM, and UNC. ND, UMD, and UNC top his list.

Irish recruiters have pointed out Samardzija's two sport career and the ND football players Chad DeBolt and Mike Brennan also played lacrosse.

Yeatman would not count against the 25 max class limit but if he does play football he'd count against the 85 max. He'd have 5 years to play 4 so in essence his freshman year would be a redshirt (if ND redshirted).

In 5 years Will Yeatman could letter at ND in two sports and hold 2 degrees. It's his decision.

I went to grad school with a wrestler from Purdue. What a great guy.

After him, I've never met a single one that didn't play a few jacks short of a full deck.
