More proof that Weis is always innovative with his recruiting ideas:

Last week Will Yeatman picked up an offer from Notre Dame to play lacrosse.
Yeatman is a two-time all-league performer as an OT his sophomore year and tight end as a junior. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end from San Diego, Calif., is regarded as one of the top lacrosse players in the country. He also hails as a top pass catching tight end. That versatility caught the eye of the Notre Dame football coaching staff as the Irish extended a very unconventional offer to Yeatman just last week. Yeatman's unique scholarship would position him to play lacrosse as a scholarship player upon enrolling at Notre Dame while still working with the football team, although he would not play in any games in 2006. After his freshman season, Yeatman would then receive a full scholarship to play football allowing him a full four years of eligibility. As a junior, Yeatman caught more than 25 passes and averaged 12.5 yards per catch. He scored four times. His size and pass-catching ability earned him more than 20 scholarship offers to play football in college. Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona State, Maryland, Oregon State, Arizona, San Diego State, Boston College, North Carolina and Duke are several of the schools that have extended offers.

i'm confused. he sounds like a good recruit, but why how does this benefit the football program if he plays lacrosse his first year at ND and then still has 4 years of eligibility with the football team? is it simply a matter of being flexible because he wants to play lacrosse?

NCAA has a max of 25 recruits per year. IF he came to ND on a Lacrosse scholarship and plays that sport before playing football, he would not be counted against the 25 in the current recruiting class. Walton came in on soccer scholarship, played soccer, and then played football. Yeatman also would not count against the 85 until he played.

If Aldridge came in via early admission and Yeatman came in for Lacrosse, ND could bring in 27 but those two would not count against the Class of '10 maximum of 25.

Years ago, coaches gave football players track, basketball, baseball, golf, or whatever was available scholarships in addition to the maximum number of football scholarships. The NCAA closed that loophole by requiring the athlete to play in that sport before playing football.

If you look back though his profile*, you'll see I had him moving to OT before he came on campus. And every Spring I took up the campaign again.

I had him pegged as a Andy Heck clone. Both the build. the lax feet and the lax stamina screamed, "Move him to OT!"

I keep hoping he would add pounds and outgrow (girth) TE and Lax. Instead he loved Lax too much and keep his weight down.

Hope it works out for him!

*Don't bother looking. There used to be a lot more posts. I guess it got "sanitized" either from the mod that went beserk one night ('07) and deleted thousands of posts or after the eruptions over Res Life and his departure.

Yeatman was over in Dublin last January and attended my team's Superbowl Party. Good guy and promised to send us over a load of Dolphins gear but never did despite all the pints we bought him!
