Wide Receivers?

We've heard endless speculation about the quarterback position, but the position that I have the most concern about next year is wide receiver. I know we'll likely be running alot, but with the quality of competition we'll be playing early in the year, we need some dependable receivers to keep defenses honest.

I know almost nothing about the receivers that we have. My best guess at a starting three based on what I've read would be:

Grimes (only WR with experience)
Hord (beat out Grimes last year before injury)
Ragone (not strong enough to beat out the other tight ends as a blocker, but too fast, talented and tall to keep on the bench)

Where does eveyone keep getting this from? I don't think anything was final at all at the end of spring ball, but David Grimes seemed to be the #3 going into the summer. I have no doubt Hord will be a good receiver, but an awful lot of people seem to be writing off Grimes.

Also, I doubt Ragone will be #3 receiver, at least not right off the bat. there are too many talented true receivers for that to happen.

All things considered, I was pretty excited at teh way Grimes played last year, so if it is Grimes and Hord as the top two, I'm sure the Irish will be in good shape. And with Carlson, Reuland and Yeatman all at tight end, I would be pretty surprised to see Ragone getting a lot of time this year. But if he is talented enough and earns it, then more power to him.

Don't be surprised if Robbie Parris logs a lot of time this upcoming year. It's been whispered that he's got the best hands of the bunch of receivers. Can't hurt that he's also 6-5 with some giddy-up.

Not that it means a lot this early, but the 2-deep listed right now has Grimes & Hord at WR. Grimes has a ways to go before he is a prototypical #1 WR. Weis has been talking to Grimes about other successful undersized WRs like Chrebet, Troy Brown & Terry Glenn. Competition will undoubtedly lead to improved performance...at least it better.

What happened to Jackson, the kid from Florida. He was recruited because he had great hand and was quick. He had a reputation as being a tenacious wide-out.

Of all the recievers on the roster, I believe that Grimes and West have the only meaningful PT. Hord didn't line up at reciever his Freshman year and returned like 2 kickoffs. Bragg is out of the question. So that leaves Gallup, Parris, Jackson, Kamara, and maybe someone else. I see Grimes and either Jackson or Parris getting the other starting spot with West lined up in the slot.

Kamara may be in the mix, but one would think if he doesn't make a big splash in the early fall, why play him this year. Better to let him learn, rather than burn up his eligibility.

Hord actually did line up at wide out a few times although with no catches. I know he played on offense vs. BYU and Standford and maybe a few other games. and he was on the field for kick returns from BYU onwards although he only actually got the ball a few times. so he has more experience than it may seem. but the year off certainly hurt a lot.

my bad about Hord. I do remember what a burner this guy is. I remember seeing one of his returns that looked pretty decent. Do you think he will return kicks this year as well?

I think Grimes is the obvious #1 at this point, with Hord at the #2 because even though he hasn't played alot he has 2 years in the system so as long as he can get past the mental roadblocks you would assume he can step right in and play. I look to see Parris or jackson to compete for that #3 spot knowing how much Weis likes to throw the fades and jump balls to the bigger receivers. Kamara and Tate could both contribute. I think we actually have the personnel to run a lot more 5 wide sets this year if we want to which would be nice to spread the D out and run with DD if he is named the starter. Plus, you throw AA in the mix as the Bush type player where you line him up all over the field and you give yourself a lot of options on offense.

haha. i think we have the personnel to run a lot of 5 wr sets, and i think we also have the personnel to run a lot of 4 RB sets. isn't it nice?

and as for DJ Hord returning kicks this year, I have no clue. There's a chance, but I think there will be a lot of guys competing for the slot. Just based on guys who did it last year, Walls, Grimes, West, I wouldn't be suprised to see Allen in the mix and there are a few others. Also, I know a lot of people weren't happy with Grimes returning kicks last year because he rarely broke them for really long returns, but his average was actually very good with 24.5/kick. I know that's not great, but it's really not bad either.

I think the WR's are going to be fine, how many people thought before Weis hit campus, that Stovall and Samardzija would be 1000 yd receivers.

Great point! I sure as heck didn't. I was thinking McKnight would certainly flourish, but Samardzija was not on the radar screen....
