Rumor has it he wasnt in practice all week. Any ideas why?
Understood, but once again, it'd be nice to know. I'm hoping that at least the coaches know.
The rumor mill has started.
I was told by someone who works at ND that he is gone.
I cant really say more than that.
Gone for good....sorry to say. I cant really say more than that.
Irish guard Matt Carufel, who started the last three games, has returned home to Minnesota and is expected to decide on his future at Notre Dame by Sunday, the Tribune has learned.
Carufel has been excused from practices this week due to "personal reasons." On Friday, Carufel was at his former high school in St. Paul, Cretin-Derham Hall, spoke extensively with assistant coach Andy Bishoff, and indicated that he may not return to the Irish.
"He's struggling with if he's going to stick around there or not," Bishoff told the Tribune. "He just doesn't know if he fit at Notre Dame like he thought he would."
Carufel also could return to Notre Dame to finish out the semester. If Carufel decides not to return to the Irish, Bishoff said Minnesota and Iowa are two schools likely to be at the top of the list of potential destinations.
Carufel's departure would be the third this fall for the Irish, after quarterback Demetrius Jones and tight end Konrad Reuland left the team. Backup lineman Chris Stewart left the Irish at one point to mull his future before ultimately deciding to return to the team.
It doesn't make them bad people. It may just be that football is not that important to them. I'd rather have a coach who is cracking skulls when things are bad, than one who is coddling the kids.
Of course, I have two responses:
As a human being: These kids should have all the time they need to find out what's best for them at the moment. After all, they are real people, not machines that we just cheer for on Saturdays. They need to do what's best for them because after their football careers are over--whether it be after Notre Dame or the NFL--they still have to live their lives. They need the balance that we, as the rest of world, strives for as well.
As a Notre Dame football fan: Jesus Christ, why can't these kids suck it up and act like the players they're supposed to be?! What kind of pansy needs to miss practice for a week and sit at home, thinking about what's "best for them"? What they should be doing is hitting the practice dummies as hard as possible all week long--then maybe some answers'll come to them as they're laying in a big tub of ice. Suck it up, boys.
While my gut goes with the second response, my head advocates the first. Maybe we should let him sort this out... :embar:
From what I've heard it is no better or worse than a 50% chance that he's gone for good. I do know that it's some sort of unique personal/family issue. Some have suggested that it's a serious illness in his family.
At this point I'm guessing that no one really knows for sure weather he's comming back, and that includes Matt, his parents, or CW.
Hey guys, is it fall break this week or next at ND? I remember that in the past the BC game would fall during break.
USC will kick off our break.
Something is starting to smell just a wee bit. Fazer, Jones and even Stewart's brief departure are understandable, but Rueland and Carufel smell of something wrong with leadership at ND. Two front line players who decided to leave mid season. Matt's smell the worst of all. He is starting, we just had a huge win and he leaves BC week. Our fearless leader may need to look in the mirror and ask if he has any responsibility. His Charlies way or the wrong way won't quite work with young players. NFL guys look at the $$$$$$$$$ paycheck and accept some crap. These kids may be saying they are fed up with his Jersey attitude and if your not winning, why not go somewhere that it is fun to play. Just some thoughts guys. A HUGE part of college football is getting the kids to WANT to play for you. The days of rants and verbal beating does not seem to echo with todays athletes. You don't see many screamers left in the college ranks. The successful guys are the Meyers, Schianno's, Poodle, and Stoops of the world. All these guys are "let's have fun" guys. Let's hope all this works out. Go IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
