This marks two games in a row, now, that Notre Dame has been heavily predicted to lose and breezed easily through an opponent...followed quickly thereafter by an immediate turnaround: "They should have won that game, and they did."

This week bears a striking resemblance to the Hawai'i Bowl reaction. The media and college football fans alike are bursting with stupidity. So many people were talking smack before this week, about how much Nevada was going to run all over us, and they are now saying that our win showed absolutely nothing. This really pisses me off.

What's the next excuse? And the next?

Michigan was overrated? USC's in a down year?

as this continues I will find it funny that these people spend sooo much of their time talking ND when they don't even like them. If you don't like us, then don't talk about us. You just look stupid when all you talk about is a team you don't like. Maybe all of the haters are closet ND fans???

Respect is given when its earned. ND hasn't done that yet. In fact I think the Nevada game, while impressive statistically, did you realize ND didn't score one point from about 10minutes left in the 3rd quarter? Finish the games please.

Michigan is not going to have 8 fumbles this year. Without those fumbles that game could have very well been a loss.

Just laugh and say, "Hawaii was favored when the line first came out." Enough said. The rest is just stupidity and hindsight.

And with Nevada, just ask them to go look at the predictions from many of the 'experts' BEFORE the game. Lots of predictions for losses, or very close wins. If they come at you with that crap afterwards, then again, it's just stupidity and ignorance. YOU CAN'T TALK SENSE INTO THOSE PEOPLE! Believe me, I've tried. Waste of time. Tonight I'm gonna start a thread on stupid things USC fans have been saying. Some of the stuff has been unreal.

And Phork, I really believe ND went straight vanilla after the 5th TD. I've been on them big time for finishing games, but in this case, I wasn't mad, because it looked as if they wanted to hold off on opening up the playbook for Michigan. Just listen to Michigan's DickRod talk about our offense. They have very little idea what we're capable of. I also was happy they kept running the ball late in the game, because I wanted that shutout. I wanted that statement. Normally, I don't care, but that shutout was a great thing for this much-maligned (and deservedly so) defense.

As for Michigan last year, that point has been brought up ad nauseum (sp). We've argued about it many times, and I won't argue my point anymore. Bottom line, we won, but it means sh!t this year. It won't be a cakewalk, but I predict a W nonetheless...

I'll ask again, who is saying we'll win? ESPN is fellating our match up, as both programs looked vastly improved. Please point me to these people that are saying we're going to dominate you, I'd love to take the points.

Good timing for this thread. Stewart Mandel had a big piece about this in his mailbag. Good read, somewhat states the obvious, but still good.

Charlie Weis, NBC contract among reasons fans hate Notre Dame - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

You may find this hard to believe (actually, you probably won't), but the team about which I receive the most e-mails is not Florida, Texas or USC. It's Notre Dame. And unlike with most schools, I receive nearly as many Irish-related queries from non-Notre Dame fans as from Domers. Generally, those particular readers aren't writing in to compliment the Irish.

Thus, in advance of Saturday's Notre Dame-Michigan duel -- a game 80 percent of the country will complain receives too much attention, but 75 percent will still watch -- I found this e-mail from Marc Perras of Somerville, Mass., to be particularly thought provoking.

Stewart, I think we agree that a perennial powerhouse for fans to love/hate makes any sport more fun. I've seen the love drift away from Notre Dame over the past decade, but the hate still seems to be of New York Yankees/Duke basketball proportions. Is it the NBC contract? Because it's certainly not the winning. Shouldn't fans be more worried about USC and Florida dominating the sport?

Marc has a point. The Yankees haven't won the World Series in a while, but at least they contend. Duke doesn't go to the Final Four every year, but the Blue Devils are usually in the mix. The Irish, however, haven't won a national championship in 21 years and have only finished in the top 10 (No. 9, in 2005) once in the past 15 years. And yet, national resentment toward Notre Dame remains as strong as ever.

Why is that? Probably because...

• The Irish play by their own set of rules. Twenty years ago, Notre Dame's status as an independent was hardly unique. Florida State, Miami, Penn State and others were independents as well. But in the BCS era, when so much is made of conference strength, it frustrates fans of other teams that the BCS treats Notre Dame as a conference unto itself. Why should one school get special treatment?

• The relentless media attention. While doing preseason radio interviews around the country, I was asked about Notre Dame more than any team besides Florida. No matter the media market, the Irish are a constant topic of conversation. Meanwhile, one of ESPN's most visible analysts is a former Irish coach-turned-cheerleader. In a sport where fans are perpetually paranoid about perceived media favoritism, Notre Dame is the one case where it's quite noticeably true.

• The NBC contract. At this point, Notre Dame's TV contract is not nearly as lucrative as those of any Big Ten or SEC school, but that's not really the point. The fact that the Irish have their own dedicated network irks people for the same reason as my first point: special treatment.

• Their (perceived) arrogance. Notre Dame fans may not have much to brag about wins-wise lately, but they're the first to point out their school "does it the right way" -- high graduation rates, no juco transfers, no jock majors. In theory, this approach should be something to which the rest of the country aspires. In reality, most people simply refuse to believe it's true and resent the fact that a vocal fan base perpetuates this "myth" (though I personally don't believe it's a myth).

• The BCS bowl losses. Notre Dame is hardly the only team that's lost multiple BCS games, and Ohio State and Oklahoma have received their share of criticism for similar failures. But those Buckeye and Sooner teams were BCS-conference champions that would have played in one of the big games regardless. Every time the Irish lay an egg against an Oregon State or an LSU, there's frustration over the fact someone more "deserving" could have received that bid.

• Their coach is a (perceived) S.O.B. I don't remember a whole lot of venom toward the Irish when Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham were coaching them. But from the minute Charlie Weis arrived on campus and announced his intent to out-scheme all comers -- then received a big, fact contract for almost beating USC -- he became a villain. While he's changed his tone considerably the past couple of years, first impressions are hard to shake.

There are a couple of interesting historical footnotes to add to this discussion. For one, most fans don't realize that in the 1920s, Notre Dame actively sought membership in the Big Ten, but the league's schools -- most vocally Michigan -- voted against it. And in light of the hubbub about the Irish's preferential bowl treatment, it's incredible to think that for more than four decades (1925-68), the school did not allow the team to play in bowl games, period.

But that's all moot today. If the Irish win Saturday, and if they string together more victories after that, they're going to rise up the polls, and as they do, fans around the country will inevitably grow more and more incensed.

Here's what I wonder. What would happen if Notre Dame does fulfill Dr. Lou's prophecy and reach the BCS Championship Game? More importantly, what would happen if the Irish won? Would respect finally replace all that resentment and skepticism?

I doubt it, and here's why. While no self-respecting Big 12 or SEC fan would ever admit it, there's one universal theme behind all that hatred: envy.

Here's one from one of your sites, actually has Mich winning by only a small margin, not a blowout. But I thought I'd post it just to get CtF and the other Mich haters riled up:

Sept. 12: Notre Dame

Stupid Comments: Normally, I'd say "Yea! A MAC team!" (I keed, I keed). Notre Dame, at least on paper, is supposed to be decent this year. Piles of returning starters on both sides of the ball. An offensive line coach who is actually competent. A stable of receivers, running backs, and a decent QB. Let's face it, on experience, starts, and games played, Notre Dame is better than Michigan. They've got ten returning starters on offense for pete's sake. But this is Michigan Notre Dame. The better team never wins. When either school isn't in the middle of its worst season in history, the rebuilding team or the underdog team is a 50/50 shot to pull off the upset. I think Warren and BooBoo cover up ND's receivers. Stevie Brown WILL NOT BE A SAFETY. And I don't think we're going to spot Notre Dame 21 points on fumbles inside our 20. I think Michigan's got a good chance to win this, but that could just be blind optimism talking. Michigan's going to have trouble is at safety (shocker, I know) and at Defensive Tackle. Tenuta's defense will blitz the ever living hell out of Forcier or Robinson and create a couple of turnovers. All that said, Notre Dame is still coached by Charlie Weis. Whether he's calling the plays or not doesn't matter. It's because of him that God has forsaken Notre Dame and is currently a Boston College fan. The Wolverines play inspired and the Spread does to Notre Dame what the spread used to do to Michigan. It's a toss up, but Michigan wins. By the slimmest of margins.

Final Prediction Based on Flimsy Evidence: Michigan 21, Notre Dame 20

Here's one from an unbiased website, predicting a Mich win:

For this prediction I will focus on the betting line which currently sits at 3 points in favor of Notre Dame.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan Betting Line and Prediction

Who will win? Let's examine.

When Notre Dame has the ball: The Irish like to max protect and use ball fakes before getting their fantastic WR's Golden Tate and Michael Floyd open on deep balls.

Michigan has two good starting CB's in Boubacar Cissoko and Donovan Warren but depth is lacking.

The key will be how ND handles Michigan's blitzing and whether they can run a bit or not.

When Michigan has the ball: Both Tate Forcier (thrower then runner in that order) and Denard Robinson (pure speed with a good arm but raw) will take snaps with Robinson not likely to throw much at all.

Forcier is unusally calm but ND has the ability to put pressure on him behind ND DC Tenuta's schemes.

The key for Michigan will be to run the ball. Last year UM racked up some yards on ND but 6 turnovers spelled doom in a 35-17 loss.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan Final Prediction

Michigan shut out ND the last time they came to Ann Arbor with pressure defense. Brandon Graham will continue that trend as Michigan pressures Clausen into some INT's and wins a close one as long as they take care of the ball this time around, covering the +3 spread.

Honestly most people get there sporting news from ESPN, but I did see some good coverage in the USA Today. Plus you did rise in the rankings, much higher than most here expected.

NDinL.A.

I would expect a Mich forum post to be in favor of Michigan, I am, and the other post just says Michigan will cover the spread. Most major news sources still point to ND to win.

I still think ND wins, but this game makes me nervous for several reasons.

#1 Its ND vs Michigan, anything can happen.
#2 DickRod is still searching for a signature win over a hated rival, this fits the bill.
#3 Michigans running game will finish with points, unlike Nevada. I am still unconvinced ND can stop the run against an equally athletic team. Even though I think the defense is the best it has been in a long time.

As for not knowing just exactly what ND can do, I think you under estimate a what a coach and his staff at this level can do. I realize their might be hidden wrinkles, but unless they are using the full compliment of trick plays that BoiseState employs, then I don't think there isn't much they haven't thought of.

My prayer is that it ends in an absolute destruction. Frankly I think Nevada is better than Western Michigan and I think ND wins going away.

I hate being nervous about a game that we should really win by 2 touchdowns or more. A rivalry is a rivalry, however. I'm sticking with 28-14 Flying Floyds.

I love all this haterade being drank by the masses. It just proves that we are improving enough to the point that people care about us again, whether that be positive or not. When I get people say that they hate ND, it is for the exact reasons others have already stated: independent, BCS, NBC, etc. I hope the haters only grow.

Although we are improving, the hatred for our school I think is independent (pun intended) of whether or not we are winning. The Notre Dame Broadcasting Contract is enough for all others to despise us.

Speaking of ND hate!

Here is a little piece from an ESPN article.

After they all said that Hawaii was an easy team for us, but for USC, somehow they are not.

Here is the snippet.

No need to worry about Matt Barkley; Pete Carroll puts his QBs in position to succeed - ESPN

The USC record book backs Carroll's confidence. This is the program that will go anywhere in September and play anyone -- and win big. The experience level of the quarterback has varied considerably, but the result never does.

The Trojans have won seven straight road openers -- six of them against big-six conference opponents. Average score: 43-12. The opponents: Colorado, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Hawaii, Arkansas, Nebraska, Virginia.

Not a cupcake in the bunch. And not a single close game.
