Talk about a song that aged better than the rest. Colin Hay has turned Overkill into I think one of the best college rock songs of all time. I couldn't care less about Men at Work when they were popular in the 80's but when he changed this song up and went accoustic for Scrubs, it became one of my favorite songs ever and a go to on the karaoke circuit.

This version with Choir Choir Choir! is especially interesting.

I'd never heard this version. I've seen him do a solo acoustic version, but not this. Really good. I was never a big fan of MAW, but loved this song when it first came out and very clearly remember where I was when I heard it the first time and thought, "Oh man, this is gonna be a big hit."

MAW is just one of those classic 80s bands with a diverse sound. Wish we had more diverse sounding music these days.

So there are some guys on here with good taste I feel.

What guitarist touched you the most when you saw him?

I've seen everyone you can list outside of Jimmy and I'll say it's a tie between Steve Howe and David Glimour. I've seen Yes & Asia 40+ times. There is nothing I love more than the into to Roundabout. This is my other favorite.

Out of those I've actually seen... I can't begin to say who "touched" me the most. I guess it would be Clapton or Santana. I probably "enjoyed" Angus, Gibbons, Richards, Prince, and Eddie more though. Joe Walsh and Gilmore completely destroyed my brain though lol.. Steve Vai playing for DLR was pretty awesome. Stevie Ray shakes you in a whole different way.

Guys I've seen off the top of my head. No order. Really hard to rank..
Eric Clapton
Angus Young
Prince
Joe Walsh
Billy Gibbons
Gilmour
Keith Richards
Lindsey Buckingham
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page
Mark Knopfler
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Townshend
Eddie Van Halen
B.B. King
Carlos Santana
Steve Vai

I haven't seen as many different guitarists as you and YJ, but I have seen Clapton, Muddy Waters, Gibbons, the Skynyrd guys before the crash, Dickie Betts, Keith Richards, Ace Frehley, Lowell George and a few others. Clapton was probably the one who touched me the most at that time, as I was a HUUUUUGGGE Clapton fan at that point in my life. Keef's probably the one I most enjoyed when I saw him and the Stones. I never got to see Duane Allman, but his playing moves me more than anyone else's. I "grok" Duane and what he was doing.

Ahh, Steve Howe. Talent beyond measure. One the best in rock history (I'd put him in the top 3 with Jimi and Jeff). He's that guy that I can totally appreciate and admire, but am not necessarily a huge fan of (I can't play his stuff at all and thus don't really worship at his altar, so to speak). I'm always amazed at what he can do on a guitar and how consistently good and often brilliant he is.

Agreed! That’s exactly where I got re-introduced to him. His “Man at Work” album is great.

I know most people don't think of Prince when they think of the better guitar players, but he was crazy good. I've seen him a few times. I saw his last concert ever, her in ATL, but it was just him and his piano for the most part. His guitar wasn't gently weeping in one of my favorite ensembles ever...

The best ones that I’ve seen live are (in no particular order):

Eddie Van Halen
Joe Walsh
Brad Paisley (don’t care for his music, but he can pick)
Jon Butcher
Steve Vai
Joe Perry
Ted Nugent
Ace Frehley

One dude who really left an impression was bassist Billy Sheehan. That cat can hammer a bass and make it sound like a six-string electric guitar. I’ll never forget him & Steve Vai basically doing a “dueling banjos” on stage when they backed DLR. Phenomenal.

Yup. The guy was so F'ing talented in so many ways. I remember when the album 1999 came out when I was a kid. Wan't even in my teens yet... Totally blew me the F away. Those first 5 songs were like wow.

I was a little down leaving his last concert, as it was very non-tradition Prince. Almost sold my tickets after reading some of the reviews/feedback. So glad I went.

I remember that with DLR. Crazy. Eat 'Em and Smile tour was off the hook. Cinderella and Tesla opening acts. IIRC, it was a school night concert at MSA... So happy my parents were cool about concerts at that age.

I have seen a few and in cool places too.

Mark Knopfler @ Red Rocks
B.B King @ at his club in Hollywood/Universal (front row seat)
George Lynch @ Line 6 Demo Mars Music in Orange (10 feet away for whole performance)
Eddie Van Halen (of course I grew up with 70's and 80's music)
Not a big fan of his music, but John Mayer was cool to see live.

I am a wannabe drummer so more into that than the guitarist.

I think Red Rocks is my all time favorite venue. Last time I was there (2015), we went to see Pretty Lights on a total whim. I was out there on a planned business trip but had Sandbar tix (PIT) for the Aldean/Chesney concert at Mile High on Saturday (awesome by the way). We wanted to find something to do that Friday night, and decided to give Pretty Lights a shot (never heard of him before). The girls had never been to RR, so picked up some magic cookies and had a blast. I've been wanting to head back out there when Mumford and Sons play there again.

You might appreciate this then. I saw Dave Lombardo sit in with a jazz band at a house party in San Luis Obispo. That guy can play like nobody’s business.

That is awesome! Did you have a clue that was going to be happening that night?

Have you ever been to The Baked Potato? There are usually some great sit in sessions at those shows.

Another small little cool venue is The Mint.

I saw Todd Nichols (Toad the Wet Sprocket) and his band Lapdog there.

Was supposed to see Toad & Gin Blossoms this month but got Corona'd. Toad's a Top 10, maybe Top 5 all-time band for me.

They and Counting Crows were that needed lightness to counter everything fantastically heavy in the early 90's. Their first 4 alums for the most part were great start to finish.

Yeah it was kind of crazy. It was some random party at a friend of friends house back in the early 90’s. I heard them playing and when I got a good look at the drummer I was like “no way!”.

Never been to the Baked Potato.

Do you have a drum set? If so what do you play? I’ve got a Yamaha Beech Custom set that I bought in 1999 or there abouts when I got demoted from bass to drums. Lol.

I have the Roland TD8 V-drums from my days living in a condo. They are buried in storage so I haven't touched them in years. At the beginning of the year, I was thinking about selling them and getting a new set as motivation to start playing again, but covid hit and all plans to spend money were put on hold.

Those Roland electric sets are cool. They have a nice bounce and action on the heads. The newest ones are insane. Crazy how far those have come from way back when. Anyhow, If you do sell it let me know. My younger brother who plays and lives near Pomona and was talking about getting a electric set.

I haven’t played in awhile but I’m in the process of building a new work shed so I can get my tools out of the garage and set up in there. The wife is gonna love it! Haha.

I will definitely let you know if I decide to sell the set. It seems most people just want it for the sound module/computer.

Stars stars stars.

I know it's blasphemy to some but Trucks & Haynes are right there with Duane & Dickey.

RIP Butch and Gregg

I'm a big ABB fan and Duane is one of my 3 favorite guitarists, but I'll admit that Trucks is as good if not better on slide. What he can do with a slide is unreal. Haynes is a killer guitarist, but I've never been able to get into him. Too much overdrive in his tone just turns me off.
