I made a promise to myself to stay away from the board yesterday, as hard as it was. This is my first time visiting the board since the game.

I figured the reactions would be brutal, and they are, and there are so many threads (assuming they were made in an instant reaction) that I can't click through every one without my blood boiling.

My question to you Irish Envy is this....

What happened?

You've had a day to try and settle down, and gather your thoughts. Even when my buddy asks me how we lost......I have no answer? He asks did Clausen have a bad day? I say well no.....not really?

Someone try to explain to me what happened yesterday? Why did we lose to Navy?

Our offense had that "one game" where it came out rather flat, and took a while to get into rhythmn. And our defense barely bothered to show up.

We lost because Navy played a near perfect game and had lady luck on their side more than once. Irish fans have to realize this Navy team isn't awefull and came within a two point conversion of tying the OSU.

This is hard to swallow. For the first time in my life I find myself questioning Notre Dame football, and its head coach....

i am right there with you. i really wasnt even that angry about that loss yesterday.... how can i be angry at the end when they didnt deserve to win...

its a shame what has happened to notre dame. from the fact that people are saying its ok to lose to navy 2 out of 3 and 2 in a row to the fact we are scheduling patsies like nevada and washington state.

this program is a shell of what it has always been... navy players didnt go crazy cause its not a big deal to beat notre dame anymore.

now ive gone and pissed myself off.

In order to make yourself optimistic realize that we only lost to USC by 7 points, and we only lost to a Navy team at home by 2 points after they almost beat Ohio State this year.

You have to accept mediocrity in order to be a Notre Dame football fan, the sooner you do it the better you'll feel about the situation.

Actually you don't have to accept mediocrity to be a fan of ND football. ND stands for quite the opposite. You do however have to be realistic and realize how far down this program had gotten and what direction it was heading untill very recently. Because we are ND, going back up the mountain takes a little bit more time than for others but we will get there. Victory will be that much sweeter!!!

I didn't get to watch the game until about 1:30 in the morning. So, when things started to go bad, I began to watch the game on TIVO fast forward mostly because I didn't want to listen to Haden and Hammond. But, I must say, it is much funnier to watch the Navy offense run up and down the field on us when it is in double speed. It kind of looked like a Benny Hill skit. The only thing missing was the "Wacky Sax". Made a tough pill much easier to swallow.

Where exactly was this program headed?

Last I remember Charlie took over a 6-6 football team that actually could beat Navy, and 2 years later the program went 3-9.

This program has steadily declined from what it once used to be, most of the people defending Charlie are old enough to only think of Charlie as our best coach they can remember. If you dont hold Notre Dame football to a Championship standard, then what seperates this program from Indiana?

It may take me a week to work through the pain. This is like my divorce - stunned - - - I got over it but it felt like it would be with me forever - - the D took longer than a week to get over. Eventualy, made me stronger and best thing that ever happened to me - I don't know how that corelates. But, I've felt this before. It getting harder and harder.

I couln't agree with you more. ND should be held to championship standards in everything that they do. But we have to be realistic. Coach Weis took over a 6-6 team that was on its way to joining the Ivy league. Given NDs unique circumstances we cannot expect our program to be turned around overnight. This seems to be a hard concept to grasp in a society that constantly seeks instant gratification.

I find it hard to believe that Ty's final years was as bad as you believe it to be. 6-6 is identically how we finished the season last year.

There is no unique circumstances and this program isn't as magical as you think, if people truly believe that college football has changed in a way that its impossible for Notre Dame to become a consistent winner once again in college football then our tradition and prestige absolutely doesn't matter. We might as well join the Big East, put a logo on our helmet, and have a black-out game once a year.

This program was headed back uphill, after the 3-9 season. If you can't see, or won't accept, that fact, then there is nothing left to say to you.

this isn't helping.....some one tell me it is all going to be ok?

What will make you feel ok?

I'll try to help:
We're bowl eligible this season
We currently have a Top 15 recruiting class coming in next season
Kyle Rudolph & Michael Floyd will be back next season
Jimmy Clausen & Golden Tate could return next season

How can you not be headed back uphill after a 3-9 season, 4-8 would even be progress.

We improved to 7-6, and now we're looking at hopefully more than 8 wins this year.

But do you see this program taking the next step following this season?

The next step being competing for a National Championship, because if everyone returns next season we're going to be ranked in the Preseason Top 10.

Well I guess we will agree to disagree on this one. I'm not sure if magical is the word I would use but this program (and school) does stand for something special. The college football landscape HAS changed drastically but NDs core values haven't and shouldn't. That being said, I must have expressed myself badly because I do believe this program can be a consistent winner and that we should expected it to be. But we should expect (understand why) it takes more time here than in Alabamma. And personally, I'm ok with that bc I'm a fan of ND first and foremost for what the school stands for!!!

I was almost going to forget... yes Ty's last years were awefull. There is no other variable that has a higher correlation with NCs than recruiting. Ask top flight players like Mark Sanchez how ND, under Willingham, handled his recruiting. Identical numbers mean absolutely nothing.

...mmmm hmmmm, now thats where my head has been. Agree completely...

We might have sucked under Davie, but we beat Navy, and started losing to tier 2 teams ie...MI state, Nwestern, BC, Purdue too frequently for my liking. Under Willingham, we kept up the losing trend, but didn't lose to Navy. Weis generated some fireworks on offense, and ceratinly made up for the defeceit in recruiting...but the losing continues...and we've lost to NAVY TWICE! I put Navy with Mountain West and WAC talent level...we are now getting spanked by tier 3 teams...and TCU, Utah, BYU, Boise State...we could easily lose to all of them...we are now tier 3...but somehow, that is progress to some folks...hell it certainly is movement.

We had a bad day. Navy is not that bad, they played OSU very tough too. The D stiffened after a couple bad drives. Our offense came out slow and stayed that way pretty much the whole game. At some point in these PLAYERS need to step up in my opinion, all of them together not just Jimmy and Golden making a play. Being in the redzone and that close that many times and not putting it away. I don't care who is calling the plays, when we got shut out on the 4th and goal, that was our players not getting it done 4 plays in a row IMO. It seemed that Navy played a great disciplined game and we just had all the little things go wrong on offense and on top of that we stayed flat.

Interesting. I just spoke to one of the most loyal ND fans I know, and he is calling for CW's head.

Big23Head, it wasn't just a "bad day." It was a catastophe.

Notre Dame football has given me a just "fuck it" attitude.

I'm sick of living and dying with this team. They lost to navy....fuck it. I'm done trying to defend ND football. It's a shame Jimmy and company are having to deal with such a piss poor defense.

We seriously didn't punt the whole game? My goodness

and we should have scored every time. They played us the same way BC, Washington and USC played us. Soft coverage, drop 7-8 guys and keep the plays in front of them. Let Jimmy dump it off and we sputter in the redzone. Pittsburgh, if smart, will do the same thing. Now its Weis's job to "outscheme". If he cant do it, he should be let go at the end of the year.

What are Notre Dame's core values? Tell me how this team under Charlie Weis has lived up to those values. Because I clearly don't see it.

That excuse seperating us becoming a National Contendor to a school like Alabama is even more of a reach, Alabama righted the ship due to hiring a good proven coach to upgrade their program. There was a clear reason they didn't have continued success after Stallings and thats because they didn't hire the right coaches to lead their program, guys like Dubose & Shula flopped just like Davie & Willingham flopped.

Look at it this way... there are really only two possible outcomes at the end of the year...

#1 Charlie is fired... JC is definately gone, Golden is possibly gone and we loose some key recruits. Next year is a transition year and we actually have to wait many years before we are contending.

#2 Charlie stays... Golden definately stays, JC possibly stays and we keep a top 10 (as of now) and possibly top 5 recruiting class. Anything is possible next year as we have a NC worthy offense and hopefully a defense that is one year behind our offensive and allows us to be a contender next year.

Charlie will not be let go this year. There is simply too much to loose and too little to gain by letting him go. Knowing this and the fact that it is was unrealistic to expect a 6-6 team to go 12-0, just enjoy the games!!!

Quickly... I suggest you look at the academic requirements at Alabama Vs. ND. I also suggest you look at the amount of JC college studs that transferred in. This allows the transition to be made significantly faster!!!
