Was Joe Alt one of the two greatest offensive tackles in ND history?

There have been some great ones: Jim Martin, George Kunz, Mike McGlinchey and Aaron Taylor. George Connor played tackle at Notre Dame and was the first recipient of the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman. Martin, Kunz and McGlinchey were all All-Americans with Martin is in the College Football Hall of Fame.

I would personally put Ronnie Stanley and Zach Martin before McGlinchey in recent history. He benefited greatly from playing alongside Q. Ryan Harris also belongs in consideration, but I would say Taylor is the top dog. Alt is definitely top 3-5 IMO.

Luke Petitgout is a name not to forget, although I wouldn’t put him in the top group of ND OTs

Interesting that Aaron Taylor played his whole NFL career at guard. Alt and Martin at the top for me. I suppose Martin moved to guard too in the nfl.

If I recall, Taylor was named an All-American as a guard in 1992. The next season Taylor moved to tackle and won the Lombardi Award. That’s how good Aaron Taylor was.

Maybe if strictly looking at their time at ND

I'd still put Taylor above him for sure but maybe him next or Stanley. I still remember being amazed seeing Stanley absolutely stoning dudes at RT as a redshirt freshman

And Zach Martin may go down as one of the greatest guards ever in the NFL. He's a perennial All Pro. But he didn't seem as dominant at ND as a tackle from my memory

I know McGlinchy was considered good and a high draft pick but he never really stood out to me too much. And he had that horrible pass pro against Georgia in 2017 to give up the sack that essentially ended the game

Its kinda hard not to let their draft positions and subsequent NFL success or lack thereof skew their time at ND

There were some monsters on Holtz's lines but they never materialized as much in the NFL--they all probably sucked at pass pro--but guys like Mike Rosenthal, Jeremy Wisne, Dean Brown, Tim Grunhart, Mike Heldt, Mirco Jerkovich, Lindsay Knapp, etc. all seemed really dominant at the time to me. And was so long ago can't remember which ones were strictly tackles. Seems like Moore and Holtz would move them around a lot

big mike had waaaay too many false starts and absolutely crapped the bed in some big moments...he shouldn't even remotely even be considered one of the best...he certainly played better than his ranking out of HS but in recent memory, ALT has been prob top dog and I would say Stanley would be next imo....

Aaron Taylor was the standard for me for a very long time. Ronnie Stanley probably exceeded that standard. He was awesome and had he played in the 90s he probably gets All American two times as Taylor did. Aaron Taylor, as good as he was, would find it difficult in college football today as a Notre Dame player to win individual awards.

I think you switch Taylor and Martin but that would be a hell of a video game o line.

Alt's up there, but not one of the greatest. He did not play well against Ohio State or Louisville. After the Ohio State game, I was confident he'd be coming back for one more year.

Zack Martin is tops for me. I think fans dilute how good he was just because he moved to guard as a pro.

In college, Martin was the weaponized equivalent of tazing the guy across from him every play and moving him wherever the play dictated.
The best example was him going against Ryan Kerrigan in his rs freshman year. Kerrigan was a senior, future 1st rounder, played in the league for a dozen years and had about a 100 sacks in his career.

Martin stoned him all game long. One of those arrival moments that made people take notice.

Fischer was a two-time All-American and won the Outland Trophy in 1948 and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

I read his wikipedia page too.

It's seems like most where referring to players they've actually seen play. Unless you are in your mid-80s?

Not quite but getting there. Just because we didn't see them play, does that mean they didn't exist or we should ignore their accomplishments?

PFF disagrees on Ohio State. 44 did absolutely nothing against Alt on pass plays. He faced him most of the night.

Nobody covered themselves in glory against Louisville, but he was the best that day of the five and the only one who graded over an 80.

Wishful thinking for anyone who thought he'd be coming back in 2024.

You're fucking crazy if you think I'm watching any highlights of Ohio State again. I still haven't recovered....might be the worst loss since 1993 BC. It takes the cake over 2005 USC.

The good ole days when elected oligarchies ran the show, not elected democracies.
Yeah. A lot has changed. Money doesn’t rule things today. We’ve got the charade now till they are bought or indicted.
