This news about others getting screwed Is finally hitting the papers and Is a very good thing for all of us who have been hit by these crazy data overage charges! I switched to AT&T after I had been charged 2,000$ for overages and I still refuse to pay. I just want to know If anyone else on here has any stories because their customer service is taught to treat you like you've been dumb and should have upgraded before the end of the month.

They deserve all the negative pub they get. I'll just leave that there.

Nobody knows what why data usage has "sky rocketed", but they know it's Verizon's fault? Gotcha...

It's been like that for years. I had numerous questionable bills.. This isn't an isolated incident

I don't have Verizon, I haven't had any data issue in the past, but these last 2 months my data usage has went up 5-7 gigs a month over what it has been for years. This has only been on 1 of the phones linked to my account. We still can't figure out why.

Verizon is a company that cares about only money. They don't care how bad they screw you over. Sucks even in this day we still only have Verizon in our area.

My issue with overages, including home internet usage, is that these meters being used to measure are not under the same scrutiny of something like a natural gas meter or electric meters.

One month on my previous ISP they billed me $80 for overages where my router said I was still under my cap. They argued about it and when asked about their methodolgy their reps were in the dark. Needless to say I left.

You all realize that there is absolutely NO WAY that Verizon or any carrier would over-bill on purpose, right? Not only would it be impossible to pull off without its customers' knowledge, but the PR fallout would far outweigh whatever financial benefit you seem to think they're trying to achieve. If there is a carrier issue, it's a mistake and it will get straightened out. Despite what you all want very much to think- big brother is not out to get you.

There are platforms that are in place (by FCC mandate) for exactly this reason actually. Sooooo yeah...

In Canada we have a goverment body that is in charge of things like this called Measurement Canada. Their mandate is to ensure fair and equitable trade via measuring devices. ISP usage and Cell usage do not fall under their mandate. Most people aren't aware of how to track their usage and just swallow what the company insists is correct, but to what standard?

If you can provide me links to your FCC stuff I would appreciate that.

I don't have anything ATM, but will look later. For now, try Googling "FCC truth in billing"

I'm just reading over that now and that appears to be laying out clearly where charges come from, IE, third party companies or what the charge is about.
I see nothing about about usage meters and fair practice?

(a) The purpose of these rules is to reduce slamming and other telecommunications fraud by setting standards for bills for telecommunications service. These rules are also intended to aid customers in understanding their telecommunications bills, and to provide them with the tools they need to make informed choices in the market for telecommunications service.

EDIT: Actually there is more reading to do, but glossing over the chapters I don't see much that pertains to our subject. IE, proper metering of data.

To go with me earlier post, I haven't had any overages yet. I just noticed a large spike in the data usage on one of my lines. I talked to that person, not one of my kids, and they said they've done nothing different.

This happened to me about a year ago. What I found was that the wifi antenna in my daughter's phone was bad. Basically kicked her off wifi unless she was within a few feet of the router. Device was an IPhone 5. Noticed a spike of at least 5gb because of it. Had to replace the device. No trouble since.

Some phones have wifi booster automatically turned on.
iPhone was famous for this.

See the phone line on my account belongs to a person who doesn't have, or use, WiFi. I had them go into their Facebook settings and turn auto play off for the videos and such to see if it helps but they went from using 2-3 gigs a month to 10+. I asked and nothing has changed in their use of the phone.

Most phones track data usage. You can even reset the counter whenever you want with a couple of touches. Has anyone compared their physical phone records with their bill?

Also, providers usually document data usage online, which makes it easier to track (and complain about if it is wrong).

I assume with so much visibility into usage, it would be hard to pull a broad scam like this without getting caught.

Actually...who really checks their data? I'm betting that less than a 10% of people actually look into how much data they use. I know I never check mine. Most people just accept the bill for what it is and pay it.

So running scams like this actually wouldn't be too far fetched.

Probably unlikely, I agree, but you give consumers way too much credit.

Its quite easy, and I am talking ISPs here. They can mail you a bill with overages attached and you generally have no way of knowing if its true or not. Data metering is not set against a standard by which legal trade is acceptable. This is a HUGE problem.

lol this is a valid point; but I'm speaking with the benefit of inside knowledge regarding metering data usage. Can't really comment intelligently on the WF situation, however.
