Ty, Rasism and ND

Once again the ND is racist card is being played. First comparing Ty and Charlie and then a little with the Jones transfer. The Jones thing is just unfortunate, however he should have seen the writing on the wall, he is not CW type of QB and he did play badly against GT. However the Ty thing is bothersome because is has gone on for 3 years now and also, I do not recall Ty making any type of comment on this matter at all. I really believe that is one of the reason he was hired at UW, he did no whining or complaining when he was let go that I can recall. If I am wrong I am sure someone will point that out. Of course most of the sports world (ESPN) has spoken for him, so he really does not have to say much. I thought by now some of the real reason for him being let go would have surfaced, he did not want to fire his staff, he contact UW before asking ND permission, and his family did not like the midwest, not to mention the W/L record and recruiting. I see no way for this racist card to go away concerning ND. If CW wins a NC within the next 3 years, those people will say ND changed admissions, the schedule, etc. I am just wondering if this racist thing could hurt other black candidates get jobs. Most coaches get fired at some point and I am sure it is never pleasant for anyone. Could university presidents be looking at the ND situation and think they never want to go through that!! We all know the alumni and boosters are out of control at other colleges and at times university presidents succumb to their wishes. What does everyone else thing?

I have always felt the race card hurts African American candidates... The Rhodes Green Bay thing really started it... people scream so loud when a black man is fired from a head coaching job, justly or otherwise. This creates a ton of negative press and emotion towards the team or school in question... AD's and General Managers see this... why hire ANY man who you can not fire at some point without damning yourself...

Notre Dame currently is a perfect example...

ACamp1900, I agree with you. Do you think it is somewhat different for pros then college? I think even though we all know college football is big business we still treat it differently from professional football. GM's and owners still take some heat, but it does go away at some point. Does anyone mention the Rhodes GB thing anymore? I think Ty, ND and racism will be joined at the hip for ever.

I think the fact that A.A. coaches are rising in the ranks quicker in the NFL has dropped the talk a lot in the pros... until Black coaches do the same in college it will be a major issue... a lot of good black coaches will get passed up and a lot of good AD will get GRILLED when they fire one...

ND and Ty will be joined at the hip until ND wins a title... period!

Who cares, Ty sucks balls and is gonna get stomped this weekend.

Ty's a good man, he just didn't coach at ND... I have nothing bad to say about him aside from ND was obviously not the place from him to succeed... he proved that on the field and in recruiting

If I remember correctly, part of the reason Ty was hired was because he is black. I heard ND received at least a little pressure to hire hm for this reason.

In my opinion, he was a proven average coach, based on a win/loss record, and should not have been hired in the first place. It seems the opposite of what is now being said was true: They now say "Coach with good record, hired, then fired because of racism." I think it is more a case of "Coach hired because of race despite average record, let go because of inadequate performance."

He and his teams were going downhill fast and he was defiantly enjoying the ride. It was time to let him go.

That was my perception.

Ty is not a bad game day coach. His recruiting blows though. He is gone. End of story as far as I'm concerned.

Ty was hired because he proved at Stanford that he could win at a school with very high academic standards...

he has been a hit everywhere to this point BUT Notre Dame... sometimes that's the way it goes

The only thing he said was when asked if Race had anything to do with his firing he would be foolish to say "no".

He never said it was racism outright, but he did say that it DID play a part.

(i did a quick search on Google for it, but did not spot the quotation)

Plus we have an African-American Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator along with Hispanic Offensive Line and strenght coaches. How is ND racist?

Throw the facts out of the window when talking about ND. Thats the press stance, written or unwritten. Clearly not winning, or at least recruiting was what cost TY his job. I haven't heard any mention of people thinking the DD thing was in any way race-related, unless you are talking about the QB race (pun intended).

Where did Ty coach prior to Standford? Maybe he just thrives in the PAC 10 somehow.... Even if his last 2 seasons say otherwise...

The IMMENSE irony in all of this is that people have such a short memory about 'racism'. It wasn't that long ago that GTech fans were throwing fish at the Irish players, or the KKK was marching against the university in South Bend. Do these people really think that a Catholic institution that condemns racism is really more likely to fire someone who is a minority than another university? I can barely remember last year and even I know how ironic those accusations are.

People like to take potshots at major institutions like the Government, or the Holy See, or major corporations. It's something that makes you look like you're standing up to something big and bad. Ignore these people. They are the ones that cry wolf so much that real prejudice and intolerance go unnoticed. Honestly people that spread this should be ashamed of themselves.

Ty was judged by the content of his coaching, not by the color of his skin.

Oh and can one of the mods please change the thread title to "racism"? Not meant in a mean way, just bothers me.

I'm sick of talking about Ty. Why let ESPN drag this tired old subject up again?
