it almost seems embarrassing to point this out but a full naval blockade is like a textbook act of war and it seems like we would need congressional authorization before starting one, right? Or is the constitution optional?
I think it’s a bit less of an act of war than launching missiles and droppings bombs on the country. But yes I agree all of this should have required Congressional authorization

I agree, but I think there are some (extremely dubious) arguments for why bombing isn’t necessarily covered. I don’t think those arguments apply to blockades, which were around in the 18th century and therefore expressly contemplated by the framers.

They'll make a justification based on protecting shipping. Probably would say it's not a full naval blockade.

Congress is very cucked and won't do anything anyway. Most of them probably support what's happening to some degree anyway.

Congress has become so sclerotic where the legislative branch is effectively useless. You could almost say the are giving consent by negation if you pervert the constitution enough.

No, Gatt, now it’s Joever. Remember when IE was burning down when trans day was on Easter Sunday? Joe Biden was a bad catholic? I’m our resident religious experts will be able to us if this is bad, or their devotion to Trump is more than their religious devotion. Expecting them to stand on their religious beliefs for anything other than hating gay people won’t happen.

Regardless of what anyone wants to call it, we're already at war. Given the ramifications this could have it seems approval would be appropriate.

He's losing his mind.

Not sure what year he thinks it is but going after the Pope is really fucking dumb.

My mom takes care of elderly people. This is reminding me of when some with dementia start getting really nasty and mean when things start accelerating. His tweets have always been unpresidential but his Easter post and now this fight with the Pope is just straight up unhinged.

Has anyone actually successful won against a pope?

Some old geriatrics will still support Donny but my god what an unforced error.

Maybe during the Reformation or medieval times but otherwise, I dont think so. But that's always short-term.

It's red meat for some evangelical and cafeteria Catholics too I guess.

We need to have a come to Jesus meeting. Why is your Twitter set to "comic sans"? This is far more disturbing than anything I've seen from DJT
Haha I saw that poll on Reddit and thought the same thing. Is what font you see up to the user or the poster? I don’t use twitter.

I have to imagine it's set by the user. Because I see the "usa polling" account (run by a Canadian oddly enough) tweets and it is always in the standard font.

Its unhinged in a couple ways. Impulse control appears to be gone.

1) Picking a fight with the Pope is stupid. Catholics basically decide who is going to run the country at this point. Evangelicals are staunchly republican. Irreligious and minorities (less so hispanics) are very democratic. The only big group not firmly in one camp is Catholics. The more religious ones are certainly more GOP leaning, but shitting on the Pope is a great way to get them to stay home.

2) this topic (Admin v. Vatican) got basically market tested last week when the journos said the administration got in a fight with the Vatican. Both sides came out and said the reporting was bad/incorrect/fiction or whatever. But before any corrections got made, it was obviously not reflecting well on the Administration.

A normal person would say "wow good reminder not to fuck with the Vatican. But no harm no foul." Donald decides to sleep on it (or not sleep) a few days, and go bananas with a stream of consciousness shitting on the Pope for the sin of preaching very basic Christianity.

Trump has a way of taking critiques of various things that happened in the past and turning them into personal goals.

Cleanest example is the critique of the Iraq Wars ad blood for oil. That was meant as a bad thing, and Republicans at the time vociferously denied that either Iraq war was about that. Trump apparently heard the slogan and thought it sounded like a good trade, and now talks constantly about using war as a way to control oil.

but it seems like it's playing out in other contexts too. The crusades are generally seen as a time where the church lost its way and prioritized the material over its heavenly mission etc etc...so now Trump is appropriating crusader imagery and criticizing the pope for being too peaceful.

Similar vibes with his tweet about the military looking forward to its next conquest.

Also this Pope of all popes. People can’t compartmentalize it as him just being some foreigner from Argentina. This is the first and I’m sure only American pope any of us will ever see. He’s more similar to an average American than Donald Trump by far.

In my ranting I had completely skipped over this! Just so fucking dumb.
