What a shit show. Absolutely no plan at all for this. And we the people are going to suffer tremendously because of it
It certainly appears that way. There is a small part of me that thinks that this could've been part of the plan all along. If the original announcement was everyone is getting hit with a tariff of 10% there probably would've been a lot of outrage. Instead, they submit a crazy, nonsensical tariff percentages that were much higher. Those get paused for 90 days with the 10% across the board tariff remaining intact and now there is dancing in the streets.

Just checking..is Irish#1 ok with the market "speculating" on all of this and shooting up with Trump's announcement?

It doesn't make any sense at all. A total lack of planning and it's painfully obvious. I don't get what a 90 day pause accomplishes either. How can any country in good faith trust us as trade partners when we're constantly moving the goal posts.

This is where I'm leaning. I'm not disagreeing that tariffs are bad, but this has been Trumps MO since he started his second term. Announce and shock, get a reaction, then implement something less severe that people are willing to accept which is what he probably targeted in the first place.

I don't see how it can be anything other than this. Maybe I'm just young and dumb but I don't see how this approach is good for us as a country in the long run.

Trump has been obsessed with tariffs for four decades. He doesn't understand basic concepts like "trade deficits". His own advisors can't even explain in real time what is happening. There is no plan and never was. Trump wanted to try his tariffs idea and refused to listen to anyone and everyone.

Him knuckling under now is the equivalent of his family and aides forcing him into that Rose Garden video he did on Jan. 6th. His advisors finally got through to him, especially once it was clear China had the ability to tank the US $ and was negotiating deals with Japan.

Even 10% blanket tariffs are idiotic and have downstream negative effects for middle class Americans.

It's concerning how "transactional" Trump is. Trump basically believes that any fallout from bullying, leveraging, stoking fear (or any other means) is transient.

I'm glad that Trump is getting other NATO members to finally step up with additional funding, but it came at a cost of hurting our relationship with our allies.

I'll be glad if Trump comes out of this trade thing with concessions from trading countries that significantly benefit the United States. Does it come at a cost of harming the trading relationship to the point where other countries choose to pursue more trade with China.

On the one hand I'd like to believe some of these things could've been accomplished through diplomacy, on the other, I'm wondering if it took "shock and awe" types of things to get people to move.

I think he's accomplishing the wet dream a lot of isolationists have.

So are we not doing the "tariffs will replace tax revenue.... remember 1913" line of thinking anymore?

Keeping tariffs on China? Pausing on everyone else? Is that correct, guys?

Sorry, at work and can only read headlines.
