This tweet which is basically pointing out the faulty logic behind the "Tariffs Charged to the US" column also (probably) explains the reason why Russia isn't on the list. It seems like it's simply a list of countries that we have a trade deficit with.

The methodology for the first column isn't even representative of the tariff rates for some of these countries. It most likely overstates the tariff percentage so that we can take that number and divide it by 2 and now our reciprocal tariff suddenly seems reasonable. So this seems more about eliminating trade deficits as opposed to matching tariff rates.

I'm assuming we don't have a trade deficit with Russia and thus they aren't on the list.

We don't have a deficit with Australia and they're on the list, so I don't think so.

Trade deficit determines the calculation. Minimum is 10% for every country.

Which brings us back to Russia. It would seem that they should be getting the 10%. The only logical explanation is that they were kept off the list right now because of sanctions. We're not supposed to be buying anything anyhow.

The other option is the Trump is Putin's puppet.

We have sanctions against Iran and they're on the list.

Guess option B is the only choice.

Everyone’s favorite governor is requiring employees to come back into the office for part of work week. Lol

I can understand a reasonable argument that we should make sure that the tariffs that other countries charge us should be similar to what we charge them.

I can understand raising tariffs on certain industries in which you want to protect within your own country whether it be for national security or some other reason. Making sure we have a robust manufacturing sector (especially in areas that are crucial in war times) is important.

What makes ZERO sense is coming up with this insane reciprocal tariff rates that don't even have any correlation to tariff rates that other countries are charging us. Charging Israel a tariff because we have a trade deficit, even though they've dropped all tariffs against us, is stupid as shit.

One thing is painfully clear, the new tariffs have NOTHING to do with fairness of the tariff fee structures. It is 100% about lowering the trade deficit. I'm all for lowering the trade deficit, but this is literally insane.
