Check this out:

At a public event in Iowa, Vivek was interrupted by a woman shouting about abortion rights. Rather than kicking her out, Vivek - who is self-described "unapologetically pro-life" but who also believes that abortion decisions are decided at the state level - invites her up front to finish saying what she wanted to say. Vivek then thanked her for her input and asked those in attendance to applaud her for sharing her story.

Absolute master class in how a representative should act.

This doesn’t seem like something a party in favor of small government would support.

Why or why not?
I've been told that the government should not be involved in things like protecting investors from a company's bad marketing decisions. Buyer beware, so to speak.

Are actions/threats like these in line with principles of capitalism?

Proudly touting kneecapping ESG is like, the most brain dead policy position. You would think a state that's going underwater and insurance companies are fleeing because of it would take....maybe the opposite position. Truly the dumbest possible people could support him.

Companies have legal duties to shareholders. They get a ton of leeway when it comes to business judgments, so a bad marketing decision wouldn't trigger anything I dont think.

I presume its largely just posturing anyway.

How would ESG stuff impact a state "going underwater"?

Environmental? Water from the ocean? I don't understand how any Floridian GOP'er looks at DeSantis as a serious person. Your insurance policy premiums are going up from climate change, and instead of doing anything about it he's out there talking about kneecapping ESG. Just the most brainless stuff.

If DeSantis was going to run on changing ESG, he would have a winning strategy to push EG. "I don't think it's the governments place to have a say in a company's ESG, but we need to support strong companies with good corporate governance and taking care of their community" - That is all he has to say, and he's so fucking braindead he's championing kneecapping ESG. It should be insulting that he is like the most prominent challenger to a guy who's been found guilty of sexual assault and has numerous indictments.

Florida in general has a good reputation on the environmental stuff. Frankly the environment stuff is considered one of RDS's strengths to moderate and independent voters.

To say you're kneecapping ESG is the dumbest shit, if you're supposed to be the "environmental" Republican why say that?

It's like Lincoln Riley saying "We're going to be the best option team in the country in 2023"

No. It's not similar. What on earth lol. You can support environmental stuff without liking/supporting ESG stuff. Lincoln Riley can't run his offense if he's the running the best option in the country.

THE E IN ESG IS ENVIRONMENT. Ron DeSantis can't be the environmental option if he wants to kneecap ESG.

Lincoln Riley can't run a dynamic offense if he's against his star QB.

One can get rid of ESG while being environmental. You are presuming its all or none. It's not. Whats next...you gonna tell us gay people who don't go to pride parades or like trannies or whatever don't support gay people because they are sometimes included in an overly broad label (LGBT+)?

No, I'm presuming the guy who's supposed to be the "environmental" saying "I've kneecapped ESG" to be contradictory to his positioning as the environmental guy.

ESG is the most basic thing. Like everything for Ronald, he's made it into a culture war. It is so non-partisan up here with ESG standards that the forefront leaders are mostly conservatives.

To use your gay comparison it would be like the "gay sympathetic" candidate saying "I've worked to end pride parades in my state". A stupid unforced error by a guy who can't afford to make them since he is devoid of charisma.

No. It's not. Ron isn't an enemy of the environment. You are presupposing that by being anti-ESG hes against everything ESG seeks to accomplish. If people want a republican guy open to environmental stuff, this is that guy.

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/28/ron-desantis-florida-environment-00099085#:~:text=He's%20proposed%20billions%20of%20dollars,effects%20of%20sea%20level%20rise.

I get you don't like the guy. That's fine. He's not particularly charismatic. That's fine. You can think he's not environmental enough, and that's fine. But frankly, you live in Toronto. I doubt he's too worried about courting your vote.

Hes the clear challenger right now in a primary six months away against a two-time incumbent who is polling in the 40-50% range. Every Republican primary voter in the country knows who Donald Trump is. Millions of primary voters are not yet tuned in, debates haven't started either. Peep the summer 2007 democratic primary polling and let me know if you notice anything.

If Ron DeSantis loses the primary, it won't be because Americans are worried he isn't friendly enough to the environment. That's a strong area for him relative to the average bear. Maybe Trump is too much, maybe he has some horrible debate performances or Howard Dean moment. Maybe the ivy league nerdy jock navy vet baseball captain thing just doesn't resonate since he can be a little awkward. Maybe people like him but wanna give Trump a last (stupid) bite at the apple.

We'll know more in 7-9 months or whatever it is.

Kneecapping ESG is a top priority for any serious conservative. It’s weaponizing access to capital for compliance with preferred behaviors from people who want control and to harm conservative industries. If any Republican supported ESG on the debate stage, they would and should be laughed out of the room. Florida population isn’t hurting and he is winning big there.

Harm conservative industries? What? Insurance companies aren't "woke" for leaving Florida because of the climate change stuff. It's a bunch of pinhead actuaries that say it's too expensive. This is frog in a boiling pot stuff. Adapting to climate change is essential, especially in a place like Florida.

Republicans should support environmental policies because a lot red states are going to be leveled. Look at Texas and the dog shit grid that always seems to have issues. These things aren't going away and only going to get worse. Politicizing this by the GOP is shameful, and unfortunately for the large majority of people that buy into this they're going to get decimated by this because they think "woke" did this to them.

What is a woke industry vs conservative industry? At this pace we're going to see woke arms dealers.

I can see the point about this being a step forward for conservatives because typically that's a Dem position of spending billions on something without actually addressing the underlying reasons or fighting bills that would actually address it instead of just sinking billions into it.

You're right I don't vote in Florida, but my conservative family members do and the insurance disaster is a big thing for them. Crazy that the Dems can't find any decent candidate to stop him from widening the gap. What a group of morons (Florida dems).

Florida becoming the American Netherlands or something doesn't seem all that bad. Most of the nerds I've listened to have sad mitigation on local levels is better than virtue signaling by going green.

Americans like competence. Governors can demonstrate that better than any other government employee. Ron did that. Hell, my Florida dem uncle likes him.

The insurance thing is not something I'm familiar with. I hear California is going through something similar so is this something spreading or?

Florida's Dem Party is incredibly bad. When I lived down there they were hoping to make a comeback. I think Ron beating Gillum and Scott beating the astronaut guy broke them in the Senate.

Texas grid is having issues not unlike the Western Interconnection and Eastern Interconnection; they have a lousy market incentive to build adequate resource adequacy. Texas also has a ton of wind and solar online. The insane spend and ban policies pushed on the grid are putting reliability in question as the transition has pushed too much dispatchable generation offline for renewables.

ESG efforts have made it harder to access capital for people who want to drill for oil or sell firearms are the easy examples. It serves an agenda, not investors. Again, ESG and the attempt to drive policy through boardrooms is shameful. Every GOP governor should be pushing away from Blackrock and others as best they can.

I saw headlines on insurance lately, but it wasn't in Florida.

I saw headlines on insurance lately, but it wasn't in Florida.

The issue those states have with finding insurers is that generally there's a price cap on what insurers can charge. As the true cost of insuring something increases, fewer companies see the cost as worth the risk so they pull out.

Florida has a program that basically acts as publicly funded stip gap insurance.

California has at least stepped in and stopped people from building new stuff in wildfire zones. Florida is less apt to stop building in areas at high risk for hurricanes/flood planes. They're likely going to have to throw more money at the state program which is an issue for a few reasons

1) It implicitly subsidizes people who are taking risk. Risk taking will increase.

2) They have limited means to raise revenue. An income tax is DOA so at some point they'll be in trouble/have to make the budget work.

The issue with climate change for Florida isn't that they'll all be underwater, it's that the building code now and especially in the past doesn't factor in water level changes or increased hurricane intensity due to higher water levels. They're also very tourism dependent and that tourism clusters to beaches. Maintaining present beaches in the face of water level rise is quite expensive.

The issue with their ESG stand is it significantly restricts the funds they can sell municipal bonds to (what ESG means varies, their restrictions cast a broad net). Because they're able to float bonds to or invest in fewer firms, there's less competition for their money. Because of this municipal bonds are floated at a higher rate and people they invest pension funds with can charge higher fees.

Big time bag fumble by DeSantis

Pence at 1%, Ouch!

I've expressed my feelings about Pence showing up at my kids back to school night trying to campaign for a House seat many moons ago, but right now I think overall he might be the best option from both parties to get DC back to working together.

We need ranked choice voting so bad. It's beyond embarrassing that we're going to somehow get Biden v Trump AGAIN.

Vivek is the most impressive candidate I've seen since Ron Paul

They fill a similar lane. Inspire a few true believers, but have a fundamentally flawed view of how government works and some policies with no chance of passing through congress. Granted Vivek isn't into the fed conspiracies as far as I can tell.

He gave a plausible explanation on Megyn Kelly. Right now is about getting your name and message out...folks start paying attention the closer it gets. For him (and any non-Trump candindate) I think numbers will change as people start doing that.

Trump looks like a sad casino circuit musician version of his old self. Dude uses his old lines that don't land anymore in front of half empty venues and talks about the past. But he spent $40 million in PAC money on legal fees this year so far...and raised about $53 million.

My hunch (hope) at this point is polls are largely useless. Obama was getting nuked by Hillary at this point in 2007. Not a perfect analog but maybe as close as we'll get. If Trump is the nominee we will lose the White House and House and will deserve it.

Trump’s not filling arenas and has the namesake. Not everyone realizes what a flaming dumpster fire he’s been. The 40m on the legal fees is absurd. Glad I haven’t donated to him. Burgum and DeSantis are moving the right way and will get better with debate attention. Tim Scott might too.

How weird is it that a former VP, Pence may not be able to raise enough money to qualify?
