Arizona could be a win too... they’ll win 3-4 games ultimately this year if I had to guess. Their schedule is brutal tho

A team that loses to Fresno State by 4 scores won't win 3-4 games with that schedule IMO. I can't pinpoint a game where they'll even be competitive.

I going to assume they grow as the season continues... If they get beat up by Arizona I'll tend to agree with you more than not. Still, I'll believe UCLA football goes winless when I see it tho.

I did an interesting read on Chip Kelly at UCLA. He’s really struggling with recruiting right now and that’s not going to be good for the future of the program. I absolutely hate the narrative about how he cares more about development and long term stuff than recruiting because that’s simply not true at all. Yes, he’s an effective developer of talent and runs awesome offensive schemes, but he recruited really well at Oregon. He was on campus for 3 full recruiting cycles and had the #12, #12, and #14 classes in the country with the years before him being 30th and 34th respectively. You need talent and unfortunately, Chip Kelly really screwed up his hiring when he got to UCLA.

QB - Dana Bible (65) - worked with Kelly in San Fran and doesn’t recruit much at all
RB - DeShaun Foster (39) - holdover from last staff. 5 3*’s in his 2.5 years on staff
WR - Jimmy Dougherty (41) - holdover from last staff. Pretty solid recruiter
TE/ST - Derek Sage (39) - worked at UNH with CK
OC/OL - Justin Frye (35) - doesn’t have a prior connection, was a wanted man out of BC tho
DC Jerry Azzinaro (60) - wildly experienced coach. DL coach most of his career.
DL - Vince Oghobaase (32) - connection from 49ers. Has brought in 3 3* DL in 2 cycles so far..
LB - Don Pellum (57) - solid recruiter. Probably best one on staff unfortunately
LB - Jason Kaufusi (40) - like Frye he’s a no connection guy.
DB - Paul Rhoads (52) - experienced former HC.

DB - Demetrice Martin - was at UCLA. let go and went to Arizona.
DB - Donte Williams - at Nebraska, fired. LA guy. Elite LA recruiter and was hired by Oregon
WR - Tee Martin - ELITE recruiter, lived in LA, fired down the street. Goes to Tennessee
RB - Chad Scott - no connect to UCLA or WC but guy can recruit and was fired from UNC
RB - Tim Horton - fired from Auburn. Landed at Vandy. Heck of a recruiter
OL - Angus McClure - Eddie Vanderdoes, Jaelan Phillips, etc. He brought in the 5 stars
LB - Tommy Thigpen - Let go from Tennessee and landed at UNC
DL - Craig Kuligowsky - Bama and UM previously. Guy can coach.

Bottom line, UCLA is a top 15 recruiting class year in and year out. With that location, those academics, and that campus. UCLA should be perennially recruiting at a much higher level than they are. Losing Donte Williams, an LA native, who’d just been fired from Nebraska, should have never happened. Him and retaining Demetrice Martin would’ve made for a special recruiting tandem on defense. Also, Tee Martin has his house and family in LA. Just match what Tennessee offers and he’s probably staying. I’m guessing obviously but living in LA, not moving your family, and working for Chip Kelly has to be leaning towards staying in LA. Anyway, lots of missed opportunities by turning to his buddies for jobs. Should’ve done Brian Kelly’s new method of just hiring the best dudes.

Anyone who thought Kelley would be an instant success didn't look deep enough. Frist Kelly doesn't have the Nike machine behind him anymore. Second, UCLA has lagged way behind in facilities and athletic funding for a long time. The Wasserman Center just opened about a year and a half ago which should help, Third UCLA is a basketball school. Fourth, when you're going head to head with USC and you've always been the little brother it will continue to be a tough road for UCLA.

They looked like a different team in the second half of the season last year. Be interesting to see what happens if they pull off a good year this year.

UCLA's recruiting rankings:

2013: 7
2014: 18
2015: 12
2016: 13
2017: 20
2018: 19 (Chip hired in November 2017)
2019: 40
2020: 81 (currently)

My recollection of his Oregon recruiting was that they tended to be extremely late in handing out offers. UCLA's 2020 class only has 4 guys in it right now.

Chip never really liked recruiting and had been fairly public about it. He was always more about finding guys that “fit” his system versus recruiting the highest profile guys. And, to his credit he did really well with those guys. His recruiting finishes even in the prime years at Oregon were never as good as the success they were having should indicate. But I don’t think back then it was about being late. I feel like they were actually in pretty early on lots of the guys that they liked, the recruiting world just didn’t like them as much.
