Okay, so let me just say that I still think he's a dickhead, but Forde isn't entirely off here:

The Scourge of South Bend, And All Mankind

Of course all the accountability for Notre Dame's historic offensive collapse rests with Ty Willingham (2). The Dash deeply regrets not coming to that conclusion last week. It doesn't matter how many three-and-outs occur on the watch of the current head coach; just blame it on the last one.

The Dash has received a few hundred loving, affectionate e-mails from Fighting Irish fans insisting that they knew this horrific season was coming, thanks to the lack of recruiting by Willingham during his final two years in South Bend. Well, sure -- now that you mention it, the preseason pessimism was rampant. Just look at this August post from The Rock Report, a Domer fan blog, which averaged out season predictions from more than 3,000 Notre Dame fans and concluded the Irish would go 8-4: "For ND fans, if things were to break right, we're looking at a two loss season. If things were to break wrong, we're looking at a possible five loss season. Four losses looks likely from an ND fans(sic) point of view, but that's usually on the optimistic side." If that doesn't sound like a communal acknowledgement of a terrible season to come, what does? Though The Dash doesn't see anything in there about: "If things break wrong, we're looking at no offensive touchdowns through three weeks and a potential 0-8 start."

In keeping with September revisionist history, Notre Dame fans have unearthed evidence that Hurricane Katrina (3), high gas prices (4) and defaulted home loans (5) also are directly attributable to Willingham's tenure in South Bend, Ind.

Thing is, most of people's preseason optimism - the predictions of at least seven wins and whatnot - were exactly that: optimism. That's to say, they're the sort of predictions that come from fans who want to expect the best from their program, and OF COURSE they're going to exceed realistic expectations.

That said, it's ALSO true that we fans have been saying for years that ND was going to pay for Ty's poor recruiting with a down year or two. Did we underestimate how down the down years would be? Of course - but the idea that we didn't expect that two MAC-level recruiting classes would lead to a drop in performance is just absurd. For every post you can find on a blog or message board predicting 7-10 wins for this year, you'll find several others saying that this year (and next, to some extent) was going to be a tough year because of the lack of talent, a lack which is directly attributable to Willingham's piss-poor recruiting.

THAT said, the fact that ND's performance this year has been SO bad is clearly NOT Willingham's fault. This team has looked lost, frightened, discouraged, and downright heartless in its first three games, and a huge part of the blame for that falls squarely on ND's coaching staff. Should we be 0-3 right now, given our utter dearth of upperclass talent and the quality of opponents we've played? Probably. Should we have looked like the absolute worst team in I-A? Surely not.

Being mocked for our tendency to blame this season's awfulness on Willingham may sting a bit, but it's deserved. Unless our boys step it up come Saturday afternoon, we'll deserve whatever scorn Forde and the rest of the ESPN crew throw our way next week as well.

Because ND fans are the ONLY people that thought their team would be better than they are. You think Auburn and Michigan fans said, Yeah, we're gonna suck balls this year and lose to 1-AA opponents. Go **** yourself, Forde

First thing I thought... This happens every year to about five to ten good college programs with big fanbases... Vastly underachiving that is... yet, I have never seen a fan base get piled on like this... Va Pelt, Eric K. and others have even gotten in on the act this year, both basically saying ND fans have had this coming for a long time, now you have to sit and take it

Here's my question... Do you mid west Irish fans go around spitting on people and smacking babies in public in full Irish gear or something??? All I ever hear on national radio and TV is how horrible Irish fans are and how bad they are to deal with... I always tend to roll my eyes because my personal experience has been (and yes I am being objective here) is that Irish fans are second to only Nebraska fans when it comes to respecting other fan bases... But that's only out here... This constant need for other fans to hit low on our fan base whenever possible can't JUST be due to ND Envy/Hate whatever... then they'd just stick to bad mouthing the school...

Just something I have been thinking about for a couple weeks now...

Okay, okay-I'll stop smacking babies and kicking dogs while in full Irish regalia (although, the other week, just for kicks, I wore a yellow and blue outfit and did the same thing-yelling profanities and screaming GO BLUE!!).

Teams collapse all the time-look at Tennessee a few years ago, remember ND's "weak" schedule? I do not recall UT fans taking a beating like this....

The thing is, the ND fan base is huge and spread throughout the country. It polarizes other fans-you either like ND or you "hate" ND. Why not kick a team when their down-its empowering. That's what everyone's doing now. Solution? Wear your kevlar, take it like a man, and realize that things will change (notice I didn't say when they would change).

Yeah, but that wasn't entirely his point. The major thing he was saying was that it's disingenuous for the same fan base that predicted a 7-10 win season to say "Oh, we saw this coming because of Ty's bad recruiting". The way our team has looked on the field has been evidence of problems that go FAR beyond a lack of upperclass talent, and I'm sure Weis and the staff would tell you exactly the same thing.

Once again: 0-3 is fine, but 0-3 with no spirit shown against our archrival is not.

Question is, though: would Forde still be writing this article if we were 0-3 but had played well - like we did in the PSU game, even - and shown improvement from week to week? Probably he would. Which is why I say he's a dickhead.

Jeff Carroll actually got this point right (!!), IMO:

All of this being said, the "Fire Weis" mantra that's sure to gain steam is very premature. There are plenty in the national media who believe that when Notre Dame fired Willingham three seasons ago, it set a precedent: Three years to get this thing moving or else.

In reality, when the school dispensed with Willingham, it made a decision to stake its fortunes to whoever followed. You can fire a coach after three years once. After that, good luck finding anybody else to take on the project.

This was never going to be a Top 25-caliber team to begin with. Too much to replace. But that doesn't excuse the complete lack of progress and the across-the-board ineptitude.

...

Charlie Weis' heart has always been in the right place.

Now his mind is there, too, allegedly.

The problem is, it may already be too late to save this season.

All of the thing he recommends in that column are exactly the things the team has started to do this week. I wouldn't blame Weis's problems on "hubris", but Carroll's really not far off. (Less so than Forde, in fact.)

From The Blue-Gray Sky: September 2007

-----------------------

Also consider the following post made by Hickster on NDNation in April 2005, before the first game of the Weis era:

Here is what I see should happen if things work out the way that we anticipate, under Coach Weis' ability to recruit, develop and coach:

2005: Next year could be strong, if we are lucky enough to catch lightning in a bottle for the 2nd time (back in '64 when Ara took over in the 1st year). Unfortunately, systems seem to be more difficult to pick-up than back then.

2006: System in with good experience. Last full year of the last strong recruiting class in 2003 with players not redshirted BQ, RH, JS, on offense and VA, CN, FP on defense, plus some good experience from some 2002 redshirted players. This year's 2006 strong recruiting class get a chance to get used to the system...some skill players and only "man-child" lineman will see the field.

2007: New starting QB. No depth with OL and 6 of top 7 players from the good 2003 recruits have already used up their eligibility. This is the year for 2006 recruiting class and new QB to get allot of experience. This reminds me of 1972 when a lot of sophomores (Tom Clements and crew) got experience and get ready for 1973's NC year.

The full article outlines exactly how inept Ty's recruiting (read: golfing) was.

Eat shit, Fordeee
