Ok chiming in on the AWFUL ref job - and let me say there must be an oversight group in the NCAA to evaluate games like this because that was an awful game for that entire crew.
1 - Not preventing a fight
There should have been an ejection in that game, period. I'm not sure why both teams really seemed to want to mix it up but objectively (and hey if it were up to me I would allow fights, ala hockey) that was getting out of hand. Consistently making offsetting calls only encouraged more fighting. Just dumb.
2 - The WORST booth review....ever
First of all it was pretty clear that Grimes made the catch. That was the call on the field. Secondly they only have the same film to look at in the booth as anyone does sitting on their couch, so having watched the whole thing there was no film that indicated anything but a catch, MUCH LESS indisputable evidence that he trapped the ball. Just total bullshit, and if it wasn't piss poor officiating both ways I would think the booth refs were paid off.
3 - Trever Laws, and more mystery PFs
To call it a foul in the first place is a stretch, much less a personal. He was pushing off the guy to get up and back into the play - he almost fell over and used his hand to steady himself as he was getting up. That was another beautiful and exciting play ruined by bad officiating.
4 - Jacked up
There should have been a personal foul called when the Stanford QB got knocked out, period. I love to see violence, and I was glad they made the hit, but it's still a penalty. Not calling it only encouraged the Cardinal players to go after JC.
In reference to some other stuff:
-The call against Clausen was legit - he flipped the guy off after the guy headbutted him. That guy was trying to pick a fight and I liked that JC doesn't take shit off of some idiot like that, so oh well.
- The warning to Harbaugh seemed appropriate. He didn't do much more than most coaches do in that situation (and yes they get away with murder), and it was just a way of getting everyone to cool off.
