The scheme is good, but you MUST have experience to play it right. You can get by running, say, a cover two style with inexperienced, marginally talented players like we have, but not this style. If this staff manages to hang on for a couple years, this D will be the terror of the nation. Of course, the O will probably have fallen off again, and we'll still be painfully average.

Couldnt agree more. I'm not expecting miracles I guess. I did say we would go 9-3 or 8-4 this year but I'm tired of being an average team. Its so lame.

It seems as though this defense is in position to make a play 98% of the time, but misses too many tackles. i think the schemes are their, just have to execute better! Can't miss as many tackles as we have and expect to win every week! Speaking of this defense, anyone see Manti's sack! woohooo!! Gentelmen this defense's savior has arrived!

Did you see Mantis missed tackle that led to a TD? Whoops. The defense played better, but make no mistake. The loss of Floyd is going to hurt in bigger games. You aren't going to drive last second against USC like ND did in this game.

The defense is frustrating to watch, especially with all the missed tackles that could have stopped some of the big games. It actually seemed like Tenuta toned down the blitzs last night which I like, and decided to call them when needed and not just every play. I still do not like how our corners decide to play 7 plus yards of the WRs and basically just give them a reception, make the receiver fight to get open. I was impressed with Flemming last night though, he had some nice plays which is nice to see because he seems like he can become a difference maker.

He did better this game, with a lot less blitzing. Would love to see more of the blitzes hit home but that's on the players, not the scheme.

Well, his non-effective blitz package actually worked very well once near the end. however, a stopped clock is still better as it is right TWICE a day.

Missed tackles

Missed tackles

Stop missing tackles and you will see a much better D

I agree, this has been what has hurt us the most. Guys are getting faked out of their jocks (Blanton) this week. I think the defense caused alot more bad and rushed throws and we held up well against the rush (67 yards, can't complain about that). When you think about it after the frst drive from Purdue we held them to 14 points. I see Purdue winning a few more games and I think they are better than their record. I Think we showed blitz alot but didn't pull the trigger which made the blitzes more effective when we used them. I do think we have athletes at DB and we need to play tighter pass defense. Too many 5 yard pads. Would like to see less Toryan and more Scott Smith. I think his speed and size would help.

Defensive play calling was 100% better against Purdue. If we would have blitz like we had been doing we would have gotten torched and probably beaten. The defensive line played their best game so far.

i know what you mean. i swear that weis and ron turner are cousins. their playcalling is eerily similar.

i think your nerves each week stem from two things. first, you know every opponent is going to bring their best against ND, no letdowns despite inferiority on paper. secondly, we don't quite know what type of playcalling we're going to see from week to week and what defense will show up from week to week. i know these are the things that get me.

you can't go for it on 4th and 10, near midfield with a backup QB. Weis HAS GOT TO REALIZE THAT!! That made the game closer than it should've been, but they pulled it out nevertheless. They are going to give me a freakin' heart attack.

Our defense needs to take notes from our O line, that got back to the basics and are greatly improved for it. The blitz packages are great but our D needs to sharpen up on the basics...wrapping up, no arm tackles, NO retarted penalties.

well, i've had a stressful weekend with my irish and the bears really playing close game when they have no business doing so.

I hear you brother..I'm currently deployed to Bahrain and had to catch the Bears and Irish updates/live play-by-play via my blackberry in the middle of the night over here. So the stress of the close games and wanting to see what was happening made sleeping nearly impossible. I pray for blow-outs so I can sleep.

I don't like comparing but, I live down here in TN and was listening to a radio show about how Nick Saban recruits defensive players. He said that he will not look at how fast, quick, big, smart or strong they are, only if they can tackle and wrap up a player. And, that is at any defensive position. This is why reporters and other coaches say he has always had some of the best defenses in College Football.

I can' stand to see the Irish miss tackles as they have this year. It is really frustrating.

While I'm not a huge fan of every scheme he does, I do love putting pressure on the QB. However, when you have slow LB's blitzing and not even sniffing the QB, then it's not good. Te'o blitzing is a whole lot different than the Smiths blitzing, especially T. Smith...
