South Bend Tribune: Stewart returning to ND

In the end, there was a change of heart for Chris Stewart, not a change in address.

The Notre Dame sophomore left the Irish football team Thursday, with the intention of transferring, a sentiment his parents, George and Lusia, had hoped to reverse over the weekend.

On Sunday night, after a weekend of soul-searching back home in Spring, Texas, the 6-foot-5, 339-pound offensive guard phoned the Irish coaching staff to let them know he would be rejoining the team. Stewart was to fly back to South Bend today and was expected to be back on the practice field Tuesday.

Great news - He seems to be a bit of an oddball (judging from stories and the goofy harp pic), and I'm glad to have the Big Stew back. Also glad he is smart enough to trust his parents on this.

Now if he will only get serious about improving his play on the field and set being a starter as his goal. My impression from what I've read on this board and others is that he seems to be very lackadaisical about practice and improving....hope I'm wrong.

I wouldn't think that's correct - he weighs in at 340 (approx) and according to the coaching staff he was up around 'one cheeseburger shy of 400'. If he honestly dropped around 50 lbs, that seems like considerable work to me. As for practice I dunno but he has been willing to shift a lot so seems to be a team player anyway.

Thatta Boy Stewie!!!!! I really think this guy is going to be a beast for us, he just needs to find his happy place.

I think you may be right. He's #2 on the depth chart right now with Wenger injured, so he may have a chance soon.

Btw, welcome to the board!

Thanks JohnND, I've been watching posts for over a year and finally decided to join the conversation. I was so excited about this year for ND and then became bummed like the rest, however, I really do feel that after this year we will be looking good.

I just moved to Denver from Detroit because of a job, and I have no one out here. I can really understand how Stewart feels and it is difficult, it really is at times especially if you don't have anyone else to lean on. But I think his parents really put it into perspective for him and I really do think that the rest of the team will embrace him with open arms, but yes...he probably will be running laps for a couple weeks.

I will lead the cheers in welcoming him back..if he plays to his potential against UCLA. And even if he doesn't, I still welcome him back!

I am as excited about his return as I was when we first received his committment, this guy will become a beast on the O-Line. Maybe not this weekend, but if we let him develop and get used to his body I can see him as another Joe Thomas type player.

i for one was really bummed out when i heard about this story. now i feel better.
on another note on chris stewart's character i think he's a good guy. changing positions for the team, losing alot of weight. its hard for a kid to keep motivated when he thinks he's done enough to get a shot. i wish for chris to have a little more patience and more hard work then you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. thank you to his parents to give him the shoulder to lean on for advice. good luck to chris and his future at ND.

It's really great to see that Chris has such a good support network with his family.

I don't care if he ever plays a down for ND...I am just glad to have him on the team.

Let's face it, throughout life we are all faced with challenges and self-doubt. Chris faced his and with the help of his family made a good choice for himself, his team, and most importantly his future.

This is excellent news for everyone.

It's pretty obvious that with his size and athletic ability (he can do the splits) that if he works on getting his pads low and drives people, he will be a crushing run blocker. Pass-blocking will probably always be a weakness for him, but I can live with that so long as on 4th and 1 Robert Hughes can run behind his big bubble butt moving the pile.

This is very good news, even though I am of the opinion he probably won't ever play a down for ND. Too many decommits to fast would start to make things look even worse then they do. We just need to sail a steady course and stay on track for our massive resurgence next year. A few wins would be nice also :).

Thats a little bit of a rush to judgement. The guy is basically the equivalent of a red shirt freshman who has switched positions multiple times. He is huge and from what I have heard very athletic. He could become very good with time to develop at his size.

KJones has heard otherwise about Stewart's athleticism, which is why he said what he said. There was a discussion of this a while back - suffice it to say that there are conflicting reports.

I kept a close eye on the guy when he was in the game on Saturday and he looked pretty good. A couple of times he drove his guy off the ball five yards downfield. He was upbeat and helping everyone off the ground. Glad he decided to stay.

he should not be playing Tackle, though. He is a Guard, he is way too slow to play on the edges, other than that I agree that he looked pretty good.
