Can't even begin to touch the topics President Barrack Obama talked about tonight. What Is the all around opinion. I'm all for middle class. We all need that come up!

I think President Obama is a good speaker. I like the idea of Community College being free/subsidized somehow. I like the idea of paid sick days and greater access to childcare. I like clean energy and reduction of carbon emissions. I like the idea of reducing our military deployments.

What else am I missing?

So will Community College turn into furthered High School? It already has really. If that helps to make knowledge available to kids who are unable. good.

If it's another political trap..

I laughed, I cried, I pooped in the middle.

Nothing will get done. It's amazing how all these taxes on the wealthy and financial breaks for the middle class became important to the democrats now that there is a Republican Congress. It's all shameless politicking.

It was a great speech, but he might as well have talked about how he was fast tracking a bill to make it rain gumdrops.

I think the free/discounted community college concept is a lot bigger than many people believe.

Additionally, I really like that he mentioned the specialty training that community college can provide (nursing and robotics). It seemed to be his way of differentiating community college associate degrees. For instance, in today's job market, an associates in business does not hold the same weight that a 2 year nursing program does. I believe that this was his way of conveying that to the public.

It Almost doesn't matter at this point. This was virtually his last SOTU since his next will be when the campaigning is going to be in full swing. Only about 2 or 3 things he touched on will even get past since the republicans have congress. He is a great speaker and a lot of it sounds good but little will get done. If by the next midterms the republicans hold serve and keep a hold on congress, voting democrat will most likely just prolong gridlock which won't be a good thing. Now if democrats swing the vote different story but I don't see that happening next.

Liked his line about climate change---throwing one of the many idiotic retorts that climate change skeptics parade back in their face. It was something along the lines of "I'm not a scientist...but I know many good ones at NASA, NOAH and our major universities--all of whom are in agreement that our actions are having detrimental effects on Earth's climate."

Also liked his retort when there was some cheering that he won't be running another campaign:

I work in social services and the majority of people I have helped with community college paperwork and all of that have recieved refunds after grants and other things (not loans) are added to the mix. I dont really see this as a big deal really.

I know there are nursing programs and maybe other programs are offered at higher costs than some other programs. With grants and and other things those programs are at the very least discounted.

I guess I am confused on how this is different than the current system.......

well the fact that you were working with people involved with social services immediately limits your experience with community college students as a whole.

many community college students are still considered dependents. however, their parent(s) may not make enough money to comfortably cover tuition, books, etc.

the plan, as i understand it, is to open the door at community colleges to those who have succeeded thus far in their academic career, but do not have the resources to further their education. two years at a community college can nearly doubly their potential salary, and provide job prospects that simply were not previously available.

Hilarious that he states that community college can be "free"...pretty sure somebody has to pay for it.

There are still people who blindly call Obama a "marxist" but have no idea what a Marxist actually is.

Amazing.

(And, fwiw, I am not a staunch Obama supporter.)

How is it not serious? The plan will supposedly cost $60 billion over the next 10 years. Where's that going to come from?

nobody believes it to be an entirely free education. that is unrealistic. rather, view it in the same vein as high school being free for students

taxes will cover the costs. graduating community college students will then be able to pay a higher percentage back than they would typically be able to after they are able to hold a job with greater income due to their associate degree

Community college graduates would pay back the government...not the people whose taxes paid for their education.

Just another spin on the redistribution/big government bullshit that Obama loves.

I'd rather see my tax money invested in our youth, in science (e.g. NASA) and rebuilding America's infrastructure than in the absolute disgusting amounts we currently spend in our defense budget.

^this is sarcasm i am assuming?

And if so, I don't see why would carry this conversation on any further. Your mind is clearly more than made up.

But before I go, I will say that we certainly don't share the same idea of big government. Multi-billion dollar corporations in bed with "our" politicians is my perception of big government.

Ya know? Like how the rich get richer and we keep the poor down and out... it's fucking sad

At what point do you think we should be concerned about the concentration of wealth in the top 1% or even .01%? When they own 99% of the country's wealth?

Robert Reich: Income inequality the defining issue for U.S. - The Denver Post

According to Robert Reich, 95% of the economic gains since 2009 (that's be the start of Obama's presidency) have gone to the top 1%'s net worth. Sooo if all this redistribution is just the worst, why are they doing better than ever and at a better than ever rate?

I liked what he addressed, especially the upgrading infrastructure mention. But I have zero faith the republican congress will do anything to support the middle class, or any of the other things he mentioned. My bold prediction is that they do what they always do.
