There are plenty of schools that compete without "one and done" players. Inexplicable empty possessions in critical situations, lack of defensive continuity and intensity, and a general perception of ND not being tough enough are all flaws that coaching impacts.

Mike Brey has done a great job of taking ND to this point. However, you can only remain in a holding pattern for so long. I don't think he gets the axe, but for the first time, if ND misses the tourny, the seat will be warm.

Dont take this as argumentative, I am just asking for an opinion, but what other teams who wont get one and dones perform on a consistent level that you find acceptable? Just curious as to your thoughts...

Gonzaga, Georgetown, Michigan State, Illinois, Butler, Xavier, Marquette off the top of my head.

I will think about it a little more and start a new topic later. Should be the subject of a good debate.

As a KU/ND fan, I know throwing Kansas in there will surprise some guys, but the Jayhawks have never had a one and done.......although it might change w/ Xavier Henry this year.

I didn't comment on Brey's abilities, pro or con. I responded to your point that

That's not Brey's call nor his replacement's despite your specious rant. No coach at ND can get a scholarship for the one year player.

you're right about it not being his call for that type of player...all i'm saying is...his inablility to use the clock is awful....he needs to use the bench more....he needs to instill an aggressive defense...needs to teach the players to block out....needs to realize that giving peoples "PT" is not helping out the team what so ever..

hell..the ND ladies team is getting more coverage up here than the guys....thats not normal

Our basketball program is a joke right now if you ask me. Hopefully it will help now that the JACC has at least been redone a bit. However, I'm now sure that Brey will not be a consistent winner at ND. His most talented players coming in almost always get worse as they play under him (ie Chris Thomas, Torin Francis) which has to hurt his recruiting. It is definitely possible to be successful without the one and done players. Many have been mentioned above but also look at Duke. They are possibly the most famous college basketball programs ever and I think you can count the amount of one and done players they have had on one hand - I actually can't even think of one right now. Brey has to go - it cannot get worse or even if it does who cares if we lose half our games or all our games if we have to hope just to make it into the NIT.

This team would be a top 25 team if not for Scott Martin's injury. Brooks and Broghammer aren't getting minutes off the bench because they aren't ready yet, so they 7 man rotation that we are forced to use this year has not gone well. I hope Brey does not get fired because I think next years team could be pretty special.

PG: Atkins
SG: Hansbrough, Brooks
SF: Abro, Martin, Grant
PF: Nash, Scott
C: Broghammer, Cooley

Atkins will be an incoming frosh who is ranked as the 58th player overall in the country. Grant will be a frosh as well, and is ranked as the 92nd player in the country. Atkins is pretty much just a more talented Tory Jackson and is supposed to be a starter from Day 1. We all know what Hansbrough and Abro can do, and Scott Martin (missed this whole year due to knee injury) has been called the most talented player Brey has ever coached. He should start, which could potentially cause Abro to become the 6th man. Grant is too athletic not to play, and Brooks should be solid off the bench as well. Nash and Scott are both solid players and Cooley and Broghammer have looked decent this year. That gives us 10 solid players who deserve to be playing in every game, so it will be interesting to see what Brey does as he prefers an 8 man rotation. The loss of Harangody could potentially help our offense, as he probably takes more shots than he really should. The 2010-2011 team should be the most athletic one that Brey has ever coached and we will for once have 4 big men who will be solid contributors as well as Martin and Abro who are 6'8". Barring a huge run at the end of this season, we should be slotted for an easy Big East conference schedule (not like the awful one two years ago). If Brey cannot have ND as a top 25 team by next year, then he should go.

I can't argue with those points.

And contrary to the Swarbrick quote about the possibility of "one and done", I don't see it happening. Admissions is not letting anyone in who professes to be a one year student. Likewise I can't see a kid who wants the NBA in 9 months spending his one season to impress the scouts while hitting the books.

The Ladies have deserved more coverage than the guys at least since Ruth Riley was a freshman.

Georgetown is the only one that I dont understand how they do it, because it is an incredible academic school. But even they dont graduate all of their players. They have had plenty of 2 years and out, Jeff Green for example, and I would bet the house on Monroe leaving this year.
