The NCAA has limits on the numbers, hours, and type of practice that takes place. You get so many practice days within a certain period of time. The athletes have to go through a mandated acclimation period working up to full contact.

ND also has to schedule around Easter Week.

Does anyone know what the media policy will be like with Coach Kelly? I'm wondering if we'll be stuck watching little more the guys stretch or if there will be more coverage than there was during the Weis era.

Thank you that makes sense about easter. plus it makes sense that they would spread the practices out so they have more time to learn the offense and defense

1 open practice to the media, 4 practices where 45 minutes will be open to the media, and the rest will be closed. Also, the players will be made available immediately after practice for interviews, I think as they leave the field (not sure), which is different from the previous ways where the players were made available at certain times in designated areas...

I wonder if the new regime will make players available at Alumni functions. When Ty was coach, he would always bring the team to the breakfast with the OC Alumni club before the SC game. A player would sit at every table and you could go around after and meet every single player. The last time they were there, I got pictures with everyone (Brady, Zibby, Shark, et al). Weis never brought the players. Total bummer. Maybe Kelly will go back to bringing the players to functions like that.

Clinic

I'm heading down with the high school coaching staff I work with for the ND coaches clinic. Needless to say I'm pretty pumped about a few things on the schedule. Number one, being able to have access for two practices is going to be pretty sweet. Also, it seems that there will be tours of all the facilities (including locker room and practice) highlighted by a coaches party on the top floor of the press box. Rumor has it they keep the stadium dark then out of the at some point during the party the lights in the stadium pop on!?
The sessions for coaches also look great. At all times they will have available an offensive and defensive person from the ND staff that you can meet. Kelly is also bringing in some big wigs from the Ohio powerhouses of high school football to speak.

The head coach of my program was an big time player for Central Michigan back in the late 80's early 90's (Last time they beat the Spartans-he kicked Percy Snows ass around the field for 4 quarters). He went on to coach at Mount Pleasant High and knows Kelly and Martin pretty well. Kelly recruited a few of his lineman and our coach got to know him when he was at Grand Valley. I'm hoping this maybe can get us a few extra perks!

Just seems like its going to be a really awesome weekend! I can't wait, is anyone else attending this?!

I was a house guest of the Getherall's the weekend of the '98 USC game. One of the game related activities was a Sunday morning Communion Breakfast organized by the OC Alumni club where the players sat at tables around the room and during breakfast the fans roamed about for pictures and autographs. I think it was held in the ballroom of one of the big hotels. Lots of people.

Davie was the coach at the time so the player involvement predates Ty and I got the impression from discussion at the function that it predated Davie. Despite the loss the night before the athletes were fine ambassadors for the University. They were friendly, courteous, and always made time for "one more picture". It was great for the fans.

I understand Weis screening the players from the media. The two jerks from the South Bend Tribune were a prime example. But I don't see that problem at an Alumni sponsored Communion Breakfast. I hope the OC Club and Kelly can restore the athlete fan contact.

It was great. The year we went was '04 and they held the breakfast the Friday before the game (day after Thanksgiving). It was one of the best memories of my sports life and it was great because I took my mom who is a lifelong ND fan. When my mom was a little girl, she and her mom would drive over 3 hours in to downtown LA to greet the Irish at the train station when they came to play SC. For her to be able to go to each and every player and meet them all was so special and incredible. She jokingly told Brady he was a homewrecker because my wife has such a crush on him. He blushed and laughed and said, "I'm sorry ma'am." I will never forget that day. Not sure why Weis wouldn't bring the players. As much as he wanted to please the alumni, you would think those functions go a long way to that goal.

They still have the pep rally Friday night with the band and cheerleaders and guest speakers, but the player breakfast was truly special.

Does anyone else think it's ridiculous that LSU fans got to watch their entire spring game on espn2 live while ND fans have to go on und.com to get no video but audio?

UND.com should stream it live online or espn, espn2, or espnu should have it. It'd sure as hell beat the baseball ratings.
