In a nutshell- ND is running and stopping the run better than last year. Passing and defending the pass about the same, and committing a ton more turnovers and penalties than last year.

It is crazy/depressing to think the season is a third over.

I think one reason for The Great Quarterback Freak Out is that a lot of us feel this is the best ND team that's been on the field for a long time... with one, big, huge, glaring exception that's dragging the rest of the team down.

(caveat: the team as a whole looked like crap against USF, especially in the first half.)

How about the 4th quarter vs Michigan, as the D looked like crap then.

....and informed people. You can't hang your hat on stats, but they certainly add to your understanding of what has actually happened.

But only for those who are trying to understand and not just rant.

With all due respect, Syria...........

I really wish people would stop repeating things that just aren't true, as if they were fact. The Defense didn't drag the team down, when they allowed Michigan to march down the field with :30 left in the game, and score the winning touchdown?

Gary Grey didn't drag the team down when he got beat like a redheaded drum, all night long?

The O Line didn't drag the team down when they repeatedly failed to open a hole big enough for one of our backs to pick up 1, 2, 3 yards, on 3rd and short?

There's been plenty of breakdowns, all across the board. Including at QB. But it doesn't ALL start and end with the QB.

Sure no aspects of the team have been perfect, but the consistency has been solid in all aspects of this team except holding on to the damn football.

Wow there are some sensitive people around here. I DID NOT have the quarterback debate (i didn't know there still was one) in mind when I wrote this. Just thought it was kind of interesting to see where this year's team is trending.

Actually the most telling part for me was rushing yards per carry and defensive rushing yards per carry.

I expect the turnovers and penalties to decrease as the season goes along, and the passing yards to be similar to last year.

For the record, I'm solidly in Rees's corner, but have no problem with Crist coming in if that is what it takes to win....As far as stats, they aren't the only thing, but they sure aren't biased.
