Goshen if I am correct, you were referring to this (Via DD)... they let the cat outta the bag so to speak....

Yes, that's a large part of it, but don't get too excited about anyone from '09 yet. From what I've heard none of those three guys have official offers yet, and CW didn't take them too seriously because he thinks they should go throught the recruiting process a little to make sure. I wasn't going to say anything about it at all because I didn't want to start a firestorm of speculation and rumors, but then it came up in the TDJ forum so I had a comment in there about it.

TR is a silent and from what I've been hearing he plans on verballing next weekend when he comes for the banquet. But that's been known for a little while. That wasn't exactly breaking news anymore but this guy didn't already know about it because he's not a ND fan, he just happens to have some major connections inside the ND program.

Glad to hear it from the source - as far as TR I assumed but I'm not in VC nor do I use any paysites, so that was purely putting 2 and 2 together.

I'm not worried about '09 verbals, although it is nice to hear we might have a good jump on them. What do you think of the possibility of:

a - USuCk having a large number of top-flight verbals pretty much in-hand?
b - Weis concerned about the '09 class and trying to get a big '08 class to balance that?

Why do you feel Weis would be concerned with the 09' class?

I think the magic bullet he had this year was early playing time. Next year, I don't think he has that in his favor because so many guys got quality experience this year that it will be largely a veteran team.

Goldandblue - that was in reference to what they said on the link I had posted. I have yet to see much on the '09 class, so I know little personally. However, yes, we do lose our magic bullet and have some real talent coming in without the benefit of something offsetting that like in-state-school or being in a more....enjoyable climate.

For all I know the '09 class could be '08 all over again, in which case... well I don't know. It would be great.

Good point about the magic bullet, haven't really put 2 and 2 together and thought about that. As long as we can have consitent classes I'll be happy!

Well, that doesn't suprise me too much about USC if you really think about who they have in already. They're all area kids and some are legacies, plus I think USC is going to be able to have a bigger class this next year. There's a good chance that they'll end up #1 in next year's rankings and it might end up being one of the most highly ranked classes Pete has brought in since he's been there. The part that is suprising is how many of them are already in the top 100.

For your 2nd question I really don't think Weis is concerned about next year's class. I think that he's just taking full advantage of the recruiting momentum that they currently have and all of the elite talent in this year's class. it's not like he's just settling on guys just to get bodies in, he's getting solid and very highly ranked guys.

it's really hard to get this much momentum going in recruiting even if you try to plan it out that way. For instance CW tried to do that last year with Benn. He was already commited to ND, but he just hadn't announced it yet and CW tried to get him to announce it at a certain time to keep the recruiting momentum going and Benn didn't like having someone else tell him what to do so that turned him off to ND and from what I've heard he still holds a grudge about it. It really wouldn't suprise me if Floyd was a silent and Weis had asked him to publically commit after the USC loss to help change the feeling of the program and keep the recruiting momentum going. If just about everything is going right like this year you just have to go with it and work out any numbers problems later.

WWB - There are other hypothesis floating around out there, just remember Zook is probably a LOT dirtier of a recruiter than Urbie.

Those are some good points Goshen. I'm not hoping for some mythical repeat in recruiting 'the number 1 class' just want us to get our targets, and hey Barkley would help that. I do think that the adjustment we have made in our technique of recruiting is going to keep us up towards the top of the heap in recruiting.

That can't be the only reason we didn't land Benn, is it?

It's one of the main one's. They also played the buddy system with him at Illinois by recruiting his best friend the year before who turned out to be very good actually (Vonte Davis) and another one of his best friends who was his high school QB (Nathan Bussy). Nathan only had 3 or 4 Div.1 offers and the other 2 or 3 were MAC schools. Plus Zook acted like like his big buddy and told him what ever he wanted to hear, just like he did with Tez, and finally there were some very strong rumors that several programs in the Illinois Athletic Department were giving out illegal benifits. Their football recruiting cord. Locksley (sp?) was said to be heavily involed and then most of it was going through a major booster in Chicago. I know there was a coach from Mt. Carmel that knew a lot of specifics about it and that info is in the TDJ Forum (VC). If you'll remember Tez also slipped when doing an interview on Rivals Radio this past NSD. The first question they asked was why he chose Illinois, and the first thing out of his mouth was, "It wasn't because of the money.", Locksley has also been in trouble for recruiting infractions before as well. While at Maryland he got introuble for trying to give away gifts to recruits one of which was Victor Abiamiri and that's how he finally got caught. If I remember tight it was a brand new Play Station 2.

My brother plays lacrosse with one of the AD's sons (Heisler). (For some reason this kid chose to go to The College of Wooster over Notre Dame). So if possible, I'll try to find out who the silent commit is.

Some primadonas are going to have a rude awakening if they ever have to work for a boss.

Hopefully our new magic bullet is winning a ton of games and looking like a nasty football team. One can only hope :) :) :)
