I have read a few articles and boards claiming that Anthony Barr is a silent verbal to Notre Dame. Maybe some of the older guys can explain to me what is the purpose of a silent verbal? Is it all bs or is there something to it. Why would anyone want to be a silent commit? I would love it to be true but i just do not buy it. Wouldn't word get out eventually?

There are a variety of reasons for which a recruit chooses to be a silent commit. The most common ones being that the recruit doesn't yet want to attract the hoopla that follows commitment to a certain team. You can imagine how much crap someone might get for committing to out of state Notre Dame instead of Hometown U. It also helps a recruit avoid certain coaches who specialize in poaching out there. Recruits also commonly want to wait until a certain date to announce publicly, be it at an all-star game, with a teammate, etc.

I never knew that there was any coach who would poach any recruit to a different school. By the way, you are in Angers? My friend spent a year over there when he was at ND. He loved it.

I leave for Angers in a week. I'm going to have a blast for sure, but I can't help but to be a little bit jealous of all my friends back on-campus. What year did your friend graduate ?

Well there was Greg Little who was publicly committed to Notre Dame a couple years back but in all reality was silently committed to North Carolina. On signing day, instead of Weis receiving a fax from Mr. Little as was planned, Mr. Little decided to send in his fax to the Tar Heels as he had been planning to all along.

Also, recruits may commonly silently commit to programs in order to retain their spot on the scholarship board as they begin filling up but are waiting until an all-star game, such as, the Army All-American Bowl in order to publicly announce in order to garner the most press. I can't pick out names for such recruits as by nature, we're not supposed to hear about them, but I have heard that this is a fairly common practice.

Another reason for a silent verbal is some players dont want it to be a distraction to their high school team. For instance if a team is a state title contender, maybe the recruit wants to soley focus on that, and like was said earlier, doesnt want the hoopla of an announcement to be a distraction. Winning or at least attempting to win a district/state title is a pretty big deal to some of these kids.

Is that true? Or is that your opinion? I had not heard that before and if true, that is pretty shitty, even worse than I thought.

Greg Little is a dick.

That being said, silent commits are smart. Let your school know, then make it known to the public on signing day. Therefore, you avoid some of the media attention, lost among all of the other commitments.

That being said that being said, Anthony Barr is the closest we have to a lock. The son of Tony Brooks.

This is recruiting dude, we there is no such thing as a lock, and if there was, we don't have anyone on the radar that is close to a lock because we have to win this year in order for most recruits left on the board to come to ND. Weis' job status precludes us from having any locks. Barr is not close to being a lock b/c his dad is Tony Brooks. His parents aren't even married, and besides, it bodes better for us that his mom went to St. Mary's. The whole thing with Barr, and he said this recently, is that in order for ND to have a shot at him, they have to win. IF THEY WIN, ND is in very, very good shape, and we all expect them to win. His comments about if ND wins they will definitely be in the mix have many thinking he is a silent commit. I don't know about that, but I don't consider him a lock because he is a legacy. We've lost out on legacies recently, recruits that people automatically thought would be coming to ND. Unfortunately, not all families are the Golics...

Every time someone says a commit is a "lock" i feel as if they are jinxing it. If i was near you i would have swung when you said that.
