There seems to be two different philosophies here. Teams either: (1) line up and dare you to stop their bread 'n butter; or (2) take what the opposing defense gives them. Stanford, Wisconsin, 'Bama, Oregon, etc. do (1) (and so did all those old ND teams). Some great offenses, like Baylor's, do (2). We're trying to do (2), but it seems like we don't have to athletes currently to truly threaten the entire field.

If we had the horses to do (1), I'm sure we would; doing otherwise would be idiotic. Complaints about our staff being insufficiently dedicated to the run strike me as naive. You can't simply will your team to smash mouth success.

I think that we do have the athletes to stretch the entire field. If we had Quinn or Clausen as our Senior QB, we'd be 3-0 and ranked in the Top 10 imo. Teams are going to stack the box and man cover all year. Our fate rests with Tommy.

I don't know if Kelly will ever run an offense like the #1 examples. I think he is a pass first guy and enjoys playing chess in an audible-based offense. I will be surprised if he doesn't coach in the NFL some day, because I think he enjoys that kind of game. We'll see.

As a former OL and a current OL coach, I'm going to defend the big boys up front by saying there are other factors that should be considered, namely, lack of continuity at the RB position and, everyone's favorite, play calling.

One thing I do not understand is not having the QB under center and having the RB closer to the LOS on 3rd and 1. If you only need 1 yard, it makes a lot more sense to quickly hit a hole created by your best two linemen, or wherever you see that you're dominating the most.

or not having a running back in at all in that situation. how many times did we go empty set on third and short?

That doesn't bother me one bit, what bothered me was the lack of short routes in those situations.

I agree. If we're going to pass on 3rd and 1, fine. But have a RB back there because on 3rd and 1, the defense is expecting the run. If you don't have a RB back there and Tommy Rees is your QB, they don't have to worry about the run at all, making it easier to defend the pass.

I agree with the lack of short routes, but having no legitamate running threat allows the defense to lock into defending the obvious pass. It is complicated when you try to throw a bomb when you need a yard to move the chains -- especially at the end of the game when you are trying to close the game out.

Honestly they're not losing much when they're passing and only need one yard. There is still a ton of field to cover.
