and even though we arent allowed to give opinions, im going to break the rules and give another one. i think it is possible that even a great position coach can be overshadowed by a horrendous coordinator. In other words even if mattison was as great as you say, the combination of baer/minter as d-coord could have stunted the development of abiamiri.

I have no doubt that Mattison's D-Line went overlooked due to the pourous PassD.

I also have no doubt that Abiamiri could have developed into a true stud like Tuck had he been given great coaching.

Tuck's coach for 4 years? Mattison.
Abiamiri's? 2 years Mattison, 2 years not.

I think Abiamiri's growth was most likely stunted due to Mattison leaving...which is why Abiamiri was never a force like Tuck.

Remember how opposing teams were REQUIRED to double team Tuck? That was an awesome thing. Abiamiri was only double teamed by bad teams. USC, UM, Purdue, LSU...all of those teams held him in check with one guy.

Dude, no one said you couldn't give your opinions. And no one said that anyone had to agree with them either. ;)

However, if you give an opinion, it's best to back it up with facts...

Otherwise you are just blowing smoke out of your ass.

For instance, I could say that my opinion is that the moon is made of some weird cheese. Facts might prove that wrong, but dammit, that's my opinion!!!!

In the case of coaching Abiamiri and the rest of our defense they are coached by the current staff, so are you saying that they can't get it done.

Apparently, Harris has been pushed around a lot during practice (he was under the caegory 'better get your act together or else you won't see anything resembling an NFL practice facility') His poor performance shows just how abysmal our O line was this last year, and how bright of a future it may have with our young recruits. Harris seemed solid during the early season, but that may have been opponents' keying on Young. Toward the end of the season, it seemed as if Harris was getting flagged every other play.

McKnight has had a somewhat poor showing during practice. He's dropping passes, and is having a lot of trouble getting away from defenders, which again shows the poor athleticism we have had the past few years. I, like everyone, was disappointed in McKnight this past year. He drops a lot of easy passes, but he comes up with a spectacular catch every once in a while. Depending on the actually game, I see McKnight being drafted in the 5th or 6th rounds.

Abiamiri is apparently impressive, according to ESPN. At the weigh-in he was 270 lbs, and didn't have an ounce of body fat on him. He was also dominant in the practice sessions, which makes me wonder where he was all of his career. I agree with LMI, Abiamiri is a great kid and I wish him the best, but he is not my opinion of a 1st round pick in the draft. He is a good DE, but he was not dominant during games. I rarely saw a sack that left me impressed, and he always seemed to be too slow to bring the QB down. He may have been double-teames, but he could never get out of the double teams of the weaker teamsm and he wasn't disruptive against the better teams. Again, I love Abi, but I don't think he is/was a dominant DE in college.

it's hard to dominate while being double teamed every play. and to have a scheme that offers no support from the linebacking core. he did just fine for us.

Abiamiri was NOT double teamed on most plays. he was beaten, but not double teamed.

Don't believe me, drop by MSNBC and watch for yourself...I did. I was shocked at how badly he got beat.

McKnight caught a couple of balls, Harris played some, North D wasn't on the field that much. Nobody really wowed anyone I don't think.

Not that good of a game really. I missed most, because the ND-Nova basketball game was on at the same time, and that was a good game. So you might want to watch it, I might have missed something.

Same here. The NFL Network is replaying it at 10pm EST though, so I'm probably going to watch most of it then.

Apparently Rhema interviewed with John Gruden and the Buccs this week.

Here's what a Buccs fan site had to say about him:

On the offensive side of the ball, Notre Dame wide receiver Rhema McKnight turned a lot of heads during Thursday morning’s practice. McKnight (6-1, 212) made some spectacular catches, but some scouts are concerned with McKnight’s inconsistent play. As one scout put it, “The concern you have with [McKnight] is one play he wows you and the next play you’re saying, ‘What the hell was that?’”

no, i dont care to think it over, i dont think mattison is a very good coach either. he made a name for himself this year b/c of charlie strong.

I'll take it a step further. Mattison & Strong are average coaches. They walked into a virtual gold mine of talent that was hauled in my Zook. Give ND's defensive personnel to Mattison &/or Strong & I'm confident that you'd see no improvement. Mattison has made it a career of riding the coatails of his predecessor, especially at Michigan & Florida.

haha. can you imagine if rhema actually ended up with the Bucs? Mo Sto and Rhema would be united again. I'm sure both of them would love it minus the fact that they would have to compete for playing time against each other. but that would be something else.

I know exactly what this guy is talking about

This sound familiar???

"52 yard bomb to McKnight"
"He catches it...OH WHAT A CATCH"

"Slant pass to McKnight!"
"He drops it..."

What it seems to be with him is that he misses the short passes...it's almost like clockwork

He seems to have problems with looking downfield before catching the ball on short routes. Without game-breaking speed or size, he needs to make sure he catches everything!

Which is weird though because I don't remember him dropping much his first few years here. It seems like it was mainly just this year. I know there were a few earlier, but he seemed very reliable back then.

But I really think that kind of thing is fixable.

what you need to realize is that most of our starting WR's are going to have 15 TD seasons under CW. this is now a passing offense.

I seriously hope not, what we need is 3-4 WR's with 8 or so TD's that and I don't know how much of a "passing" team we will be next year

It would be nice to "expect" 15 td seasons from each starting receiver, but I wouldn't count on it. We have to see how the new QBs are!
