It's disappointing after hearing over and over how bad SDSU would be. Now that ND won, it doesn't seem so bad. We just aren't dominating either line of scrimmage, and haven't for quite some time.

They say a team makes it's biggest improvement between games 1 and 2. I hope we see that. Did ND fall into the trap of looking past a team who lost to a 1aa school and has a lot of injuries? We'll see.

The turn-overs are unacceptable, and I agree those 2 INTs were Kamara's fault. One in the chest and one where he didn't even look for the ball -- he became the defender on that one and just threw his hands up. Hughes' fumble wasn't a fumble and that changed momentum at that point.

Mo Crum was a little disappointing. Didn't do well in pass coverage and had some penalties that gave SDSU first downs.

Sergio Brown and Kyle McCarthy looked good. Our secondary is pretty awesome.

The d-line doesn't get a good push, but they are great at getting their hands up to disrupt the passing game.

Where is James Aldridge?

Floyd and Tate are going to be our best options at WR.

I'm concerned that this team doesn't believe in itself. They are just waiting for something bad to happen, almost like they believe its inevitable. The good sign, though, is that they did get excited once momentum swung our way. When they get to the point where they truly believe they are going to win even when things are going bad, they will be much better off.

A VERY dismal performance all around but we were lucky to eek out a win. More poor play calling and NO rythem to the offense.

O-Line- was not any better than last year considering our opponent and the amount of starters they were missing on Defense.

QB- Jimmy still eye locks the receiver and seems to lack the vision the greats have had. A little more zip on the ball at least.

RB- Hughs to slow and Allen no vision

WR- I hope FLoyd and Tate mature fast because we sure could use someone who can catch.

Def- Hard to tell with the caliber of talent we faced today but they passed almost at will today. Hate to see what a Sanchez will do to us.

Special Teams- Charlie's new baby....does everything he touch get worse?

Bright spots- 1. We won
2. Anello
3. The weather was nice

Glad they pulled this out as there was a lynch mob forming in section 2.

okay...

cant say floyd will be a great wr just yet. it was a good throw. the db tripped up. yeah he did do a good job on adjusting but 1 catch for a td doesnt make u a superstar.

blitzing so often actually hurt us due to all the rb would do is swing pass and the te would 5-10yrd curl and float to find the hole. same with wr. we need to cover the flats if we plan to beat mich. brian and mo applied pressure every now and then but much less than expected. harrison smith, to me, was a no show. didnt think theyd blitz him a lot thought theyd keep him in coverage and use his speed in the advantage of a lb wr matchup.

duval was sleepin when jimmy threw the first slant for a td. the 2nd int imo was miscommunication. i belive that duval was meant for a decoy(notice he came off the sidelines for this play) for the endzone jump ball and jimmy read 1-1 man coverage, small cb,6'5 wr why not toss it? i think duval didnt think hed get it after having ankle troubles.

we have poor run blocking. we run too many draws and stretch plays. no one will fall for the draw without respecting the pass. the draw was only somewhat effective when brady was there and people respected that offense. the stretch is just a tough run blocking scheme. u have to hit holes fast to succeed at that.

i hate john ryan. he had 1 good play. he cant tackle. he sucks at run defense.hes a big bodied bitch. not much force on dline. kuntz looked unnatural on the outside. saw ethan johnson come in and got man handled. justin brown was the same unsuccessful jbrown.

secondary wasnt too bad. hey played soft and tight coverage all game. kyle mccarthy..well yall saw him with run support but where was he in some of the pass plays? brutons a standup guy didnt do bad. sergio was the most successful blitzer of the day, also played great in coverage. raeshon and terrail played well. coulda played a little better when it came to makin a play on the ball.suprised blanton or gary didnt play much.all talk about them and didnt see them come in on 3rd and 20 in an obvious passing down.

The ND haters will say all we suck... I don't care... We are 1-0 and come kickoff next week against Michigan no one will care what the score was this week. Fix the turnover problems and we would have covered the spread of this game. Blitzing every play next week won't be an issue... Michigan will try to beat us with the run. Go Irish!

Negatives
1-D-line not getting pressure- I think a lot has to do with the line constantly stunting. Its OK to do it once in a while but the line was constantly stunting and it became predictable. It just takes to long to develop and it also made ND vulnerable to the big play.

2-John Ryan-Why he was in there instead of Neal or Richardson for so many plays is a crime.

3-To many penalties- Thankfully this is correctable and usually common in the first game.

4-Kamara's drops-Again I give him the benefit of the doubt, he was great for us last year and it was only the first game.

5-Run blocking-I expected better run blocking but they certainely weren't helped by the play calling.

Positives
1-Secondary-Bruton, McCarthy, Brown, McNeil, Lambert, ect. Great game by them.

2-Tate, Floyd, and Allen look like play makers.

3-Pass blocking looked much better.

4-Special teams.

5-ITS ONLY THE FIRST GAME!!! I see many big times teams that have struggled in the 1st as well as the 2nd game.

I was at the game and I was not impressed with the intensity level from the start. There was no nastiness what so ever. The line played fairly well though I would have liked to seen more running on the right side. Hughes showed he's the best back we have, the offense moved much better with him in the game. From what I saw Floyd and Tate have to be our top 2 WR's. On defense I was expecting a lot more aggressiveness with the blitzing. Like SoCal said you cant blitz two guys from the same direction. Also I didn't like our CB giving a 8-10 yrd cushion, most of the SDSU's completions were of the short variety. Kick-offs were much better with good coverage. I'm still nervous about Walker from long distances and I don't like Maust holding.

Weis said in the post game that all three were suppose to get carries in the first half, but because the Offense spent so little time on the filed they didn't get him in. and then in two minute drive/no huddle offenmse situations, AA and Hughes are the two backs in that package, thats why we didn't see him.

Frankly that is a suck ass excuse by CW. Any play that Hughes is capable of running, so is James. Charlie is fast loosing my confidence.

This team lacks intensity...a carryover from last year. The offense should have run the football down SD's throat but couldn't. The plays take too long to develop.

It's not all bad fellas...SDSU threw the ball like 60 times, maybe more, and I thought we defended that pretty well. Everyone loves Crum, but don't forget, he single-handedly allowed them to have like 3 straight first downs on that scoring drive, well two anyways from his stupid penalties. SDSU had a TON of long 3rd down conversions. This is good and bad...GOOD in that we stopped them well on 1st and 2nd, they only had a couple big running plays. BAD cuz pass defense sucked, or rather we can't stop a TE to save our lives! HE had 10 catches didn't he? Anyways, our blitzes were crap, you could see the SDSU O-line calling out the blitzers and covering them all very easily. Some sloppy tackling on a couple of long plays but overall I thought the D was the only reason they were still in the game.

Some overreacting maybe, cuz we left out so many points on the field due to dumb mistakes. And Jimmy's bad pass after the fumble...but still. He held it together well. I'll take the W anytime.

Ok, my 2-cents: tell me what you think..

Offense: B-, the red-zone was not very encouraging today, 1 fumble inside the 5 yard line sucks. The O-line did a good job, no sacks, Clausen had plenty of time to make throws most of the time. They blocked well, not great, but well. Vast improvement over last year.

RB's: C-, need to hold on to the biscuit near the goal-line (I know it was a rough hit...), 105 yards rushing needs to get better, would have liked to have seen Aldridge today. Decent hands out of the backfield.

WR: C, mediocre at best. They are big enough and fast enough to make better targets for Clausen, would like to have seen the Tight Ends in more plays.

Defense: A, they held their own. I felt 13 points is a great first game start vs anyone. The blitz was picked up rather well but overall I liked what I saw in our defense. They were on the field a lot in the first half and held up. The high grade is for the turn-over on the goal line or the grade would probably be around a B+ or B.

Special Teams: A, Beamer would be proud.

Coaches D+, CW better get on his horse. BTW, did we only run 4 or 5 different running plays today?????? No slants???? Very few screen plays, a couple of tricks would have been nice to get the crowd and players a little antsy, keep blitzing and we will run out of fuel against a higher profile team (SDSU did a great job!!)

Lastly, QB: A-, stayed cool under pressure, no huge mistakes, 3 TD's, no fumbles, 2 INT's (one wasn't 100% his fault), 237 yards -- not to shabby in first game.

My opinion of course.... Let me know what you think.

I agree with most of your analysis. But a missed FG, and botched FG attempt hardly warrant an A. I'd give Anello an A+. rest of special teams a B.

You got me there Junkhead. 3 points is 3 points. Anello is a bullet. His heart is as big as his Helmet. A score of B would be appropriate. Actually thinking harder about it, B- might be more in the likes because those 6 points would have made the score 27 - 13 and made the game look a little more respectable. Thanks for the input bro.

What do you mean by "not showing emotion"? Do you want guys jumping around and yelling at eachother? If so, is there anything that suggests this type of behavior leads to more victories?

I think the team looked 200% better than they did at any point last season--even though they have the clear talent advantage over SDSU.

Clausen was very impressive to me.

The team is definitely rough around the edges right now, but I saw enough to be convinced about the teams potential down the road.

Eh, usually I'm the pessimist, but a wins a win, even as ugly as this one was. It was just week one, we made stupid mistakes, turnovers and can't kick a field goal to save our lives, but if we can fix most of that up, I like our chances versus Michigan.

The biggest thing that bothered me was seeing jc on the sidelines pouting for most of the game. Every time it showed him he was sitting there looking upset and confused. He needs to be the leader of this team and some positive leadership goes a long way with the rest of the players.I think that he does not know how to handle adversity very well, I mean until the kid came to ND he had never lost a game, I think hes having a very hard time learning to handle the lack of success on the field and it shows in his attitude on the sidelines.

Tip your hat to Mike Anello. Man he is my player of the game. What a stud.

NDOM,

had we controlled the dumb mistakes i might've been right on my prediction but in the end a W to open the season. duval kamara needs a serious wakeup call. it reminds me a lot of stovall when charlie first came in. he used to drop a ton of balls and he played very passively until charlie i think gave him a ear full. kamara needs to come out of whatever shell he's in and be more aggressive. away from kamara, mo crum's pass interference penalty is something that happens from time to time but the late hit on the QB was uncalled for. i don't know what it is about upper classmen and stupid penalties(travis thomas being the KING) but this garbage has to stop. the play calling for most of the game was way too conservative, maybe a function of keeping things toned down ahead of scUM. i look for improvement there going into week 2. finally, my power went out on the sdsu drive where they fumbled on the goalline. i get really worked up during games and that was a blessing in disguise. i will tell my local power company to kill the lights every saturday if i can come back to Wins all year long. put this game behind us boys and prep for Michigan, period.

Everyone loves Crum,

uh, think again. he's a bit slow as evidenced by the pass interference penalty where he was getting out of position and just grabbed the defender and the late hit(too slow again) was simply a joke. he needs to be the leader of this defense and team and i didn't see that. i know it's the first game and i'll make another judgement when i'm in the stands for the michigan game. we can't have those kinds of drive-continuing situations, particularly from an upper classman. on the weis front, he should've been in some ass on the sidelines, particularly crum and kumara. if he's the head coach w/o playcalling duties there needs to be some asschewing when guys play with their heads in la la land.
