Here's the list of potential 5Ys: Hendrix, Massa, Welch, Heggie, Nichols, Lombard, Utupo, Moore, Wood, and Collinsworth. (omitting Nix for obvious reasons)

Of the above, Lombard is the only consistent contributor. Welch and Moore could easily play themselves into a 5Y this season (especially Moore, since we lack depth at ILB). Collinsworth and Wood could also, but they'll have to hold off some very talented underclassmen.

There's no real method behind my guess of 3 5Ys. We just always seem to end up with more than initially anticipated. At this point, Lombard looks like the only lock, but I'd be very surprised if we didn't bring back at least a couple more of those 5.

I guess 21 is 18 seniors + Tuitt + 2 unforseen events?

I agree that 3-4 of the seniors get asked back:

Seniors
1) Tommy Rees Sr. '13
2) Andrew Hendrix Sr. '14
3) Daniel Smith Sr. '13
4) T.J. Jones Sr. '13
5) Luke Massa Sr. '14
6) Alex Welch Sr. '14
7) Christian Lombard Sr. '14
8) Bruce Heggie Sr. '14

10) Louis Nix III Sr. '14
11) Kendall Moore Sr. '14

My count for 2014 is 21, maybe 22, with only Lombard as non-negotiable. I assume both Nix and Tuitt leave. Welch will have to majorly contribute to be back, but he could do that. If so, we'll be carrying FIVE high-quality TEs, which, given my recruiting hopes for 2014, seems one too many. Collinsworth, if he is the starter with Farley [or whoever could beat Farley out], would then HAVE to return as you don't dump starters [plus he would be the HSmith/ Motta "QB of the Defense"].

Those "21" slots need to have four Oline, four Dline [because of unusual harvest opportunity in that class], and four linebackers. That would leave nine scholarships for the nine remaining field positions. If our magic number is "22" instead, then Kelly could take one for each QB/ RB/ WR/ CB/ S spot, and save out one for a last-minute Vanderdoes of whatever 5* ilk. . We are loaded in some of those areas so I could see going slow on how many DBs you allow to verbal early [unless super-elite], and the same thing at RB. VERY VERY "picky" is the word next year I would say.

I, of course, have already steeled myself against the certain protestations that eight more linemen are too many, and we should skimp there and get a few more flyers.

I personally think only 2 5th years will be asked back, but in a best case scenario only 1 will be asked back.

Lombard is the "lock" for being asked back unless he has a stellar year and projects in the 1st round or something.
Nix will leave
I think Tuitt will stay honestly, I think he wants that degree, he has talked about it before.
The only other two I see being asked back are Collinsworth and Moore. Moore because ILB is not very deep, if we hit a homeroom in 2014 recruiting on the LB front, then I dont see Moore being asked back unless he has a stellar year himself. Collinsworth is an unknown as far as game talent goes, but he is in a very deep position with plenty of young studs behind him. He is asked back only if he becomes a Harrison or Slaughter caliber player.
