I think what people are forgetting when they pencil in #'s, is that 22 is already a high number for this group. I remember a couple months ago, before all the verbals, hearing #'s like 19 or 20 being tossed around with common acceptance. Weis may be striking while the iron is hot by bumping that # up to 22, but he's said for quite a while that he wants to even the classes out eventually, to about 20 per year.
Then we started to have some real recruiting success around the Blue and Gold game, which, combined with a little more clarity about where the offers are going, and some of the "luxury" additions like a signal caller, lead to #'s like 22, or 23 even being more prominent.
So, considering where we came from, 22 is not selling ourselves short. 25 was never a realistic consideration, period. I just don't want fans to look at 22 and be disappointed, thinking we should have brought in 6 LBs, or 4 WR's. You do what you can if the guys already here don't step up - which I think, Weis is already doing by going after 3 WR's, even though there was only 1 WR we would've lost, in Bragg - but at some point, you can't continue to sacrifice the future scholarships.
Think about it: a jumbo class this year would only leave the cupboard bare when its their year to graduate. Imagine how raw this team would have been had Carlson, Zbikowski, Laws, Sullivan, even Geoff Price not stuck around for a 5th year, because you can't look at a big class an rely on them to have 5th years. If you're still not convinced, revisit that thought when you see these guys play this fall, and imagine just how green that team would be. When you see Zibby run one back, or Laws be the Rock of Gibraltar on the DL, and envision him gone for some freshman recruit.... in the words of George Scott from Patton, "You'll know what to do."
