I think after today within a matter of a few weeks we are going to hear the words "Today the University of Notre Dame fired their defensive coordinator Rick Minter" I really believe this people, it needs to happen and if I can see that this needs to happen then so does Charlie and the University. I dont even know why he is even back here on the campus but he needs to go home and retire from coaching. Time to hang it up Rick. Face it...YOU SUCK!

Has he recruited any of the D players that have giving their verbal to ND. Just curious because I don't want to see any kids decommit just because Minter won't be there (haha I know). I honestly don't think that any of the kids really commited to Minter but more likely to Weis. I just don't want to see anymore blows to the recruiting class.

You can bet he's been in on every D recruit.

Maybe someone will hire him to coach, based off his success at Cincinnati.

I was shocked when he was brought back to the defense. He was not good the first go around

That's exactly how I feel. What the hell is he doing back at Notre Dame? What did he do with Lou Holtz? All that defensive talent we had back then and the defense still was poor at best. How many 1st round picks did we have from 91-94? quite a few and between those years Rick Minter was defensive coordinator and with all that talent we still averaged around 82nd in total defense? whats that tell you?

It's been mentioned on here by others before, but I seem to recall that Weis's original choice for Defensive Coordinator had to back out due to health problems. Minter was then brought on-board as a last minute replacement since he has head-coaching experience and has been at Notre Dame in the past, both of which Charlie Weis saw as plusses. Many of his assistants have been head coaches in their own right at other schools, and Charlie wanted to surround himself with people who would be willing and able to question the way he was running the team.

But that's important and interesting to note: Rick Minter was NOT Charlie Weis's first choice.

Not true, sorry.

The OC backed out (Cutcliffe). Minter was his first choice for DC. Minter was ND's DC for a while...and one of the most successful HC's at Cincy. He took them to a bunch of bowls when they had only been to something like 1 or 2 before.

Cutcliffe was QB coach

Cutcliffe was hired to be the Assistant Head Coach for Offense and the QB Coach. Basically, he was going to run the offensive side of the house (practices, etc), so Weis could focus on play calling.

You may be partly right. They are correct that Cutcliffe had to resign as QB Coach due to a heart attack offseason. (That put in a crimp in Weis time management as he had expected Cut to tutor Quinn allowing CW to focus on overseeing all aspects of the team. Cutcliffe was expected to return but had complications so ND asked the NCAA for a waiver to allow Ron Powlus to be a temporary onfield coach until a replacement QB Coach was hired. Weis ended up spending a lot more time with Quinn than was originally planned.)

BUT (here's the part where you're right, Vince) if I recall correctly CW originally wanted Al Golden who was the DC at UVA. Golden was reported to have said, "Yes!" but then decided to stay at UVA reportedly after a substantial counteroffer was made. In addition to being DC, Golden was also a highly regarded recruiter. Twelve months later Golden left UVA to become Head Coach at Temple.

I believe CW then approached Minter who had become the DC for Lou Holtz at SCAR in'04 after he was terminated by Cincinnati as Head Coach. Holtz subsequently retired and Spurrier had just become HC retaining Minter as DC when CW called.

Polian wasn't first choice at Special Teams either. Richard Bisaccia was reported on the internet but if I recall correctly there was a conflict of some sort (contractural??) and he bowed out.

I for one do not understand why no one in the media that covers ND football is calling for Minter to be fired!? Until our defense improves drastically we do not have a chance at a national championship...I do not care how could Jimmy becomes...see this year. Rick must go!!!!!!!

Actually I think Al Golden was his first choice but he accepted a HC job at Temple.

Well, this was rumor. It was a rumor just as solid as "Meyer has already signed with ND, he is just waiting to announce it to his team!!!"

The Golden thing was wishful thinking, that's all...

It may just be internet chatter but I hear that Weis has once again approached Richard Bisaccia.

That would probably mean a promotion for Polian.

All I know is Charlie needs to make some drastic changes on the D side...I have no knowledge of what goes on with the coaches and recruites but I just can't see kids coming on board due to minter...they want to play for charlie...again I could be wrong but I'd almost bet the farm I'm not..(I don't have a farm so its a pretty safe bet)
